(Salt Lake Tribune)   Just in time for Halloween, Utah teacher fired for being a witch. Lucky for her she doesn't live in Salem, Mass.   (sltrib.com) divider line 119

Actually, I kind of like Salem. The Peabody-Essex is a pretty good museum.

Yeah, there's a bunch of witch crap, but when the 'Crucible' is your claim to fame, what are you going to do?

I have not skiied UTAH, but can attest to the awesomeness of Colorado.

Comparing the feathery snow of Utah to the ice of Denver is like saying a Bottle of Opus One Cabernet tastes just like a bottle of Boone's Farm Grape.

I lived not far fom where this happened. Monroe is a small rural town with a population less than 2000. It's even more backward than the rest of Utah.

Utah? Utah...hmmm...Oh yeah. That's the place with the boy's choir right? You would have thought they were catholic.

Utah County and Salt Lake City are two extremely different places. For instance, on my street, the non-Mormons out number the Mormons 2 to 1. I think if any of you ever visited Salt Lake City, you would find it quite open-minded. Our Mayor just received an award for being one of the first in the nation to push for government funded benefits for gay partners who work in city government. Utah County is a whole different story and yes, should be removed from the Union and State as far as I am concerned. The definition of Provo is "13 square mile surrounded by reality"! If you recall, Twoody and I had one of the hottest Fark Parties ever in SLC just last month. Take a look at the photos, I would put our TFettes up against any of yours when it comes to the hot and wild meter. Cut my city and faith a little slack!

"Because she was a provisional employee, he was not required to give a reason for picking Jensen as part of a staff reduction,

Game over."

Err, not necessarily.

"Not required to give a reason" may be quite different, legally, in Utah, than "firing based on unsubstantiated rumor". Looks like they screwed up and left a paper trail, including said rumors.

She may also have a valid slander/libel claim.

I have never had to do that anywhere else in the country.

Again, clearly poster has never been to Salem. They would have made her the principal and given her a place of honor on the reenactment float. Then they would have let her sacrifice her choice of the students currently suspended after she signed an endorsement deal for the next 5 years of tourism promotions.

Been to Salem twice, both times in the middle of October. Almost worth the commuter rail trip (If Smart + Boston students + Poor = No cars).

It has its good parts, like the Peabody and watching the amusing goth/witch types and its kitchy parts, like the witchcraft-themed tourist market they set up in the middle of town. Its worth doing once if you're in the Boston area with a medium-sized group of friends who want to get out of the city for a weekend in October.

Any wiccan who moves there is an idiot.

What about your hometown? I thought the people's Republic of Cambridge was supposed to the home of people doin' their own thing. What's with the hostility?

Touche. I should have been more explicit: I've known wiccans whose dream it is to move to Salem, like its some sort of Wiccan Holy City. Why any witch would want to move to a city whose claim to history is hanging suspected witches is beyond me. They weren't Wiccans either; the victims were good God-fearing Christians.

I don't ask about the religion of the people who work for me and don't really bring it up. I prefer making sure I can't be sued by never asking. We laugh, have fun, get our work done, but I leave anything that could get me into trouble alone. I would, however, not have a problem if one of my people were a wiccan. I don't see how it matters at work, unless they want to do something on the clock that would be either counter-productive or infringe on others somehow.

2005-10-21 01:03:11 PM
I don't see anything in the story that leads me to believe the teacher is, in fact, a Wiccan. I think the teacher just was "different" and the school freaked out. He's wearing green on thursday! He's a witch! That old woman has too many cats! A witch! That girl is playing monopoly and giving $500 every time you pass "go"! A witch!

Bah, that is nothing. I am also here in Salt Lake, and part of the Pagan community. You can't swing a dead cat in this city without hitting a Wiccan. I, on the other hand, am a practicing Druid.

My wife is a wiccan... and it is fairly well known in pagan circles that Wicca is not nearly as much of a religion as it is a personal expression of ones spirituallity. for instance, having known many wiccans and many X-ions in my day I can compare. X-Ions are split up neetly into how ever many groups, each group going about their beliefe in a very regimented way...

Wiccan ritual / belief is a very individual thing, rituals and such being different, sometimes VASTLY different from one believer to another.

I've never understood why Wicca was such a direct enemy (if you ask the X-ions. that is) of X-ianity. heres a belief system that does not activly recruit...believes only in nature and the natural way of things. and truely acts more like the idealized X-ion belief system that any X-ion i've ever met IE: turn the other cheek etc. their motto? "an it harm no-one, your will be done"

oh..I guess Wicca makes jeebus's homeboys look bad......

btw, no hell or Satan in Wicca... so its funny when they are called devil worshipers. and I always call X-ions on that fact when I hear them discussing Wicca.

Simple: Any worship that is not directed at the Christian God is idol worship and a product of Satan's corruption. You don't have to worship Satan to be distracted from God by Satan.

Although it is more likely the product of most Christians ignorance of Wiccans and "groupthink" (or "group not think").

Anyway, how do you make the leap from Xian to "X-ion"? Are you comparing Christians to sub-atomic particles somehow?

Firing someone for religious beliefs is wrong. Period. I hope she sues and makes a ton of money.

Just to play devils advocate (and because I hate it when people make absoloute statements and add in "period" as if that is supposed to end the conversation):

A Catholic School shouldn't be able to fire a theology teacher if he converts to Mormanism?

(Hint, the law says he can be fired based on religion in this case.)

Seriously, what's so freaking hard about spelling out "Christianity"? X-ian, xtian, x-ion (wtf?)

Honestly, is it a subtle slight on Christians, or just pure laziness? And to boot, don't expect any real respect from the members of ANY other religion (especially those you think are oppressing you) when you refuse to do them the common courtesty of spelling the name of their religion correctly.

/not Christian
//thinks x- variants are idiotic

Doesn't this deserve an assinine tag?

I read the article, and beyond alleging (not proving) that she kept blood in the fridge, they don't seem to have a case against her other than 'ooh, she's not christian' It doesn't seem to be a private school, so it seems that they're going to take it in the shorts in court. Them bringing up poor test scores seems like legal backpeddaling.

Clearly, you have never been skiing in Iowa or Michigan. That's the Boone's Farm of wine.
And Colorado has amazing skiing. I've skiied Utah, and the snow is great, but give me a sunny day in Summit County any time!

Raven hair and ruby lips
Sparks fly from her finger tips
Echoed voices in the night
Shes a restless spirit on an endless flight

Wooo hooo witchy woman, see how
High she flies
Woo hoo witchy woman she got
The moon in her eye

She held me spellbound in the night
Dancing shadows and firelight
Crazy laughter in anotherRoom
and she drove herself to madness
With a silver spoon

Woo hoo witchy woman see how high she flies
Woo hoo witchy woman she got the moon in her eye
Well I know you want a lover,

Let me tell your brother, shes been sleeping
In the devils bed.
And theres some rumors going round
Someones underground
She can rock you in the nighttime
til your skin turns red

Woo hoo witchy woman
See how high she flies
Woo hoo witchy woman
She got the moon in her eye

I have said this before:
Go to Salt Lake City and take the temple tour. You will be shown giant murals of events THAT NEVER HAPPENED. There is no historical or archeological evidence whatsoever. However, you will be surronded by people going "ohhh" and "ahhh" as the tour guide explains these events.

Moroni, standing on the battlements of a castle that never was talking to a tribe of Isriel that never was. And all the while the folks around you are nodding in agreement.

It is the one and only time I felt like I was in a Twilight Zone episode. I smiled and got the fark out of Salt Lake.

Should be "Salem Village", the town next door, which renamed itself 'Danvers' to get away from all the bad publicity.

Actually, Salem is witch/Halloween central these days. It's a huge tourist gimick. On the upside, if you are Wiccan it's a place where you can be so openly because it's not at all unusual.
