Maybe I'm just insane, but this sounds like it could be a setup for a romantic comedy in which the two slash victims meet in the hospital and fall in love.

"While You Were Slashing".

/quick, get Sandra Bullocks on the phone.

The part where they said other passengers were standing around her looking concerned. I guarantee you a whole bunch of people stood around her and watched her scream. But I'd be surprised if any of them talked to her.

It's a peculiar society. And a very cool place to visit. It's like being on another planet.

/wishes he could go back (with metal ass-plate)

If I were submitting this headline I would have tried to work the word "fundamental" in somehow. That's probably why I've never had a submission greenlighted.

2005-10-22 02:09:08 AM
This continues the twenty-year trend of everything I hear/see/read/study about the Japanese convincing me that they are some weird motherfarkers.

Osaka's menace is lessened by her cuteness

2005-10-22 02:58:12 AM
The Chuo line? Hmm. Good thing I never ride that one.

Unless I'm going record shopping at Ochanomuzu. And if anyone slashes my ass when I'm doing that, they're getting a bunch of overpriced Japanese psych reissues jammed up theirs.

The "Japanese ignoring people in pain" thing is overstated, BTW. I've only seen people who look derelict ignored, which makes it roughly on par with NYC.

Now, seeing a salaryman refuse to get up and give his seat to a hunched over old woman...THAT I see all the friggin' time.

2005-10-22 03:10:42 AM
The Chou line and the Yamanote line platforms at Shinjuku. In the last train mania you could get away with lots of shady activities.

/hates catching the last train
/now have to watch for ass slashers as well as grabbers

2005-10-22 03:49:50 AM
I think now we will not only need women only cars but non-slasher only cars....=(

Japan has train gropers and train stashers? Train tentacles and bukkake are next??

2005-10-22 04:42:57 AM
I've been in Yokohama for about a week and will be here for another 4. Until I read this story I felt incredibly safe where ever I went. No actually I still do. I have hardly seen police or heard sirens. Maybe I'm just in a good part of town. I think the people here are great but I know I'll be ready to leave in 4 weeks.

2005-10-22 04:47:01 AM
I totally stapled this one chick on a train once. I love Japan.

2005-10-22 04:55:08 AM
Violence tends to be fairly rare in Japan, but when something happens they report the hell out of it - especially if it happens somewhere busy like Tokyo. I'm sure there's going to be all sorts of computer generated diagrams made and "experts" interviewed to determine the motive of the ass-stabber.

Funny though that there was no report about the housewife that was stabbed to death (three wounds in rapid succession) in broad daylight by her own son in the city I live in. I suppose it could be the very same reason as to why there was no news story on file for the house I used to live next door to where the occupant butchered and ate a Korean woman (the remains of which he dumped later in a ditch).

mistergecko: Other passengers who surrounded her appeared worried about the incident

Ya think?

Actually, given my experience on crowded train platforms in Japan, I'm surprised anyone even noticed. People in this country have a mind-boggling lack of awareness of their surroundings. Seriously, the amount of tunnel-vision staggers the imagination. Notice, the previous sentence to the one quoted above said, "The woman was lying on the platform until paramedics rushed to the scene."

The thoughts of the others on the platform? Probably something along the lines of "best not to get involved. I wouldn't want to miss my train on account of a bleeding person lying on the platform".

Of course, I am willing to bet that the number of people that are CPR/First Aid/AED certified over here are much lower than the US. That will really suck if there is ever a major disaster like a large earthquake.

Not meaning to Japan-bash. Just pointing out what I have seen. I am absolutely not surprised that no one moved to help. Heck I'm not surprised that there is a "butt-slasher" around. In fact, after living here for 4 years, I don't think anything can surprise me anymore.

/still, a nice country to live in though
//just has an amazing ability to make you not surprised by anything
///the cliched tentacle monsters could rise from the deeps tomorrow, and I would probably think "neat! Time for coffee."
////proud to be Japanese CPR/First Aid/AED certified
/////to protect from all of these slashes

A+ on being adventurous man!

Learn whatever it is that makes their kids do so well in school... then come back over here and teach it to the American children.
