Delaware should just become a wholly owned subsidiary of a DuPont, Capital One, and Eli Lilly.

How does a state sell a federal highway?

TheOther: How does a state sell a federal highway?

Very easily. The lawmakers get a nice Big oil anus hitting payoff, and the constituents get a UFIA.

You mean submitter is still undisclosed?

2005-10-25 06:40:54 PM
Worst idea ever.

Lets make a public highway with public funds taken from the public and sell it to a company so that they can take more money from the public for the road they already paid for.

Comedy gold.

I am not even going to read the article. The headline alone is bringing on a strong feeling of hopelessness.

I thought all of Delaware was owned by private companies?

Tin foil hat or just Liberal?

You can still bypass the DE/MD toll by getting off last exit in DE (Newark), head North, Make left at Rte 4, Make left of Elkton Rd...head South into MD, get back on I-95.

Reverse it when travelling North.

Locals never pay the toll. For Suckers!

Why are roads federal when they should be owned by the state.

DE is hilarious. It's like limbo. People can come here and do the things you cant do in most other states (tax free shopping, incorporate your biz for less than the cost it will take to make a sign for your biz), but at the same time DE doesnt have the things that other states have (bars till 2am, a form of USEABLE mass transit). I just got home from driving from Philly on i95, my daily commute. If I have to pay a god damn toll to get into wilmington i am going to end my life. DEAR LORD HELP US.

ah, the people are embracing the ownership society.

2005-10-25 06:54:56 PM
State officials contend a public-private venture would speed completion of work needed at the junction of I-95 and Del. 1, where traffic snarls during the rush hours each weekday

Unavoidable as Rte 1 is pretty much the only major route to South Delaware.

I avoid it like the plague on Summer Sundays, when the shore creatures drive home.

2005-10-25 06:56:38 PM
So if it's privatized and I blow off paying the toll there won't be any highway patrol vehicles there and state speeding and/or drunk driving laws won't apply because it's private property, right?

Didn't think so.

Will the private operators of the road be reimbursing the state for the state police patrols that will still be there?

Didn't think so.

2005-10-25 06:56:56 PM
moops: who goes to delaware anyway? it's worse than jersey.

Actually, funny thing, they have an ~12 mile stretch of I-95, with (IIRC) around 7 dollars in tolls on it...

that and lots of people go through it to get to better beaches (Ocean city)

2005-10-25 06:57:29 PM
good call about the toll bypass. i use that when heading to white marsh.

They are only doing that to i95 so we can get more tourist from DC down to dewey and more homosexuals to Rehoboth BEach

2005-10-25 06:57:56 PM
Thats because they say state law doesnt allow scrutiny by the public or most legislators

What country is Delaware in?

2005-10-25 06:58:48 PM

Something is rotten in the state of Delaware.

Where's Delaware anyways ?

2005-10-25 06:59:18 PM
So both miles of Delaware's interstate highways are going to be owned by private corporations?

Big deal.

2005-10-25 06:59:49 PM
Beavosaurus Rex, it seems no matter where I go here, I can't get away from those green and white awnings. Evil indeed.

2005-10-25 07:00:19 PM
methinks submitter did not RTFA. they're not selling the interstate, they're selling the construction job on the interstate. it is going to one of these three companies: First State Constructors, Shirley Clark Design Build LLC, or SITE-Blauvelt Engineers and Koch Performance Roads. the job can't cost more than $280million.

let me repeat this: they are not selling the interstate. here's an excerpt that spells it out clear as day:

Hayward said public-private partnerships are different from privatization of roads a concept Hayward favors as a way to solve DelDOTs cash crunch.

Hayward said the three public-private partnership proposals could include a full privatization offer, though he does not see full privatization as a likely option for the I-95 overhaul.

Privatization would involve the complete sale of a road to investors, or a 99-year lease. The state would get a cash payment up front, and the business would operate the road and pocket all tolls and other revenue. The contract would set toll levels for the term of the lease and set rules governing maintenance.

Roy said hes not inclined to back a deal that completely privatizes I-95 operations, unless that option is cleared by the task force and the General Assembly.

does that help?

Slight threadjack...

Surprised nobody mentioned the fact that Philly lost yet another rock station.

WYSP went all 'extreme' talk today.

Guess rock can't live w/o Stern leading them in

Why are roads federal when they should be owned by the state.

Most roads are owned by states rather than the federal government, even those that have an Interstate or US route designation. There used to be a law prohibiting tolls on highways built with federal money.

2005-10-25 07:02:30 PM
Delaware has one ugly assed governor.

Guess I have to go back to the old Eastern Shore of MD method of getting to the beach. On the plus side, the toddler will enjoy the bay bridge. On the downside, good old 2 lane roads with speed traps for 60 miles.

Delaware rocks!

Did anyone else read the word "Dell" into the headline, or was that just me?

Ahh we meet again. I stand corrected (I was thinking other wise). My basic point is....well you know.

2005-10-25 07:07:00 PM
So, if the government privatizes everything... what will there be left to be governed?

Anyone remember the movie Freejack?
