I like the circular ring one with the crosshair in the center, where you have to move your head closer to and then back away from the screen.

/Dissapointed that the "Trippy" Almonds were not included on that page.

I finally got the wheely things to stop turning...but now my monitor is rotating.
2005-10-10 07:50:10 PM
This is amazing!
If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, you will only see one color, pink.
If you stare at the black + in the center, the moving dot turns to green.
Now, concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture.

After a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating.
It's amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear. This should be proof enough, we don't always see what we think we see.POPS

Yeah, I like the dragon too. Check the main page ( for a bunch of other neat stuff. I like these guys because they base their illusions on science (mostly psychology and physics), and make your eyes bleed.

The first one seemed to be moving, until I fixed on one spot. After that, my eye seemed to automatically fixate on one spot, even when I tried to keep it from doing so, and none of them appeared to move. Well, a few, a little, but nothing to make me reach for the barf-bags I keep in my desk for internet moments.

Illusions aren't optical: they are in your mind.

Anyone else notice that after you watch Just Ignorant's almond illusion and as you scroll down in order to read the rest of the thread, the almonds appear to move?

Not just relatively up/down on the screen, but they appear to rotate even with respect to the point on the HTML page on which they are located.

May I interest you in the Church of Last Thursdayism?
I have reason to beleive we were all created last thursday.
Any evidence to the contrary such as memories, scars and dinosaur bones were place here to test our faith in god.

I suggest you join unless you wish to face eternal damnation. I feel it is my divine obligation to save as many people from a horrible and painful afterlife and as such I am trying to convert everyone to Last Thursdayism. Won't you please join?

i used to have a screensaver type thing that looked like some of those. it would spin around these spiral things. if stared into it for about ten seconds then stared at something else it would look like it was growing. it was pretty trippy.

i spent way to much time in college staring at that thing.

The dragon illusion is really cool. There is a site where you can print out the dragon and fold the paper to make the illusion. Close one eye and move around, the head will follow you.

Ok so the boats rotate but the sheep don't... what gives?

//so disturbed that I'm about to call a neurologist
2005-10-10 10:09:53 PM
For the sheep to work you have to move your head around while looking at the cross in the center... most of the later illusions are like that.
2005-10-10 10:11:34 PM
By the way, be sure to scroll down on the submitted link.. I spent 10 minutes on the first image, not knowing there was a whole world of headaches to follow.

2005-10-10 10:42:34 PM

yeah, i don't see a boat either. all i see is a woman with very large breasts dressed in very skimpy attire and positioned very provocatively. it's almost as if the sexual appeal of the woman in the photograph is rendering me unable to notice anything else in the same photograph, because i am so intensely aroused by looking at the woman.

i'd say that's more or less the gist of the situation here.
2005-10-10 10:53:42 PM

The real illusion is that that's a dude!

2005-10-11 02:13:35 AM
After 3 years doing 3d graphics work, these no longer all work. I'd say that about 3/4 of them work on the "untrained eye" but cease to work on a trained eye.

For the most part it's the static field effect ones that don't work. Ones that involve moving your eyes still seem to work because they're based off cone-more' on the retina
2005-10-11 02:32:09 AM
shanrick that gif is farkin insane. I opened it in animation shop just to be sure it was legit and it is, nothing but the circle of pink dots with 1 taken out each frame so it seems to rotate around. But that is farkin insane with the green dot and then all the pink dissapearing. Just goes to show you if you stare at anything long enough maybe you will see the face of god.
2005-10-11 02:34:48 AM
DoorFrame: It's an awesome thing to have on the desk.

Yep. It's been there for a year now. I try remember to look at it as I leave the room. Gives me a chuckle. Also got the almond-illusion printed out.
