When you live in the Philly suburbs, you're like "...oh Christ. A cop..."

When you live in Philly, you're like "Thank God! Cops are around!"

2005-10-18 01:37:07 PM
Philly is only dangerous if your name is Jimmy Johnson and you're the coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

2005-10-18 01:39:09 PM
"Detroit, with a violent crime rate of about 1,657 per 100,000, was the least safe of the top ten cities."

Nobody told me it was Opposite Day.

Just this morning I read about how the murder rate is heading back up in this city.

Come to Memphis. Heh heh. Welcome.

.

The author of that article has never been to northwest Philly. I challenge him to take a stroll down any side street off of north broad, especially arround Temple.

How about the lovely and scenic District of Columbia?

How about the lovely and scenic District of Columbia?

Don't forget all of the Maryland suburbs too. Stay on your side of the river, you freaks!

That's right! Stay out of Virginia, Lebowski!

Philadelphia is safe?

My ass it is -- the reports are downgraded under pressure from Street/Abraham. I've never felt less safe in a city than I do here.

Hell, a couple of years back I had someone try to car jack me in front of Temple U -- and he only failed because I got to my gun faster than he got to his. Not that I had to shoot -- he ran like a little girl once he realized I had him, but still, if I hadn't had it, I'd be short a car and probably my life.

2005-10-18 01:49:45 PM
umm, according to the article, philadelphia and detroit are the least safe of the top 10 biggest cities. WTF is submitter talking about? Though Philly does have Camden nearby to make it look better in comparison.

Can't you get them to put some kind of barrier in the new Wilson Bridge so we can stop them from pouring over our border into Alexandria?

beirut looks better in comparison to camden ;)

I'm shocked, absolutely SHOCKED, that Baltimore does not appear on that short list.

Total lies about Philadelphia. It is a horrible place where Young Urban Proffessionals should never think about moving to with their SUVS and spawn in tow. A rape and a mugging is our way of saying, "Hi!" and we eat cheesesteaks for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tourists are welcomed to come, but they should be in by nightfall and most certainly shouldn't stray from designated areas and they certainly should say the HELL away from my favorite bars.

Once again, New Yorker, PA and South Jersey Suburbanites, if you find a cheap house here that means it is haunted by one of Ben Franklin's sex slaves. Ever have a ghost poop on your stomach?

Homosexuals roam the streets holding hands in public. We had one Suburban Professional who heard that housing prices were incredible and picked up a sweet deal who woke up in his charming two-bedroom townhouse in Fishtown with a homosexual gang member holding a knife to his throat while another one suckled blood from a slit vein in his wrist.

No one who ever moved here ever got out alive. You have been warned. Philly is a terrible place. Do not move here.

I was trying to figure out if you were being sarcastic, but I started laughing too hard at this to finish my thought.

Submitter shoulda been held back a grade; apparently can't read. Published numbers are for the The rankings of the ten biggest U.S. cities, not the top 10 safest big cities. Don't worry, Detriot is still offically a hell hole.

2005-10-18 02:11:35 PM
"It was a rough place - the seediest dive on the wharf. Populated with every reject and cutthroat from Bombay to Calcutta. It's worse than Detroit."

Guarantee you that Gary, Ind. is the least safe city in America.

"Oh shiat, a red T!! Turn around right now!!!"

~Said by me when my friend was lost and we drove past a Temple University flag on Broad Street.

2005-10-18 02:23:45 PM
Heh, when it comes to violence this is all heaven compared to Recife, Brazil. But when it comes to beaches and cheap beer, America loses.

2005-10-18 02:31:29 PM
Um, can I point out the (obviously not very) obvious here.

The "chart" is the crime ranking of JUST the 10 largest US cities. Its not the Top 10 safest cities. Just the 10 largest US cities, is order of crime.

So, hense, the headline is teh stupid.

2005-10-18 02:32:19 PM
And I'll agree with Atvar, Gary,IN, in cities over 100,000 population generally makes the Top 5 unsafest.

RyoShin: I was trying to figure out if you were being sarcastic, but I started laughing too hard at this to finish my thought.

Nope. Not sarcastic. We eat babies. I had a baby cheesesteak on an Amoroso roll for lunch and I am having a baby hoagie on an Amoroso's roll from Wawa for dinner. They go good with Yuengling.

Don't. Move. Here. Suburbanite.

2005-10-18 02:50:44 PM
SockMonkeyHolocaust

Hell, the baby eating thing would definitely be a plus.

If I've got to deal with one more main line biatch with a bad dye job, an oversize SUV with Haverford school tags, and a squalling brat interrupting my power lunch at Rouge I'm gonna shiat.

2005-10-18 02:53:02 PM
Did the submitter RTFA? They were comparing crime statistics of the ten biggest US cities, NOT the ten safest.
This obviously conflicts with the Philadelphia Inquirer report that I read this morning about the murder rate going back up. On pace for 380, up about 50 for the year. WAHOO!

2005-10-18 02:53:34 PM
Did you even RTFA, submitter?

2005-10-18 02:53:42 PM
I'll just stay in the cozy little Orange County bubble, thank you very much.

"Chicago did not report forcible rape totals"

Oh, okay then.

2005-10-18 02:55:14 PM
Oh how I hate anything associated with Haverford.

2005-10-18 02:55:30 PM
Did they exclude West Philly? Last month there was a running gun battle between cops and 2 would-be armed robbers that ended on my block. Do they tally that as -2 armed robberies or something?!?

We're knee deep in ghost poop over here.

I read somewhere that Sylvester Stallone is going to direct and star in "Rocky 6".

Scary tag indeed.

How about the lovely and scenic District of Columbia?

Going down. Gentrification means pushing crime and gangs out to the suburbs. Prince George's County is getting worse.

2005-10-18 02:58:15 PM
it would be a heck of a lot easier to interpret these figures if they normalized by the city's current population. or s'th.

2005-10-18 02:59:22 PM
Today's Philadelphia Inquirer said that as of yesterday, there were 299 murders in the city, which means we will likely have the highest numer of murders this year (by year's end) than we have since 1997. FYI.

Funny, this article came out today:

Murder Rates On The Rise In Philadephia (pops)

2005-10-18 03:00:24 PM
Submitter must be the same guy that told Dubya there were WMD's in Iraq.

2005-10-18 03:00:37 PM
Try the Pioneer Square area in Seattle about bar closing time. Gangs rules / beaten people drool.

2005-10-18 03:01:19 PM
Thats not really northwest philly, I consider temple an area onto itself considering its size.

I consider Northwest philly the Mt. Airy, Germantown, Chestnut Hill Area.

And I will gladly walk down any of those streets without fear. I'll even take a bus to olney terminal in the middle of the night.

Most places have this bad tough guy rap and it really is unwarranted. There are bad parts of every city. New York, Philadelphia, and Detroit have tried to clean up signifigantly in order to be viewed as world class cities.

2005-10-18 03:01:30 PM
Don't worry fellow Detroiters. Now that Kwame has removed his earring, everything's going to get better.

2005-10-18 03:01:56 PM
Third for Gary.

And the MD suburbs of DC arn't so bad.

/Woke up in Washington Adventist on Saturday
//Though it was from alcohol poisoning obtained on Knox road at UMD
///Hammond stays out of Gary, Gary Stays out of Hammond

Philly is safe because Goretti girls are on the prowl.

SockMonkey: "I had a baby cheesesteak on an Amoroso roll for lunch and I am having a baby hoagie on an Amoroso's roll from Wawa for dinner."

Was that wid or widdout?

2005-10-18 03:03:56 PM
By "safest" you mean least safe of the ten biggest cities in America.

2005-10-18 03:04:19 PM
Maybe they are comparing them to Baghdad and Fallujah and they just made it a 51st state without telling anyone.

Stay Classy San Diego!
