That was the infamous storm of October, 1923 that tore through downtown Baltimore, transforming many beautiful pieces of Victorian architecture into hideous mangled slums, and tossing many prosperous lives into bitter, dirty chaos.

Someday. Someday, soon. We shall rebuild.

Florida was once Atlantis...

NOAA still has it forecast going pretty much due west.

Baltimore is still bitter, dirty chaos.

That's nothing compared to the time when Utah exploded all over Nevada.

Heeeeey!

What's new in Baltimore?

βoy, I wish I was in βaltimore right now. βut not, you know, on Monday.

If it is anything like Microsoft's betas, Florida will crash and burn.

2005-10-28 12:33:05 AM
All of what I've read has this going to the Pacific. If it doesn't fall apart, it will be named according to whatever's going on in the Eastern pacific. Been a while since something like that happened, think 1984 was the last time an atlantic storm stayed intense enough after crossing over to the pacific to be named.

2005-10-28 12:33:42 AM
Data Pimp: If it is anything like Microsoft's betas, Florida will crash and burn.

It's going to be Nicaragua/El Salvador/Guatemala that crashes and burns. All those mudslides wipe villages off the map. Remember the deadliest hurricane this year was Stan. This might not be that bad, but very likely more deaths than Katrina.

2005-10-28 12:36:55 AM
The next storm will be Gamera, killer turtles fall from the sky.

2005-10-28 12:44:01 AM
Now that these storms are like weekly tribulations.. we really need to get some creative people in there giving them names. Sure alphabetically is nice, but who wants to get their ass kicked by Wilma? To that end.. who is going to evacuate for.. Wilma?

If Hurricane Sauron was off the coast.. people would be packing their bags. It would also push up ratings for the news channels I wager... better names.. better graphics.

More skin on HBO.

Reklin, you have a point. They should name hurricanes with names that are at least as imposing as the names for rollercoasters and laxatives.

I totally agree, Hurricane Vader would have people running for the concrete bunkers.

When I keep reading stuff like this, I keep thinking of good old Henry Rollins spoken word/standup.

"EL NINO? What the hell? We name a killer issue like this 'The Child'? I think they should call it the motherf*cker."

"Today, New Orleans was torn asunder by the wrath of the motherf*cker"

Why don't they make hurricanes illegal?

So....what happens if they have to retire a greek letter hurricane?

2005-10-28 01:44:30 AM
teluekh: So....what happens if they have to retire a greek letter hurricane?

They'd probably skip over it forever. If Beta becomes another huge-ass destructive hurricane, and next year they get past [checks list] William, it would be Alpha, then straight to Gamma.

But that's just me hypothesizing.

Right now New Orleans is wishing more than anything that this year had been an El Nino year.

2005-10-28 02:13:29 AM
Also, if they ever have to get to Tropical Storm Omega, that would probably designate the beginning of the end, so it shouldn't be much of a concern at that point.

2005-10-28 03:19:37 AM
i loaded noaa's historic hurricane ascii file into a database and ran a query for all hurricanes starting this week or later and of the 99, 14 hit land and 6 as hurricanes, 2 as 2's, no majors and 4 1's.

but then again, climatology for a storm usually sucks.

2005-10-28 03:52:12 AM
If "Beta" kills enough people, the name should be retired, except that there is no provision for retiring greek letter names.

Noaa needs to add some more naming rules. Can't retire "Beta"

This is God's way of trying to clear out the wickedness in Florida. When evil prevails, God uses natural disasters to destroy those who fight his Cause.
