He says that means some single coffees contain more than half the daily amount of caffeine that is considered safe to drink without any side-effects.

I LIVE for caffeine's side-effects. Bring 'em on!

Where safe = without some utterly innocuous side effects that exposure rapidly minimises ?

Even in pregnancy there has never been a conclusive human study that shows any evidence of harm. Drip feeding espresso to pregnant rabbits doesn't seem to do them much good, but when's the last time you saw a rabbit in Starbucks ?

FarkinNortherner: when's the last time you saw a rabbit in Starbucks ?

Tuesday. About 1am. He was there with a gopher & a duck.

I may have been drunk at the time.

Yes! A 12oz cup of coffee has around 200mg.

No it isn't.

trust me.

Show me any study that demonstrates any significant ill effects in adult humans.

400-450 mg caffeine is nothing. The Ld50 for humans ingesting caffeine orally is 192 mg/kg. That means if youre 150 lbs it would take about 13 grams to kill you at least half the time.

Besides that many people build tolerance and so getting a quad vente latte is just breakfast.

I would lead the revolution myself if that happened.

"What our data led us to believe was that you really didn't know what you were going to be exposed to in terms of the caffeine content."

So their data told them that their study was futile.

They took my smokes they are trying to take my beer. If they mess with my coffee I sware to all that is holly I will hunt each one of them down and kill them with my bare hands while I snort pound after pound of coffee beans!

Some kid I went to high school with once started doing shots of espresso, then downed two quad mochas one right after the other. He exclaimed "gee, my fingernails are blue!" then passed out and was taken to the hospital with caffeine poisoning. It was pretty funny.

Soo, coffee has wide variances in caffeine content which may be more than can be safely drunk by adults without any side-effects. Gee, where is that guy who reports on obvious uninteresting subjects which have already been in the news for years, adding his own special touch??

Caffine has side effects? Thats all I drink, I don;t have any side effects except that I can't walk past a restroom!

A doctor did tell me that 200 oz of coffeee a day is bad and could elevate my heart rate.

Caffeine Poisoning and Caffeinism

Caffeine poisoning, also called caffeinism, is a condition caused by the continuous ingestion of excessive amounts of caffeine. Symptoms include restlessness, anxiety, increased urination, and the inability to sleep. General depression, rapid heartbeat, tremors, and nausea are also symptoms. Death may occur from heart and lung collapse. But don't panic just yet. The fatal dose is estimated to be 10 grams, the equivalent of 100 cups of coffee! The recommended limit of caffeine for healthy adults is <300 mg/day. An 8 ounce cup of regular brewed coffee has 100-150 mg of caffeine.

2005-11-04 12:53:42 PM
From the article:

That range of two to three cups per day is generally very safe for most people.

Now, did they mean two to three pots per day, or two to three cups per hour? 'Cos as it stands, that is a pointless statement, nobody drinks only 2 cups of coffee a day,

2005-11-04 12:54:42 PM
i went to a conference in frascati italy once. at the daily coffee breaks it was expresso or nothing. by the end of the week, i could finally choke down a whole cup.
and by cup i mean thimble.
even they knew that's its impossible to drink an actual cup's worth. nasty nasty stuff.

2005-11-04 12:55:53 PM
What a shiatty headline. It's not really about espressos, and espressos contain less caffeine than normal coffees.

it's because of the caffeine. A lot of laxatives use stimulants, caffeine is a stimulant, do the math.

Of course, the side with more caffeine would win. We could fight for four straight days with no sleep, and still have time to write 5 8-page essays.

A shot of espresso has much less caffeine than a strong cup of regular joe.

2005-11-04 01:03:56 PM
All I know is that after giving up caffeine entirely I know

Wake up easier
Fall asleep easier
Feel less groggy during the day
No afternoon shakes before eating

And just generally feel better than I did. I'm sure some of that has to do with the 20 pounds I lost when I cut my sugar intake to an eigth of what I was ingesting and also switched to hard liquor drinks instead of beer; but for me anyway it seems I am better off without.

I suggest to everyone just to try it out for a month and see how they feel at the third week.
