It smelled normal.

Um ... no one's panicking, jackass.

This is fark, headlines are usually exagerated to get a laugh. Mildly curious wouldn't have been as funny.

/anyone notice the poll about what the smell was? NJ is winning.
2005-10-28 09:40:02 AM
Err.. No.. really.. it smells normal in NY and in the subways.

I take the 4 or the 5 from GCS to Bowling Green.. everything is normal. Nothing out of the ordinary.
2005-10-28 09:52:59 AM
I submitted this...naturally, with a better headline.

i live on 99th and third ave. and i smelled the maple syrup last night. i'm scared!
2005-10-28 09:56:01 AM
I have 3 classmates that smelled it. I smelled it in Harlem. Othgers smelt it on the UWS and on roosevelt island
2005-10-28 10:30:43 AM
I'm going to step outside right now (I'm on 80 Broad on Beaver) and do the smell test.

Smookyfufu: I'm going to step outside right now (I'm on 80 Broad on Beaver) and do the smell test.

I didnt smell it this morning in Harlem, at 64th & west end, or near lincoln center. But I distinctly asked my wife last night if she smelled pancakes.

Damn terrorists, now they're taunting us with delicious breakfast foods.

/Pass the bacon Osama
2005-10-28 10:42:35 AM
i don't recall smelling it this morning either on UES, or in East Village near St. Mark's Place.

I was sure it was coming in from the north though.
2005-10-28 11:22:29 AM
Damn terrorists, now they're taunting us with delicious breakfast foods.

Weight Watchers surrenders

/don't smell it in NJ (insert NJ joke here)
2005-10-28 11:23:21 AM
The diabolical terrorists are making us salivate and crave pancakes until we are all morbidly obese, my ass is French Toast!
2005-10-28 11:35:08 AM
Smells pretty normal to me.

2005-10-28 11:52:45 AM
Crap. I've got a cold and can't smell a thing.

And after 9/11, do you realize what it takes to get New Yorkers to panic? Not a Log Cabin spill.
2005-10-28 11:55:32 AM
I happen to know everything there is to know about maple syrup! I love maple syrup. I love maple syrup on pancakes. I love it on pizza. And I take maple syrup and put a little bit in my hair when I've had a rough week. What do you think holds it up, slick?
2005-10-28 12:08:09 PM
...what is that odor hanging over the city?

Good question!

The official answer at this hour is we don't know and neither apparently does anyone else.

Brilliant! Thanks for that.
2005-10-28 12:08:33 PM
Nice try, Karl Rove . . .
2005-10-28 12:08:58 PM
Don't all unusual smells originate in NJ?

Does Vermont have any terrorist activity?

"Ha ha, look at them out there! Okay, Uncle Ben, now it's your turn!"
2005-10-28 12:12:00 PM
Stuck at work... no breakfast... very hungry...

Then I read a headline talking about pancakes and maple syrup and instantly started salivating.

2005-10-28 12:12:51 PM
attack of the pancake bunny?
2005-10-28 12:15:01 PM
I read that in this morning's paper on the train. It always smells like maple syrup this time of year in this city. I've noticed it for years... Now who's crazy, huh?
2005-10-28 12:15:05 PM
"So, what is it? The official answer at this hour is we don't know and neither apparently does anyone else. There's speculation that whatever it is drifted over from New Jersey."

That paragraph made me laugh for some reason.
2005-10-28 12:15:07 PM
Hakim Bey?
2005-10-28 12:20:42 PM
New Yorkers don't panic. This isn't Middle America for a reason.
2005-10-28 12:21:37 PM
A trainload of diabetics with very full bladders just couldn't hold it any longer.
2005-10-28 12:24:57 PM
Smookyfufu: I'm going to step outside right now (I'm on 80 Broad on Beaver) and do the smell test.

Dude, I'm at Wall and Broadway. Tell me how it smells so I'm not surprised.
2005-10-28 12:25:12 PM
I always thought maple syrup had a urine smell in elementary school. Those kids that would come to school early for breakfast and then spill syrup on the table...yup, just like urine. I hated that.
2005-10-28 12:26:26 PM
It's true, got off the subway lastnight after work at the 2nd ave. stop (first st. and first avenue... the nexus of the universe), and was surprised by the phantom smell. It smelled exactly like that cereal "Waffle-Oh's".
Now it's back to that good ol' deisel fuel and bum urine smell.

Thank god.
2005-10-28 12:29:12 PM
I wonder if the rise of biodiesel use is doing this? Though IIRC, biodiesel smells more like french fries than maple...

Whatever. It's NYC. We get smells from NJ all the time - ever notice that nice refinery smell you get once you cross over the river?
2005-10-28 12:29:19 PM
I'm over in Hoboken and my wife and I smelled it in Edgewater last night while driving in my Bimmer. I actually was going to call my dealership because I used to have an old Mustang that smelled like maple syrum whenever the heat was activated. Thought there might have been something wrong with my car.

Then I smelled it at about 5:42 this morning while laying in bed. Immediately threw away the malfunctioning car idea...
2005-10-28 12:31:42 PM
Bubonic plague caused it's victims to smell roses.
2005-10-28 12:32:21 PM
For the record: I regard "pancakes" as one of the funniest words in the English language
2005-10-28 12:32:46 PM
I smelled it up on 110s on the UWS last night, between 10 and 11 PM.
2005-10-28 12:33:03 PM
I smelled it last night (I'm on the UWS) and was going nuts trying to place it. It got to the point where I was trying to see if someone had spilled it somewhere.
2005-10-28 12:33:31 PM
I smelled this last night at PACE U. I was working on a computer on the stage and I could tell it wasn't really a food smell, there was a sort of chemical presence to it. Freaky....
2005-10-28 12:33:39 PM
I work for Aunt Jemima.
So I am really getting a kick really ...
2005-10-28 12:34:05 PM
He who smelt it dealt it?
2005-10-28 12:36:44 PM
Officials are still waffling as to the cause.

/My headline was funnier
2005-10-28 12:39:16 PM

Anyone hear from Smookyfufu? He stepped outside... and ... this is like a bad horror movie!

/Quick where is the screaming broad?
2005-10-28 12:40:39 PM

Um ... no one's panicking, jackass.

No, they are pancaking.

2005-10-28 12:46:02 PM
I'm going to step outside right now (I'm on 80 Broad on Beaver) and do the smell test.

There's a joke there somewhere...
2005-10-28 12:47:43 PM
I've smelled that on the El in Chicago before. I think it's a lubricant or cleaner used on the trains' wheels or undercarriages.

It's sorta maple syrupy, but more... metallic. Brake fluid?
2005-10-28 12:48:29 PM
You are in one is screaming. Thank you for your cooperation.
2005-10-28 12:52:33 PM
Clearly, it was both. Refer to Branched Chain Alpha-Ketoacid Dehydrogenase Deficiency, or BCKD deficiency. Makes your urine smell like maple syrup.

/not even kidding
//seriously, google it
2005-10-28 12:55:42 PM
Damn. I wish the homeless around here had Maple Syrup Syndrome.

did ya pass out dude?

Thank you sHuoReNviOLiN, I remembered reading about a disease that makes your urine smell sweet, I just couldn't recall the name. The real question is, does it taste sweet?
