Absinthe is tasty stuff. I brought a bottle back from England when I went there two years ago. Unfortunately, I couldn't drink it because it contains a legal substance that should be banned: Yellow #5. That shiat gives me horrible migranes.

I gave the bottle to my brother last night and he drank the entire thing during the course of the evening. He had a nasty hangover this morning.

Hagbardr

This article implies that what you bought was only a pale mockery of real absinthe...

2005-10-30 11:46:42 AM
I had to satisfy myself with licking the spoon as not to induce a cripling migrane. It was tasty enough, but I'd love to taste some of these period recreations. Bonus: no yellow 5.

I'd give it a try.

On another note, the word for today is "absinthism." Say it outloud and fast a few times. Does weird things to your tongue.

Come to Canada if you want to try some. I never have, but only because of lack of desire to.

The anti-absinthe fervor climaxed in 1905, when Swiss farmer Jean Lanfray shot his pregnant wife and two daughters after downing two glasses. (Overlooked was what else Lanfray consumed that day: crme de menthe, cognac, seven glasses of wine, coffee with brandy, and another liter of wine.)

I know I'm always at my best when I calculate my alcohol intake by the liter.

Interesting article.

Was it unbanned or never banned in Canada?

Isn't this something Bill Gates claimed to do as well? What is it with innovators and hijacked construction equipment?

d'art: Was it unbanned or never banned in Canada?

Never banned is my understanding. The only caveat: You're looking at around $85 (About $72USD) for a 700ml (~25oz) bottle.

2005-10-30 02:26:17 PM
Hell, you can order absinthe from the internets and have it shipped. A buddy of mine has had more than three bottles FedExed to his door.

2005-10-30 02:30:15 PM
I recently bought a bottle from of the very stuff that Mr. Ted Breaux mentions in this article. Its excellent. Its definitely some superior stuff. Pricey, but worth it.

2005-10-30 02:31:44 PM
You can get Absinthe here in Canada. But, as St_Ides said, it's hella expensive and I'm pretty sure that most of the stuff on the market is utter crap.

At least, it did nothing for me when I tried it.

It was never technically banned in Canada, just not approved for sale. All alcoholic drinks need to be approved by Health Canada before they can go on sale. It was approved just last year after it was proven not to be harmful.

In Ontario a bottle of Hills is around $80, it's the only 'true' absinthe that's for sale here. There are other brands for around $30, but they're not worth drinking.

/absinthe is very yummy!

Next time you're in europe, $97 a bottle

From the rope comment I'd say he didn't rtfa and assumed the oldest banned substance was a different green intoxicant.

The stuff you can get in Canada and FeExed to the states lacks an extract of wormwood. Thus you only get drunk and don't hallucinate. But don't worry just smoke some Salivia cause it's still legal.

2005-10-30 02:44:16 PM
Did you mean: Salvia?

absinthe sucks. It's only cool to drink because it is banned.

"Pour it slowly," he says. "That's the secret to making it taste good. If the water's too warm, it will taste like donkey piss."
Wow, that's dedication - he has even sampled donkey piss so that he knows exactly what too-warm absinthe tastes like.

2005-10-30 02:48:16 PM
Great article. I never knew exactly what absynthe was until now.

What I want to know is, are there any kinds that are authentic like Breaux's, or is his the only good one?

I'd like to try some

The second time I ordered Salvia from a British online store call the Dream Shop, I had to go to the post office to sign and pick it up. The DEA is tracking that herb like crazy. The only reason they have not banned it is it's lack of addiction. 2-3 times is enough.....

Tried absinthe on my honeymoon in Barcelona. Very interesting...puts a little halo on the lights. The presentation with the sugar cube is very cool. Our waiter dipped the cube in the absinthe first, lit it on fire, then poured the cold water over. We still have one of the little forks.

Well written article, I gotta get me a bottle of that.

I have seen a bottle from Distilleries Domaines de Provence, that does contain wormwood, as well as thujone. I went to the DDdP site, and verified that it is actually wormwood, not little wormwood. They mentioned that there is a lesser amount of thujone that in EU pre-ban, but, if as the thread article is right, how would they know?

If you come to Canada to buy good liquor, go to Vintages.
