That was too funny. Come on people, quit sweating the little shiat.

2005-10-20 02:20:30 PM
I always thought it was mexi-can't.

/not racist

2005-10-20 02:21:49 PM
Too bad it wasn't Virginia Tech. They would've had a Ron Mexi-cam.

2005-10-20 02:21:53 PM
That was clever, and I found myself laughing at it. Plus, the guy worked for the people who wrote the "Mexi-Cam" thing, so he probably was in on it.

It was offensive? Was he Venezuelan or something?

2005-10-20 02:22:09 PM
Pardon me if I don't see what the problem is here...is mentioning or referencing Mexicans offensive now? Must have missed that memo.

2005-10-20 02:23:28 PM
All while no one, of course, is worried that NC State trained the "Al Queda" London bombings chemist.

2005-10-20 02:24:38 PM
No dildocam?

2005-10-20 02:25:27 PM
RIP, paradecam.

2005-10-20 02:26:25 PM
Would it have been offensive if they'd focused on a guy with a "stars & Stripes" shirt and labeled it "Ameri-Cam"?

2005-10-20 02:26:34 PM

I don't care who you are that's funny right there, I tell you what.

2005-10-20 02:27:06 PM
I bet Ameri-Cam would have been perfectly acceptable. What is the effin difference?

2005-10-20 02:27:09 PM
That's quality humor. I wish there were pics of it though.

2005-10-20 02:27:42 PM
EFF YOU!!!

2005-10-20 02:28:07 PM
It's a well known fact that folks who graduate from NC State have very tired lips.

2005-10-20 02:28:20 PM
State needs to start issuing bags for their fans heads now, they're season is so far in the toilet.

This incident, it seems, is the only bright spot.

/Ay caramba!
//Dennis Rodman, now a Mexican rebounding guy, eeees offended, senor!

2005-10-20 02:28:32 PM
Last year a tailgating NC State fan got shot and killed in the parking lot by some local 'neck and they're worried about a joke on the jumbotron?

N.C. State's student newspaper, The Technician

Having worked for Technician for 2 years, I can tell you that they got the name of the paper wrong.

2005-10-20 02:29:32 PM
I prefer the term 'Mexi-capable'.

asshats. sorry but that IS funny.

2005-10-20 02:30:56 PM
It's punny. Who's offended now?

2005-10-20 02:33:06 PM
I have a Mexican friend that refers to herself as "The Hispanic Causin' Panic". I bet she'll jump all over the 'Mexi-Cam" deal.

2005-10-20 02:37:18 PM
I thought the "mexi-cam" was rather "mexcellent" and I am mexican. :)

2005-10-20 02:39:23 PM
"extremely poor" ?? taste?

I suppose if the image they showed was 20 fat Mexicans guys with ponchos and big hats sleeping against trees with a caption that read "Typical" I'd get the offense.

"audacity, prejudice and disgrace" ??

C'mon. It was a fan, not some charicature. It would only be offensive to the fan if he's not Mexican, and even then it shouldn't offend anyone else.

It's not like they flashed this up on the Jumbotron:

Speaking on behalf of Mexicans everywhere...this is pretty pinche funny.

2005-10-20 02:49:02 PM
Well, it's not like they knew that the people they showed were even Mexican. They just picked two hispanic looking people out of the crowd and put "Mexi-cam" under it. It's like finding two white guys and putting Pollack-cam under it. I figure if you're Brazilian, you probably wouldn't appreciate having your picture up on the Jumbotron and labled Mexican in front of thousands of people.

Now if you're wearing a sombrero and eating a burrito that's your own damn fault.

"With so much national attention that this game received, such a childish stunt merely confirmed to the outside world that N.C. State is a redneck school."

Note to editor: Get... over... yourself.

The game was on ESPN on a Thursday. I couldn't find the Nielsen ratings, probably because they were so low to be irrelevant.

It isn't as if ESPN put the Mexi-cam on TV, did they?

NC State _is_ a redneck school. It's a rather good one too, though, if you're studying textiles or engineering. So who cares?

Archimedean

I agree that the writer needs to get over himself, but cut the guy some slack. They are just coming to terms with the fact that their football team does indeed suck.

2005-10-20 03:12:29 PM
The team is more offensive than the "mexicam." I was there but didn't notice it...my head was buried in my hands.

/Jay Davis sucks
//Phillip Rivers is actually the best offensive coordinator we've ever had

2005-10-20 03:12:48 PM
The article doesn't even name who complained!

Is it still possible to secede from the USSA?

2005-10-20 03:24:17 PM
That Mexicam would find plenty of people to film where i live.

"The person featured on the video screen was a CanesVision employee, and company director Pete Soto has sent a letter of apology to the university, Hanlin said."

Under no circumstances should you RTFA.

2005-10-20 04:06:12 PM
I can sort-of see both sides... if the employee filmed was indeed Mexican (or not offended by being referred to as Mexican), then there isn't any real harm done -

But then again, finding humor in simply singling out someone for their nationality or race does skirt a little close to the border of racist behavior, so an apology is probably in order.

(I've been singled out in a crowd before. As the only white guy in a strip club once. It was pretty damn funny, actually!)

2005-10-20 04:06:23 PM
This should complete the "Wolfpack Trifecta" right?

First, Gavin Grant's going to get deported
Then, Hodge is tabbed for sexual assault in Denver (hey man -- he's just trying to fit in with the other NBA players, cut him some slack)
And now, we've got the Mexi-Cam!

Woohoo! Wolfpack in the HOUSE!

(side note: we ARE a redneck school -- but we're a darn good one)

As an alumnus of NCSU and former Editor in Chief of Technician (with *no* preceding "The"), this is embarassing in so many ways. As bad as the football team sucks, what makes it worse is that the coach (and I use that term loosely) and the athletics director think everything is fine as is... Uncle Rico could probably do as good of a job behind center, and he produced the worst video ever! The "preseason favorite" defense hasn't stopped anything with a pulse. The only stats the team leads in is penatlies and yards, mostly false starts on both sides of the ball and late hits. This shows how poorly coached a team it is. Forget offensive coordinator, Philip Rivers is the best *coach* (except maybe Norm Chow) that the team has had in the Amato years.

The local media's "why are the fans upset? do they expect a ten win season" pandering is pathetic. We just want to win six games to be bowl eligible. We want to beat teams that on paper we *should* beat. Saturday's game is the closest Wake Forest is going to come to a bowl game environment, and the pack will be its normal, unprepared self.

Also embarasing is the Technician editorial staff... If they didn't write the column about mexi-cam, no one would have known or cared. Student newspaper staffs are filled with resume-padding attention whores... they should just call for the head of the head coach, like we used to back in my day and lead the chuck Chuck (and maybe Herb) charge.

If MaryAnn Fox was still in Raleigh, Chuck the chest would have a *legit* for sale sign out in front of his house by now.

Nations: Mexico, France, Canada.
Races: White, Black, Asian.

You can't choose your race, but you can renounce/change/embrace/switch your nationality.

Picking on things you CAN change is perfectly acceptable in my book. (This covers clothes selection, career choice, etc.) Nations and nationalities are contrived, manmade, artificial. If we can't pick on Mexicans, we can't pick on the French or the Canadians, either.

When I think "Mexican," I don't always think of the awful sombrero-wearing sterotype. It's the people who DO think of that stereotype who cluck their tongues when someone does say the word "Mexican." They're the ones with the small minds.

2005-10-20 04:59:40 PM
stinky_pete: they should just call for the head of the head coach

Actually right next to Mexicam editorial was a column doing just that. It even made the good point that we hear calls for Herb's head when they lose to legitimate teams in basketball but you never hear calls for Chuck's head when they lose against chumps.

And LordVger, I just skimmed the article since I already knew the story. The original editorial didn't mention that point. Shows you what they (and I) know. Still looks bad to everyone else in the stadium though...

2005-10-20 05:45:51 PM
So what is the big deal? Mexi-Cam. So what? I don't see how that can even be thought of as offensive. Can someone explain it to me?

2005-10-20 06:05:43 PM
Is this a mexi-cam?

Or a mexi-cam't?

/slashy goodness

2005-10-20 06:25:06 PM
I don't get it either. Was it the kissing cam that people found offensive?

Surely it couldn't have actually been the Mexi-cam!?

I mean seriously, I am looking deep into my white man's guilt and I am having trouble phlegming anything up on this, not even a little booger of guilt, not even a dry cough of shame.

Yeah, it is knee slapping humor in its stoopidest form, but racially offensive?

Shees, its not like they said something like "Mexi-cam's take the jobs even the Bla-cams don't want"

duncangonuts

You see, even though I'm from Raleigh, I can't bemoan NCSU's current pathetic state because my PhD alma mater (and my parents' alma mater), Rutgers, is 4-2 and just might finally go to a bowl game outside New Jersey (the Garden State Bowl doesn't count).

And sorry, I can't cut too much slack here, since as stinky_pete pointed out, if the students on the paper had just shut up, this embarrassment probably wouldn't have made major news.

stinky_pete

When were you the editor-in-chief of Technician? And, I might as well ask, what would you have done in this situation?

2005-10-20 06:43:34 PM
What did you expect from an agriculture (read: hick) school?

2005-10-20 09:20:22 PM
Not to mention the major league smack down that the boyz from Clemson put on their team..

GO TIGERS !
