World of Warcraft seems too involved, everyone I know that plays that game usually plays for atleast 3 hours at a time.

Give me a good FPS where i can get on and blow some people up for 30 minutes then go do something else.

JakeElwood:Why is it always "13 year-olds?" Has there been some marketing research to determine that this is the most humiliating demographic to be stomped by, in a gaming sense? What's so magic about 13?

Been a while since you have been around any 13 year olds, hasn't it?

/thirteen is worse than 2 for obnoxious behavior

JakeElwood:

How do you know that pot smoking doesn't contribute to the incidence of lung cancer? I'm not saying that it does, either - causation is hard to prove.

Not all smokes are created equal. Cigarettes contain radioactive isotopes in the pesticides sprayed on crops. Plus many harmful additives. Of course, if you're worried, I use a bong which does the job of making the smoke more comfortable, but there is the perfection of a vaporizer.

Nice. PS1 had all the most creative games. Omega Boost was fun. I even wrote a K5 article on the subject of bargain-bin hunting for head-to-head PS1 games.

Speaking of which, does anyone know any good ones out now? I already play UT2004...

In my experience its the 12 yr olds who really whip my ass in Warcraft3.

Not for multiplayer. UT2k4 still owns the arena and CTF settings. For large-scale warfare there's BattleField 2, but I still prefere 2k4 ONS.

Quake4 is out but it's getting only middling reviews... short game, unremarkable CTF and DM, and that's all there is.

Personally, I'm having good fun with Serious Sam 2. The game is nothing but mindless, monstrous destruction.

Maybe you should play something less attached than government propaganda?

How do you know when a military recruiter is lying?

I'll let someone else answer that, we all should know the answer.

Fork over the $50 (unless you're talking about the $50 game they just put out which I haven't even looked at) and get one quality game to play with people without the sick overtones of our military, I support the troops, not their naivety.

/AVP2, Tribes Vengeance, HL2, Rainbow Six 3?

I stopped playing online games about 3 years ago. Well, I stopped almost all games for that matter. I was playing a space RPG and I needed to earn credits to buy a better ship. One of the guys in my guild or whatever told me it only takes about 2 hours a day (Real world time) to earn the credits you need to use for that day. 2 hours a day was no big deal to the people playing. They would do their 2 hours of money earning and then play for 6-10 more hours a day. This was all real world time. Not game time.

I decided I wanted guitar skills and social skills more than a imaginary space ship.

As someone noted, it is like being addicted to food, or exercise, which there are as many people. Next someone will tell me you can be addicted to sex...

Who says you can't? I can only imagine how much that addiction would suck, never being able to make an emotional connection with somebody *shudders*

They found that excessive game players could not be easily startled...

Wow, that might explain it. I'm nearly impossible to startle.
This kinda got me though:

Well, in the long view, there's UT2k7 which looks and sounds incredisexy. There's also QuakeWars coming out soon, which is going to be Enemy Territory set in the Quake 2 Strogg universe... I'm looking forward to that.

Otherwise, it's the usual pile of singleplayer games that have some peripheral multiplayer. None of those really do it for me personally, so I don't keep a close eye on them (except for the Sam series).

And as always, there's the glut of mods available for Half-Life 2. Not being a Counterstrike fan, I never picked it up.

If I don't get my daily Quake fix I'm just a wreck. I have Quake 4 now so I'm amazed I found 30 seconds to post on FARK.

Seems like our taste in games is quite similar.

Is there screen grabs of the new unreal floating around?

What about a new tribes game? I used to love tribes 2 but the new tribes vengeance I dont like at all

A guy who works next to me plays Warcraft about 90% of the time he is in our office (grad school). Sometimes he comes into the office early (11am for him), plays all day, and on nights when I come back from the laboratory (2am), he's still here playing Warcraft.

I don't mind it all that much. But what I really find funny is the fact that whenever I walk by his computer he clicks over to an open word document to "fool" me into thinking he's getting work done. A couple of weeks ago I was fixing a computer problem in another office and had to walk in and out of the office about 50 times within an hour, and he clicked over to word every single time! Sometimes I intentionally walk to and from his space, just to see how he reacts:

Whoops, I forgot something, *click*
Whoops, I forgot it again, *click*
Whoops, one more time, *click*
Whoops, what are you writing there? *click*
Whoops,....

Everyone in the building knows what he's doing.

I remember when Nintendo first came out, and my mom would be up until the wee hours of the morning playing, then have to go into work. Damn, was she grouchy until she beat Super Mario Bros. It was also my Christmas present. I didn't really get to play until February. That sucked.
BTW, I was thinking of getting my husband Age of Empires III for Christmas? Anybody know if it is any good?

The voice. And the trashtalking. 13-year-olds are old enough to kick ass, but not old enough to have any basic politeness. So while winning they chatspam with bad Southpark quotes. And if you've got voice chat, you get to hear some kid who's balls haven't even dropped cuss like a sailor and trashtalk everybody in the game with his shrill soprano voice.

B I N G O

They are ungracious in victory ("LOL U SUKC FAGOT") and whiny in defeat ("FUKIN AWP HORE CHEATER"). And nothing is funnier than your MAC10-toting point man's voice comms sounding like... well, a little kid.

Nothing compares to T1. I'd spend hours a day in my younger days playing till my eyes bled. Thank god my computer is incompatible with it, or else I'd still be an addict.

I wonder how many other people have done this. My latest video game addiction is Unreal Tournament 2004. It does interfere with my life so one time I deleted the game and smashed the CD so I couldn't reinstall it. Later on I bought it again. I bought it at full price at the store instead of somewhere like Ebay for much less cause I didn't want to wait for the delivery. Later on I deleted/smashed it again, only to buy it again a third time. Now I'm just playing it and saying to hell with the consequences. It isn't even that awesome while I'm playing it, it is more the urge I feel when I'm not playing it.

I used to play online age of empires all the time. Then I discovered the joys of online poker. It's sorta a big interactive video game that actually pays money if you are good. Also, I got a girlfriend and decided that sex is more fun. People who play video games are pathetic losers. Go get a girlfriend, losers.

If you miss Tribes 1 skiing combat, there's Legends:

Legends

No vehicles or anything, but Tribes 1 style jetpacks, sluggish weapons, and turrets. I could never get into it, but I can see the appeal.

WoW is my drug of choice, I've blown off work to play it. Drove past s/o yard this morning and had to catch myself from hitting the brakes. They had a dirt pile in their yard that looked just like an Un'Goro Dirt Pile. I still need one more morrowgrain dammit!

Also I was out walking the dogs last night and a car was parking in the next lot over. It made a noise that sounded EXACTLY like a Protoss Carrier launching fighters. I jumped outta my skin for a second and started scanning the sky . . .

Pxtl: Well, I don't think it's possible for even that grim show to make game addiction look as bad as drugs. Nothing compares to the meth-head episodes there, like the time they had on the guy from Days of the New who'd blown so much rockstar cash on meth that he itched all over because the stuff had crystallized under his skin.

i'm not here to start a fight, but i'm calling B.S. on the "under the skin" thing. i just did a fairly extensive Google on that and couldn't find a thing.

I feel your pain, Key_Master. I did the same thing with Starcraft a few years back. I bought the game, deleted it, cracked the disk in half (or frisbeed it a few times until it was unplayable) and then bought it again. Then destroyed it again, then bought it again. I think I've bought it three times, for a total of maybe $50, which is silly for a game like that. Luckily it's only $9.95 these days and getting cheaper, so this happy cycle can continue at bargain prices!

No, actually I moved on to HL2 and Doom 3, both of which are pretty played out at this point (thank God). I won't purchase counter-strike for my girlfriend's sake.

Just my two cents.

My college boyfriend was addicted to Everquest, as well as a few other games. He almost failed his last semester in college as a result. At one point, we were arguing about his game-playing, and I threatened to unplug his computer, and I thought he was going to hit me.

He didn't (never did at any point)but that relationship didn't last long after that. My husband (obviously a different man) doesn't play video games. If he did, I wouldn't have dated him in the first place.

2005-11-16 02:41:17 PM

Really, video games ain't my thing. Too many people I know are far worse on those than I was on the buddha.

I've done something similar with cigarettes. Buy a pack, throw it away. Didn't feel awesome while smoking - more of an urge when not smoking...

Diablo II LOD is my game of choice, and it drives my wife up the wall. However, I get around that most of the time by playing late at night after she's asleep.

I did the "break the cd" thing twice over the years myself, even gave away a 2 year old account at one point.

My 11 yr old is a WoW freak. We have to drag him away from the computer at times too.

2005-11-16 02:45:52 PM
The itching is caused by chronic electrolyte imbalances in the peripheral nerves as a result of too much pharmaceutical abuse.

Not crystallization under the skin.

If that were true, then people would be flaying junkies and smoking their hides.

Yeah, I wish that was the worst guys had to deal with. You are just to perfect aren't you? Do you know how many guys probably play video games? Regardless of that, I bet you were a rather pain to put up with. Acting like his mother, geez.

Many women are so superficial and don't even realize, they think they just have classy taste, but my favourite question to females like yourself is this. Since we can now produce diamonds inside machines, would you marry a guy who bought a diamond for $200? You just seem a little obsessed with success. Not that that is "wrong", but success is measured in many forms, it's richest is "happiness". If you thought that by stopping his computer use would instantly shoot up his test scores, that's laughable. BTW, school is a bunch of crap, turning you into a mindless zombie that doesn't ask questions. It might be important for entering into society, but maybe you should have taken your boyfriend's happiness more into account. Because when you're having trouble with your test scores, the next thing you want is your girlfriend whining about it and telling you to stop your hobbies. I wouldn't have hit you, but I would've dumped you. Try chilling. They're just games. But trying to teach others probably makes you feel better than trying to understand. You probably think you don't do the same thing watching tv. Hahaha.

2005-11-16 03:18:03 PM
amydancin, never, NEVER, say you won't date guys that play video games on an Internet message board.

FATE (a Wildtangent game developed independently) is my heroin(e) these days.

Imagine the love child of Diablo 2 and a Roguelike with full 3D graphics, and you're just about there. Don't let the cartoony main character put you off; if you have the time to kill, people have confirmed that you can travel down more than 2.5M dungeon levels.

That's right. You'll be dead by then. Or at least look like Sloth from Seven.

And it's $20. You know you wanna...

My highschool sweetheart told me she thought I loved marijuana more than her. I tried to explain to her it was an herb, she was a person, she wouldn't hear it though. I thought it was really dumb and thought about dumping her for that, I didn't though because of course I really did love her and we had a great relationship. Then I found her cheating on me through her hidden online diary that explained it all, I shared it with our common friends. Boo-yah.

2005-11-16 03:25:34 PM
Hmmm, new Star Wars Galaxies revamp happens soon. More twitch-like gameplay, sounds good. Of course my friend who has been in it forever and is quite popular and rich in virtual treasure (you wanna see a die-hard MMO player?) quit his account and refuses to play. It came as shock, I'll be renewing soon to check it out, I'll probably like it though.

Neverwinter Nights is probably my fave, with the sequal coming soon, can't wait.

I've recently replaced an alcohol habit with a World of Warcraft habit. Much cheaper, and it doesn't leave a hangover, although I'm starting to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. But my dwarf just hit 40 baby!!!
