Too bad that after the new earthquake they have to measure it all again.

2005-10-09 10:32:34 AM
Maybe everywhere else is just higher than we thought

2005-10-09 10:32:38 AM
That's gotta be one helluva tape measure.

2005-10-09 10:34:13 AM
Get that mountain some V1agra, stat!

2005-10-09 10:36:39 AM
Teach 'em to carb Tommy.

2005-10-09 10:37:22 AM
couldn't the measurement be subject to interpretation? just what exactly defines sea level? the atlantic ocean sits slightly above/below the pacific ocean. so what defines true sea level?

and with the indian subcontinent still crashing into asia, wouldn't it constantly be changing? not to mention earthquakes, weathering, etc.

someone get me a geolist, stat!!

Q: How high is a Chinese mountain?

A: Yes.

Q: Yes?

A: Yes.

Q: How high is a Chinese mountain?

A: YES! Hou Hi is a Chinese mountain!

/thanks Benny Hill & Co.

Let's see you all keep it up after 6 billion years... :p

I'd like to thank my trusty Sherpa guide for holding the top end of the tape measure.

moops: just what exactly defines sea level?

The common reference point is MSL, Mean Sea Level. That's why sometimes when you see the height of a point, it'll have AMSL after it--Above Mean Sea Level.

2005-10-09 10:56:53 AM
I'm sure that everyone who's climbed it will be glad to know they had an easier time than they originally thought.

2005-10-09 10:57:56 AM
I think they should call Hugh Grant instead.

/obscure?

Mount Everest actually stands at 29,017ft two inches above sea level, some 13ft less than scientists had believed.

This is more proof that George Bush refusing to sign the Kyoto Accords is causing more global warming which is causing the ice caps melt which in turn is hurting women and minorities more than anyone else.

2005-10-09 11:05:54 AM
I am confused. The 1975 measurement was 29,028. This measurement says the mountain is 29,017 plus 11 feet of ice, correct? Did they actually just measure the ice and deduct it from the 1975 measurement? Does this analysis ignore the 1999 study that put it at 29,035?

2005-10-09 11:07:07 AM
Amazing!!!
The hight of this mountain seems to change every other year or so. It's amazing that they can't even get this right but there is virtually no problem with them accepting the theory of global warming which has no evidence at all.
Freaks.

K2 is a chinese mountain. Oh wait...

2005-10-09 11:26:19 AM
Yes, Lerxst2k, as is well known in the scientific community, any failure on the part of any scientist or geologist (or cartographer) in any discipline has the effect of discrediting the entire scientific community, even in fields unrelated to that of the error.

*bows head in despair*

damn it feels good to be a gangsta: I think they should call Hugh Grant instead.

Well obscure.

An Englishman Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain.

/Worked on director's previous flick
//Why the Englishman wanked off down a mountian is kinda weird

farkingfinch:
Does this analysis ignore the 1999 study that put it at 29,035?

Yeah, I was thinking that too. Especially since it was done using multiple GPS receivers and with a high degree of accuracy.

Here's a link or two about the 1999 expedition.

2005-10-09 11:37:53 AM
Maybe it's sinking????

/You didn't think of that, did you, Tibetan measurer???

2005-10-09 11:39:44 AM
Who gives a damn. I think this should have necessitated a "still no cure for cancer" headline.

2005-10-09 11:41:23 AM
i saw its 100.000ft high!

2005-10-09 11:50:07 AM
doesnt it shrink 5cm a year by natural crap?

/what i heard

2005-10-09 11:50:41 AM
Doesn't somebody here work for Mount Everest?

Not that any encouragment is needed.

Furthermore, this shrinkage contradicts Global Warming theory!!!!

So they can't use GPS to get an accurate measurement of Everest but they use GPS on airliners to do autopilot landings now.

Wow, I now feel really comfortable flying.

2005-10-09 12:03:28 PM
I heard that in 1975, it was determined that it was EXACTLY 29,000 ft. Surveyors worried that the public would consider this an estimate, so they falsely reported the height as 29,028 ft.

Hey, look at all of those apples! They're all messed up!! The oranges are probably screwed up, too!

/thinks ecofreaks are scary

The absurd things people say sometimes. One could say it's a highly controversial theory, but no evidence at all? What sort of brain washing enables one to make such a ridiculous assertion?

I think the Headline: Latest optional extra on mosquitos: glowing testicles would have made better use of still no cure for cancer. You can't beat a reference to Cheech and Chong.

2005-10-09 12:30:52 PM
Hey, maybe Everest shrunk because it got wet. Everybody knows about "shrinkage", right?

2005-10-09 12:41:41 PM
That mountain is like, so high, man.

2005-10-09 12:42:14 PM
Theres no such thing as too high. The damage just makes your personality stronger.

Damage spurs growth. Marijuana increases blood flow. Get the picture?

2005-10-09 12:45:20 PM
Why bother arguing over differences in fluid interface elevations?

The highest mountain in the world is Mauna Kea in Hawaii, rising 33474 feet from sea floor to summit.

2005-10-09 12:48:11 PM
nice headline. first laugh of the day

The latest measurement of Mount Qomolangma, the Tibetan name of the mountain, was carried out by Chinese researchers and updates the figure taken in 1975.

The new figure also differs from a 1999 measurement by US scientists, which put the height of Mount Everest at 29,035ft.

what

2005-10-09 12:57:30 PM
Actually, the highest POINT in the world is NOT Everest. Mt Chimborazo in Ecuador is the highest point because of the extra height from the equator where it is situated. Everest is the highest mountain however.

2005-10-09 01:04:37 PM
Boo to you all misinformed... Everest is the HIGHEST point on earth. (above sea level), NOT the tallest mountain.

There's a mountain near Hawaii that starts far underwater (and procedes quite high above sea level too) that measured from bottom to top would be the tallest mountain.

Mt. Figi is number 2 from what I recall.

2005-10-09 01:07:11 PM
You know, I used to think that Marin County was named after Cheech. How wrong I was.

2005-10-09 01:08:19 PM
So. The Ecuadorians finally got to you, medazinol?

2005-10-09 01:11:03 PM
It was that goddamned helicopter landing on it that smushed the top down. (video here)

2005-10-09 01:20:42 PM
So it's NOT THAT HIGH huh? Would someone like to jump off of it to demonstrate?

jake3988: Boo to you all misinformed...

Boo yourself. Why do you bore us with your smattering when solid information is just a mouse click away?

Quote from Wikipedia:

Everest is the mountain whose summit attains the greatest distance above sea level. Two other mountains are sometimes claimed as alternative "highest mountains on Earth". Mauna Kea in Hawaii is highest when measured from its base; it rises over 9 km when measured from its base on the mid-ocean floor, but only attains 4,170 m above sea level. The summit of Chimborazo in Ecuador is 2,168 m farther from the Earth's centre (6384.4 km) than that of Everest (6382.3 km), because the Earth bulges at the Equator. However, Chimborazo attains a height of 6,310 m above sea level, by which criterion it is not even the highest peak of the Andes.

2005-10-09 01:34:14 PM
And Denali in Alaska looks tallest because there aren't any other almost-as-tall mountains around it.

2005-10-09 01:42:04 PM
This from the Chinese who still claim to have ascended Everest before Hilary and Tenzing....

Pete Athan's group put Trimble gps units on the mtn that are still in operation so if anyone wants to re-measure talk to them.

2005-10-09 02:17:47 PM
I work for Mount Everest.

So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.

But trust me.... You don't.

I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you dont know what you are talking about.

This is how bad info gets passed around.

If you dont know about the topic....Dont make yourself sound like you do.

Cuz some Farkers believe anything they hear.

2005-10-09 02:18:33 PM
Sorry, couldn't help myself there...

2005-10-09 02:21:21 PM

Damn those Chinese eh? Always lying and trying to put the white man down ... how DARE they !

The Incredible Shrinking Mt. Everest?

I guess all it needs is some V1@GR@ from Hotmail spambox!

Or is it the mole people, from K2?
