Good thing Nike makes underwear, I'm sure they'll all be needing a fresh pair soon.

arcas: o, basically, this is news because they're uber rich execs.

nah, they'll roll cameras for any potential aircraft crash that they know about in advance, especially a multiengine.

one gear is down. the other is very slightly out of the hatch (just barely see the tire) stuck? left gear is down. it's the right gear that's stuck.

That plane (I think it's the PSA that crashed in San Diego) crashed like 2 miles from my house. I was 6 years old, and was chatting to my mom when it hit. Made a huge BOOM--I'll never forget it. My friend's house was blocks away, and just missed getting hit by debris.

KGW's aviation expert just said the situation "is not the best of scenarios." Speculating they may retract all landing gear and land on the belly. Either way, scary.

Who's got a link to live video?

probably been pointed out before... but:

"At take-off, it was carrying 25,000 gallons of fuel, but it's not clear how much it's currently carrying."

I once worked as a refueler at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Intl Airport... We put 38,000 gallons of fuel into a boeing 747-400 going to Narita, Japan. I *HIGHLY* doubt that a gulfstream V, a much smaller plane would take that much fuel.

I bet it's carrying 25000 pounds of fuel....makes a hell of a lot more sence for this aircraft.

redoctober65: The airport is currently spraying the runway with a layer of sweat-shop workers for the plane to land on...

dc-kid: redoctober65
I love it when you kids start talking that trash, yet you know absoultley shiat on the topic.

nope...redoctober65 is pretty much on the money there.

DRINKING GAME!!!

Take a drink everytime a news anchor says:

Touch and go
Burning fuel
locked landing gear

Come on! Everyone at work join in!

2005-11-21 01:51:58 PM
I believe the procedure is: Dump the fuel, retract the gear, and land on the belly. Every minute he stays in the air is a minute where something can go wrong (ask the late Senator Heinz of PA)

stiletto_the_wiseif they could retract the gear they wouldn't have the problem asshat

2005-11-21 01:53:43 PM
And where do you think they should Dump the fuel? Over a town, in the ocean? Maybe on the runway, that would be good.

2005-11-21 01:53:55 PM
Punishment for telling the world that they were going to quit having their brand carried at Sears... and then the rollback date hits and they don't do a damn thing.

Except send me more of their slave labor made shoes.

/annoyed
//but hopes they live through it and end up OK

2005-11-21 01:53:58 PM
Sheesh, gear malfunctions are part of the standard type rating for any plane with retractable gear. They've trained for dozens of hours on this topic.

Why do you think 46,000 people die on the roads and within the last 10 years, there were three of those years without a single commercial airline fatity in the US?

Drama Queens.

2005-11-21 01:54:03 PM
I wish the CEO of GM was on the plane and it went down. Oh well.

Deucednuisance

Umm, not to be picky or anything, but why would you want tor "retract" the landing gear?

Landings usually go better with the gear "extended", don't you think?

If the landing gear can't get down completely, it's better to retract it completely. Aircraft are designed to survive a belly-land, or at least have the passengers survive. If the gear is partially down, or one of the wheels is down, it'll make the aircraft uneven when it touches down. That could result in one of the wings or another section of the plane being ripped off by the ground. It's better to retract it completely, so the belly of the plane touches down evenly.

Godspeed to them, I hope they land safely.

2005-11-21 01:54:19 PM
it'll evaporate before it hits the ground if they drop it at altitude

2005-11-21 01:54:39 PM
haemaker

I guess it didn't land yet after all. Just keeps doing touch and go's according to reporters.

2005-11-21 01:54:46 PM
ADIDAS247 a good pilot can dump it into the big fuel tank at the airport.

NO CELEBRITIES???

Well why is this even NEWS then CNN/MSNBC/FOX!?!?

Unless it effects a large number of people, or a small number of celebrities, or possibly a an attractive white woman, IT'S NOT NEWS.

Don't they learn this stuff in Barbara Walters' school of journalism?

Not all aircraft are capable of "dumping fuel". The military planes have this cabability but I'd doubt that even the military versions of hte GV can do this.

Cause you've been to these "sweat shops" I'm sure.
Tell me, what did you think about the free meals? Or the lunch time games they play in the gym. How about the free dental? What about the fact that these "slaves" make about double the earnings of the local demographic.

Yes, Nike is the devil. I know. How terrible of them for improving the lives of others by bringing them work who would other wise do just about ANYTHING to put food in front of their kids and a roof over their heads.

Oops better read the whole article next time...

2005-11-21 01:56:27 PM
they tried to retract the gear on takeoff obviously and it got stuck, if they could retract it, the aircraft would be in Toronto right now trying to extend the gear

"If the pilot's good, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that thing in so low, oh it's a sight to see. You wouldn't expect it with a big ol' plane like a '52, but varrrooom! The jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard! "

Thanks for the link, Adidas

2005-11-21 01:57:56 PM
If it keeps doing touch and goes they're probably trying to Jar the gear loose, when I worked on air force aircraft they did that when they had a stuck gear and it occassionally worked.

2005-11-21 01:58:50 PM
Captain, how soon can you land?
I can't tell.
You can tell me. I'm a doctor.
No. I mean I'm just not sure.
Well, can't you take a guess?
Well, not for another two hours.
You can't take a guess for another two hours?

/Hopefully the pilot didn't have the fish for dinner.

I wonder where Omarion is? Is he safe? Should we pray?

Nike is confirming some big-wigs are on board, not saying how big though:

Beaverton, OR. (21 November, 2005) NIKE, Inc. today confirms reports that four Nike employees including three senior executives, as well as three crew members are aboard a Nike Gulfstream 5 corporate jet experiencing equipment difficulties this morning. The jet experienced landing gear difficulties after takeoff from Hillsboro, Oregon airport at approximately 6 a.m. today. The jet was en route to Toronto, Canada.

One day they'll design a plane that can release it's fuel tanks with a parachute.

I expect $10 in the mail when that happens and works.

Maybe Nike can get into the business of designing giant rubber ocean vessels?

2005-11-21 02:02:38 PM
Not to be a predictable bash on rich folk, but the JetBlue incident a couple months ago was more harrowing as any of us could have been on that plane. Whereas when are any of us gonna be top executives of a Fortune500 corporation?

I can just picture the families of the people on board watch the landing with great interest...thinking of how much $$$ they will inherit in the will.
