Wow, so activities that people enjoy make them feel better when they do it, and make them want to do it.

I don't know, Clever Neologism, but I feel like ass after a few hours of gaming. It's fun as hell but then you get the point where you're really tired or hungry or impatient and you're just trying to wring as much fun as possible out of the experience but it's still hard to stop. If I've played for more than an hour or so I usually have this stressed-out feeling afterwards of having accomplished nothing. Plus I stink.

Some people are equally addicted to religion, eating (more than is necessary), television (probably worse than games), the internet, working, cleaning, gambling...

Point of fact:

Some people are weak willed and we have no duty or ability to truely help them. If they are adults they can suffer the consequences and if they are kids then their parents need to own up to THEIR responsibility.

Maybe I wouldn't play Hearts of Iron 2 for such a long time if Italy was actually competant enough to do something other than annex Ethiopia and Albania for christs sake. YUGOSLAVIA HAS ONE TENTH YOUR INDUSTRIAL CAPACITY YOU RETARDS.

//"Pact of Steel" my ass.

When in the game, I can forget about real life. I think it's like booze -- play/drink to forget about overwhelming RL stresses.

I am a 30 somethingish professional with graduate degrees, who still loves his videogames.

Unfortunately, as a 30 something year old professional, I don't have the time to play them as much as I want. As a result, in the on-line gaming world - I am cannon fodder.

Nothing kills my buzz worse than being continuously fragged by 13 year old killing machines who then mercilessly mock me.

/prefers to play with himself :-)

Smoking is physically addictive and is deadly. It forces us to pay more in healthcare because of the lack of health insurance (240,000,000 without) in this country. Completely different.

America's Army is like smack for me

I just played hours and hours and hours. I would rise early to play, then go to work, make a pot of coffee then play for a few hours. I prefered to stay in playing than go out with people. I had to delete the game.

/Had two breakdown already
//Now I stay inside playing GTA:SA
///replaced smack by crack

Yeah, got a current addiction to the Sims. I never, ever should have bought it. Last weekend I played for 10 and 9 hours, Sat & Sun. B/f is threatening to take my video card away from me.

/I can quit anytime I want to

Just don't play the newest games. 13 year olds flock to the current cutting edge title, free commercial games (like Enemy Territory) and Counterstrike.

Avoid that list and you'll avoid the kiddies. On the other hand, that leaves opensource games and slightly older games that have a solid community... which means the players have been playing it for years and will completely make you their biatch. But they'll be nice while they do it.

My current bad habit is TA:Spring - the hardest RTS ever made. I go online, start out feeling good, and by the end of the game I'm ready to eat a bullet after watching my army get so thoroughly reamed. And yet I still want to play more.

But excessive computer game players sexually active adults showed classic signs of craving when they were presented with freeze-frames from some of their favourite games hot porn - they desperately wanted to play have sex, expected to feel better once they did, and fully intended to indulge again as soon as possible.

Has anyone seen that show called intervention on A&E. They had one dealing with this. They made the guy look so addicted. They cut in voiceclips from max payne. It made him look like he thought he was crazy.

"They killed my family... They took my life..."

To be fair, he did play a lot of video games. He did a 24 hour stretch of DDR without taking a break. He just colapsed afterwards.

/crazy video game addicts.

Hallmark of drug addiction?

2005-11-16 12:44:26 PM
Why is it always "13 year-olds?" Has there been some marketing research to determine that this is the most humiliating demographic to be stomped by, in a gaming sense? What's so magic about 13?

2005-11-16 12:45:44 PM
AcornMan: I've been FPS-free since then, but I have to admit I have cravings every time I walk past Call of Duty 2 on the store shelves. That looks like a sweet game.

Oh it is a really sweet game. You should pick it up...I could bet you won't regret it!

/shame on me.

I also have to concur with the article. After 6 months of playing every night 5 hours or more, I had to quit Halo2 cold turkey. It was affecting my marriage.

Wow, used to like New Scientist but this is junk science. It's not science, it's Fark.com. Now, although you could easily do a study to prove both go well together. I would love to see the impossible task of showing that either are "bad" for you.

There are poisons in your food, water, schools brainwash you, your media is crap, it lies to you. But no, the real problems aren't jobs or the growing threat against our civil liberties, it's online gaming and people smoking harmless herbs.

Although drug addiction could mean harmful things, but an herb that has never killed anybody, is possibly helpful to the brain but certainly not harmful, or contributed to lung cancer. All I do is smoke weed, I'm not a tightass it doesn't bother me to try anything else. I will, but I won't keep doing it, just herb. I'm also very healthy and have excersized regularly for the past 6-7 years.

As for people saying watching tv is bad and etc., etc. (electronic drugs), they're neutral just like any other tool. Psychadelics and electronics can be used for good. The problem is the content, which is why I stopped watching tv and just find stuff to watch on torrents. Local news, sitcoms, etc. will eat your brain. Slowly.

The voice. And the trashtalking. 13-year-olds are old enough to kick ass, but not old enough to have any basic politeness. So while winning they chatspam with bad Southpark quotes. And if you've got voice chat, you get to hear some kid who's balls haven't even dropped cuss like a sailor and trashtalk everybody in the game with his shrill soprano voice.

2005-11-16 12:55:53 PM
Interact with one in real life. You'll find it's easy to think little kids are stupid and incompetent. Therefore, being completly reamed by one is a humiliating experience. Plus they're often times immature, and that can be frustrating as well.

Some people are weak willed and we have no duty or ability to truely help them. If they are adults they can suffer the consequences and if they are kids then their parents need to own up to THEIR responsibility.

Careful how you tread here. Unless you have direct experience of addiction, you have no idea how damaging it can be. I had to quite gaming cold turkey as it nearly killed my marriage. I also have a lot of friends that are 12-stepping and I've seen the positive change it has made in their lives. Addiction has nothing to do with willpower, it has to do with trying to fill up your life with something you think has meaning but in reality just makes you feel empty inside.

Well, I don't think it's possible for even that grim show to make game addiction look as bad as drugs. Nothing compares to the meth-head episodes there, like the time they had on the guy from Days of the New who'd blown so much rockstar cash on meth that he itched all over because the stuff had crystallized under his skin.

What is the difference if I watch TV or play a game 3 or 4 hours a night? With the TV you just sit and watch like a zombie. But in games I can kill zombies. At least there is real interaction.

How do you know that pot smoking doesn't contribute to the incidence of lung cancer? I'm not saying that it does, either - causation is hard to prove.

Gaming Addiction >> TV Addiction

I seldom watch TV anymore. The time I wasted on the boob tube I now waste slaying vile orcs and spawning more overlords.

90% of what I watch now comes from NetFlix or my DVD collection. The other 10% is news.

/and 1% Jeopardy

I've been on a PS1 binge lately, believe it or not. I think I'm just bored with my PS2/Xbox library right now. Yesterday I put in Castlevania: SOTN, Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile and Omega Boost. Good times.

No, it is willpower. It is called moderation, which takes willpower. You should become interested in a real hobby, that takes willpower but it also fills your life with something that is beneficial to your health, entertainment, and marriage. I personally suggest rock climbing or simple hiking.

I do have direct experience with addiction and what you describe is obsession. It is very different. To quit an obsession you need willpower. To quit an addiction you either need a tremendous amount of willpower, therapy, support from friends/family, treatment, or any combination.

2005-11-16 01:06:32 PM
i wonder how many things you could set the subject as for that "they desperately wanted to _______, expected to feel better once they did, and fully intended to indulge again as soon as possible. ".

It just seems as yet another outlet for new drugs and therapy, or in essence money transfer. The real addiction seems to be finding things to be addicted over and the $$.

Lets cure people of being addicted to life.

I generally played for 10 hours a day at the least, I stayed awake for three day bursts sleeping for only four hour intervals or on server down times to become one of the first level 60s for WoW, when I got bored of that and dropping raids, feeling like it was EQ at Ssra and such again, I stopped immediately. Of course I can still down days worth of time into NS or CS, even, sadly enough to my FPS heritage, Halo 2 link ups with friends almost weekly. Not addicted though since I just do not play when it is boring, I have spent days doing nothing towards games, weeks on vacation away from video games and never freaked out because of it.

As someone noted, it is like being addicted to food, or exercise, which there are as many people. Next someone will tell me you can be addicted to sex...
