it's pretty much the same to me - as in, "no farking way would I live in either place."

one cult is much like any other. until one runs the government, then it pretty much sucks.

Makes complete sense to me. I hate those religious whack jobs.

2005-10-08 02:19:43 PM
religious extremism of any flavor is still religious extremism.

Exactly. Recently mormons in the state legistlature wanted to seriously review a bill that would make polygamy legal again. There are times when I see little difference between mormonism and islam.

2005-10-08 02:21:01 PM
yes, the church does rule the government and the culture there but comparing it to the Taliban rule is quite a stretch.

I tried to buy beer last night at 12:01. Evidently the taliban legislature of Virginia has decreed that I cannot buy beer after midnight.

My belief in keeping religion and state separate was only strengthen by living in Utah for over three years.

I sure don't want my tax dollars going to any religion I don't believe it. Would anybody ... unless your religion is the "in" thing at the moment?

/Evangelical anyone?

SLC Punk offers some great commentary on the blue laws of Utah including a classic trip to Wyoming. It is recommended viewing for my fellow TFers.

My parents live in Utah, and I stayed there for a year.

I'd be on the riding lawnmower with a beer in one hand, a cigarette in my mouth, long hair, wearing my Bart Simpson "Eat my shorts" t-shirt, and families would stop their cars and stare as if I was some kind of zoo animal.

What a weird place.

That had to be the most NON informative article I've ever read on Fark. And that's saying something.

I'm left wondering WHO is doing the oppressing, WHAT did they they do that was so terrible. WHERE do they live? WHY did they do this terrible unmentioned thing and HOW did they get away with it?

2005-10-08 02:46:12 PM
I didn't read the article but I will say this...Utah is as friendly as you are. My oldest son has lived there for 13 years and he likes it there. It is a beautiful state.

Once when we (my husband and I) were stranded in a small town (Kanab) about 15 years ago we were treated well. The residents were friendly, hospitable and graceious.

People in general will treat you as you treat them.

I think the appropriate response is to stone him to death.

2005-10-08 02:55:39 PM
Did someone say "polygamy"?

/consdiers relocation to Utah
//considers dealing with multiple wives
///weighs the pros and cons
////can't afford any pros, and tend to be afraid of sleeping with cons...

rppp01a: Recently Mormons in the state legistlature wanted to seriously review a bill that would make polygamy legal again.

I vowed I would convert to Mormonism if they ever brought that law back (assuming those Mormon triplets I knew back in college are still single).

2005-10-08 02:56:34 PM
... meh. The Mormons don't walk around town with fully automatic weapons and they don't knock on my door.

/They don't bug me all that much

in Nevada, you can buy booze 24-7!

...on the other hand, that is the only good thing about NV.

wouldn't that require a law allowing incest?

haha. Take that Mormons!

2005-10-08 03:11:00 PM
Why's he a dumbass? With the way the Religious Right is getting these days, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried the same thing...

ScienceBoy thats nothing. In Houston beer may not be purchased after midnight on a Sunday, but it may be purchased on Monday.

In other words, he's saying, "Hey, everyone! Make me lose the next election!"

That is the most useless article i have EVAR read in my entire life. I am actually angry.

You don't like prostitution and gambling?

2005-10-08 03:15:56 PM
Personally I think it's retarded that we have laws against polygamy, or any other government laws regarding a religious cerimony like marriage. Christians shouldn't be legislating their religous morality any more than Mormons should.

2005-10-08 03:16:31 PM
So the Mormons are now using their soccer stadium to shoot people in the back of the head
for some imagined religious transgression?

Wow, Utah's gone downhill.

2005-10-08 03:16:50 PM
Uh, Talonpest, Mormons ARE Christians, ASSHAT!

2005-10-08 03:17:33 PM
oren0: You don't like prostitution and gambling?

actually, no, i don't...but i DO prefer them to be legal. Soooo, 3 good things.

2005-10-08 03:17:42 PM
He may be dumbass because he's going to lose the next election... but the guy's right. Except Mormons are even nuttier than the Taliban, in terms of their religion being such an obvious scam and their "prophet" being a scam artist.

Mormons and Scientologists are the dumbest, most gullible people on earth.

2005-10-08 03:17:45 PM
I live in SLC. He has a point.

2005-10-08 03:17:52 PM
in Nevada, you can buy booze 24-7!

The ironic thing is that Nevada was pretty much orignally settled by Mormons. They started Las Vegas. I guess they were the only ones crazy enough (devoted enough?) to live in that godforsaken place before the advent of air conditioning.

2005-10-08 03:18:18 PM
Those crazy Mormons...raising armies and attacking infidels around them just like the Taliban. Err...

2005-10-08 03:18:33 PM
Submitter wildly overstating, at least going by what the article said.
Having been to Utah several times, it is one of the prettiest places in America, and the people are kind and gentle.
As a non religious person I admit to having had prejudices when first going to Utah, but other then hearing Christian music playing in a Publix supermarket that I could have done without,I never had any issues to speak of.

TheRising: That is the most useless article i have EVAR read in my entire life. I am actually angry.

Then you need to make great strides to prioritize your life if that was as useless as you say. Hooray for exponential exaggeration....

I agree with twistedknickers, one cult is the same as another. My aunt's brother was a Mormon, and I went to school with some girl from Utah that was a Mormon.. When my aunt's brother got a divorce from his cheating wife he had to be put on trial in front of the "church", and his family had to testify to his character. That's some very wacky stuff.

Mormons indoctrinate dead people into the Mormon religion without their consent by proxy. That should be enough to tell you what kind of wackjobs the LDS are. Mormons are every bit as misguided and loony as your average Scientologist.

2005-10-08 03:25:53 PM
A lot of the posts here are great examples of why the wacko left is the best election ad for the Republicans.

(and I'm not saying that like it's a good thing)

Polygammy = Taliban? Really?!?!?! Seems like the more consistent liberal view would be polygammy for everyone (not just hetero males).

2005-10-08 03:26:32 PM
TheRising: Uh, Talonpest, Mormons ARE Christians, ASSHAT!

Mormons are Christians in the same way that Christians are Jews. Which is to say, they aren't.
