When I'm sick I like to show up early and hack over their phone receivers, spit on the doorknobs and drink from the containers of coffee cream in the break room. Actually, I do that when I'm not sick, too.

I haven't called in sick for a couple of years now, but I hate my boss and most of my co-workers because they call in sick all the time.

More likely to get loaded at work?

Right. Better to come in and cough and hack over everyone and make disgusting noises in your office then it is to stay the fark home for a day.

You don't impress anyone by coming into work sick.

I wonder if they surveyed temps ... if you know anything 'bout temping you know what I'm talkin' 'bout. Word!

But how about sick days you get from work? I work for an American company in Europe, and my colleagues in New Jersey get like 5 sick days. How does this work? If you're sick more than 5 days you have to pay for the days yourself? Over here in Holland you get 100% pay the first month you're out sick and after that every month they take off say 10% of your pay (only with a doctor's note though).

Yeah. It's a really smart idea to go into work when you have the flu. That way everyone else can be miserable and sick.

The difference between them and you is that they are smart enough to stay home when they are sick. When will people like you realize that sick time is part of a compensation package? When you are sick, STAY HOME.

must be true, when i worked in my old dept i hated it and i called in sick like 135 days out of the first 3 years i was there, and i was late everyday, sometimes by an hour

never got fired though, but then i went into IT for a few months and i never missed a day and was always working overtime, then i had to take a different position (the it thing wasnt perminent at the time), and again i started calling in sick a lot (cause i felt sick) and going late

then i went back into IT several months ago and ive yet to miss a day and i always come i nearly

what have i learned from this? im a lazy bastard unless i REALLY like my job, so no one should hire me unless its an IT position cause everything else bores me

Curious here, if you hate your job, why not get another one?

I could see why not a few years ago, but these days they are pretty much giving jobs away. Economy is good for whatever reason.

Maybe not where you are, but I'm in Japanland, and here calling in sick is frowned upon. Coming into work sick and leaving halfway through because you're dying is viewed in a much more favorable light, despite the obvious downside of exposing the entire workforce to your illness.

I'm going to work tomorrow because calling in sick again would result in a visit from the area manager. I've had six sick days this year, all in the last six weeks, all for this bronchitis, which won't go away because Japanese drugs are poo and I can't take enough time off work for it to truly get better. But such is the determination to make numbers look good on a sheet of paper somewhere that I am expected to show up, consequences be damned.

when i was living in KY i was sick all the freakin' time. but i dunno if that was b/c i hated my job, or if i was allergic to KY. probably both.

I'd call in sick today I feel like shiat but pretty much everyone else called in sick Thursday I can't risk nobody being there today & I'm the one who'd get biatched at

SpeedKillz sums it up:

You hate your job, but you must have it for yada yada reason.

I say that mindset is wrong in today's job-getting economy, get another one while they are there.

Being FARK, I'm sure it's all Bush's fault, whine-whine, but still there is an insane job market going on right now.

I'm an independent contractor and am raking it in while it lasts :)

I work for assholes.

So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.

But trust me.... You don't.

I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you dont know what you are talking about.

This is how bad info gets passed around.

If you dont know about the topic....Dont make yourself sound like you do.

Cuz some Farkers belive anything they hear.

Errr...I didn't say I came into work sick. I said I didn't call in sick. As in, I haven't been sick. Or even better, I don't pretend like I have a tummy ache to get out of work.

2005-11-18 07:09:17 AM
I just quit my crappy job because it injured my wrists. Bastards.

2005-11-18 07:11:02 AM
I don't like calling in sick unless I really am. I made a mmistake last month by coming to work with glanular fever. I had a 103 degree temperature and didn't even know until on the third day I went and bought a thermometer. After that I was off work for three weeks. I was glad to go back in after that, I was bored out of my mind lying in bed watching British daytime TV.

My company vaccinates everybody every autumn for flu and such shiat. Very wise, IMHO.

That golden moment in the morning when one of your co-workers drags in three ill children sneezing, coughing, puking all over the office.

You know it will be a wonderful 10 hours.

I say that mindset is wrong in today's job-getting economy, get another one while they are there.

I thought about that, but then I realized the only job that'd really keep me happy is some sort of crime solving vigilante that stalks the street by night and rambles about his mansion in a playboy secret identity by day. I never seem to see those advertised in the wanteds.

/Doesn't hate his job, could do with more money but trades that for the security of a growing, industry leader. Ah, well.

bmihura you don't need to troll in this thread asshat

I typically don't call in sick much. Mostly I'm convinced because I don't have kids that catch things at school and bring it home. If you are sick for farks sake stay home. I don't want your germs.

2005-11-18 07:23:05 AM
My BOSS showed up hacking and coughing for a week straight... guess what happened. Everyone in the lab was sick within the next 2 weeks. I believe she went to a meeting with the college Deans too, maybe they all got it as well. Great move there, dumb ass.

I'm not afraid of sick people at work, ever.

Every day for about 30 minutes each way, I'm jammed into a full subway car with minimal circulation with god only knows how many germs being spewed onto me by people with colds and worse. And every day at least a couple of people are really hacking up a lung, usually right down my collar.

If I don't get sick *there*, I'm not worried about picking something up from saying "hi" in passing to Bob from accounting.

2005-11-18 07:29:02 AM
Way I see it, if I'm not there, my work doesn't get done because I can't trust my coworkers to do it even if the boss tells them to. If my work doesn't get done, I get biatched out by my boss (even if the other guys didn't do it when they were supposed to; it's my job, it's my responsibility according to them). Ergo, it is better for me to come to work sick and work slowly than to call in and not get anything done at all. Then again, I work in construction as an inspector so I don't really have an office full of people to infect.

2005-11-18 07:37:11 AM
Last place I worked was at a potato chip plant (there are a few in this area so I'll leave you to guess which brand). I was literally sick and tired of this job, as it involved taking bags off a conveyor belt and throwing them into boxes and putting the boxes behind you on a flow track--and it sometimes made me dizzy. It paid well, but it was boring as anything.

They have a sign-up-to-go-home list. If they have extra people, they use that list to "downcrew," most senior person goes home first.

I was the most senior person in this one department for a while, and when I was pregnant with my son I made good use of that list because of morning sickness. The other two in the department complained about it--despite my telling them my problem. Funny thing is, they're mothers themselves and should have been at least a little bit sympathetic. I remember one begging me to let her go because she needed to get to her flower beds. (I decided to let flower beds trump morning sickness that day.)

Haven't worked outside the home in a couple of years and I sure don't miss it.

2005-11-18 07:38:41 AM
I have the kind of job where, if I'm off sick, no-one covers for me. My work mounts up, and for every day I'm off, the amount of time I will need to get caught up increases exponentially. Additionally, if you don't keep your thumb on the pulse of the business, some weasel will move in and have it off you, so lying around at home only compounds the anxiety.

I have to be puking meals my ancestors ate before throwing a "sickie" even begins to look attractive.

2005-11-18 07:46:00 AM
I cover for people all the time, being them sick or just cant show up for some reason. I rarely call in sick but sometimes i use a sick day because im too hungover to come in. I do it on purpose once a year.

/sweet revenge
//love my job.

2005-11-18 07:55:37 AM
I'm pretty proud of my work ethic. I haven't called in sick i about 4 years, I don't get into trouble, I avoid office gossip (but not entirely, I must admit) and rarely slack off. The only thing I do occasoinally is biatch when they fail to schedule proper support/assistance (which I believe is justified)

Considering what they pay me (which is... nice), I figure I owe them a pretty good effort.

/used to call in sick once a year on purpose as a 'mental health day'
//hate my job, but love the pay more.

Ok. You are aware that that Fark is a site on the world-wide web, yes? And that people from all over the world post on this world-wide web site?

Not everyone's economy is doing well, matey. They may be giving jobs away where you live, but they may not be doing so in other countries.

I know, it's amazing. There are whole countries and continents other than the one you live on. Scary thought, eh? And, furthermore, people live in those countries! And go on the internet! And post on Fark!

Are you American?

BriTish. You're right. My bad. I'll cop to that. I simply and innocently mispelled it.

However, I don't think that bmihura was boasting. At least that's not how I perceived it, but Johnny_Alien's response was pretty aggress ive and obnoxious.

Maybe bminura can enlighten us? Innocent comment taken out of context or internet boast?

Another good reason not to take sick days is if your company pays out your unused sick days at the end of the year (like my current employer). So, every year I get an extra paycheck plus, just for not using half of my available sick time; and the remainder I don't use just carries over to next year's allotment.

Sweet :-)

Take stuff from work.
It's the best way to feel better about your job.
Never buy pens or pencils or paper.
Take 'em from work.
Rubber bands, paper clips, memo pads, folders--
Take 'em from work.
It's the best way to feel better about your low pay
and appalling working conditions.
Take an ashtray--they got plenty.
Take coat hangers.
Take a, take a trash can.
Why buy a file cabinet?
Why buy a phone?
Why buy a personal computer or word processor?
Take 'em from work.
I took a whole desk from the last place I worked.
They never noticed and it looks great in my apartment.
Take an electric pencil sharperner.
Take a case of white-out; you might need it one day.
It's your duty as an oppressed worker to steal from your exploiters.
It's gonna be an outstanding day.
Take stuff from work.
And goof off on company time.
I wrote this at work.
They're paying me to write about stuff I steal from them.
Life is good.
-K.M.
