13 and 18 are important numbers for REALLY BAD Latin American Gangs. 18th Street, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and their United States branches, are nasty. Google them if you want to know how many indictments have been levelled against MS-13 lately, particularly in Virginia. Also look at their response to the Minuteman program in Arizona.

The article was extremely poorly written and/or researched, because it's not just any rosary beads that are gang identifiers. It's the COLOR that matters. Spanish Cobras wear green and black, Latin Kings wear yellow, etc etc etc. There's no reason for young kids in trouble with school authority to be wearing rosary beads. There's no "coolness factor" with them except as gang identifiers. If it's a public school, there's no reason why the school shouldn't ban them.

The owl, I don't know. I wouldn't be shocked if it were a gang symbol, and I feel like I've heard about it somewhere, but I don't know, and I can't find anything. I'll pop back in when I've had a chance to look around a little.
