And the emphasis in the article that the Chairman was NOT on the plane???? WTF??? So no one else matters?

Stock traders are a jittery bunch. A news article like this could spark a panic selloff of Nike and other stocks from folks that think it will doom the company.

Then when nothing happens (hopefully), the company still takes a big financial hit for no reason.

When I first saw this (and the one in Atlanta last week) on CNN, I thought "My God, more hijacked airplane attacks." Then I watched for a minute, saw what was going on, and thought "My God, these news people need to get a life."

Ask any pilot...it's not even that hard to do, with any experience whatsoever.

2005-11-21 01:25:06 PM
I understand the landing gear was made in Guatemala for $1.29 but sold to Nike for $155.

Seems they are having a problem with that little pump thing...

Mob Barley: I wonder if Jordan was on that plane?

MSNBC said no sports figures or other celebreties are on board, nor is Phil Knight. There are four civilians and three crew; they are speculating that the four are Nike execs.

2005-11-21 01:25:48 PM
docjekyl I've been a pilot for nearly 30 years and I've never done it, don't want to. I guess you mean ask any pilot except flucto or the other 99% of pilots who've will never have the chance.

I lack the ghoulish anticipatory gene that anchors seem to have.

25,000 gallons of fuel is too much, I think they mean 25,000 lb of fuel.

.According to wikipedia:

Gulfstrem G5:

Maximum Fuel Weight : 35,200 lb / 15,966 kg
Maximum Takeoff Weight : 85,100 lb / 38,601 kg
Jet fuel weighs ~6 lb/gallon
25,000 gallons = 150,000 lb of fuel
25,000 lb = 5866 gallons.

2005-11-21 01:27:09 PM
If I was on that plane, there'd be a gulfstream running down my leg.

2005-11-21 01:27:15 PM
flucto

Gulf V Max takeoff weight is 90,000 lbs. Max fuel is 41,000 lbs. (About 6800 gallons) STFU, flucto.

That's because the landing gear was made in Indonesia by 13-year-old girls who are paid $1.05 a day.

BCroz - Looks like you picked the wrong week to cancel your "hooked on phonics" subscription.

"It might take as long as three hours to burn off all that fuel."

Go make some popcorn, this could take a while.

munkyv22: they got stuck

Sure, I figured that.

It's an issue of clarity in headlines.

Not Retracted = Flight Problem

Not Extended = Landing Problem

sad stuff, hope for the best.

2005-11-21 01:29:34 PM
As scary as the news is making this sound, it really should be a non-event. The landing will have a lot of sparks as the plane goes in belly first once the landing gear snaps. However, if the pilot is worth anything, he should be able to bring the plane in with no loss of life. With all of the fire-fighting equipment they will have on hand, this should be no big deal.

Flucto, I think docjekyl just meant that any reasonably competent pilot can perform an emergency landinging when the only problem is 'the gear won't come up'.

For you non-pilots, an emergency landing with full power, full controls, and plenty of fuel on-board to allow time to plan won't be fun, but it's certainly not the imminent doom local news likes to predict when things like this happen.

local news reports only 3 crew, 3 senior nike execs onboard, one other nike staffer, no sports stars.

Thanks Fark! I had heard nothing about this, now im watching it on MSNBC.

KGW in Portland had a reporter on who just spoke to someone at Nike, and that person "would not confirm" that the CEO is on board.

Also did not deny, obviously, so...

2005-11-21 01:34:16 PM
It's a good thing they don't put every car crash in the news like this.

If you could put a camera on any given location and say, "OK, there's a 60% chance of a car crash right here in fifteen minutes," you know all the networks would be on it immediately.

Already happens in CA with police chases.

2005-11-21 01:34:23 PM
xheadinthecloudsx I know some guys who've done it and they all report nearly pissing themselves. Then again, they walked away ...

Unless Portland is at 15000ft, I think they are still in the air.

Plane has been cleared for a "low flyover" at Hillsboro, a smaller airport southwest of PDX. They'll fly past the tower to get a visual inspection the landing gear.

Popcorn anyone?

Better get out the marshallows, graham crackers, and chocolate.

2005-11-21 01:36:09 PM
If the main gear is sticking down at a 45 degree angle, it is not going to be simple. If the gear collapses unevenly, he'll dig in a wing tip and spin the thing. THEN it will get ugly.

2005-11-21 01:36:21 PM
Going to do a low fly-by at Hillsboro so ground crew can get a visual inspection of the gear.

Looks like the low fly-by already happened.

2005-11-21 01:38:01 PM
flucto,
As have the few guys I know who've had emergency landings. I never had worse than a mild incidence of carb ice. Particularly with high-mount engines, I'll take a no-gear with full power and control landing over an 'OMFG the engines are on fire' landing any day.

2005-11-21 01:38:10 PM
My sister knows that pilot. She is a flight attendant and almost took this very job.
/holy shiat Im so stoked she is not on that plane!!!

2005-11-21 01:38:19 PM
On MSNBC now

2005-11-21 01:39:12 PM
Why don't they just hire some 8 year olds from Indonesia to brake the plane Fred Flintstone style?

2005-11-21 01:39:17 PM
Since this plane began circling, forty of their slave laborer children have probably died.

2005-11-21 01:42:14 PM
So, basically, this is news because they're uber rich execs. I'm sure their insurance policies will pay their respective familes handsomely if the plane ends up in a fireball on the runway.

*Tries to summon his sympathies*
*Fails*

/just don't see how this affects me one way or the other

According to Flightaware he's descending right now
