Well, now, people can't properly remember the birth of Christ without a big green tree! For shame!

The traditions of the yule-log (and log-cakes) and Christmas tree derive from Babylonian worship. Pagans put the dead yule-log ("yule" is the Chaldee or Babylonian word for infant) in the fire on 24th December and "replaced" it with an evergreen tree on 25th December, to symbolized Nimrod (Genesis 10:9, 10) who died and "rose" again in his son Tammus. These evergreen trees were decked with red berries and balls which symbolized their sun-god. Therefore Christmas trees are decorated with colorful balls and bright lights. The star at the top of the tree "christianizes" this pagan practice. "Green trees" (i.e. evergreens) are mentioned in the Bible in connection with idolatry (e.g. 1 Kings 14:23, 2 Kings 16:4, Jeremiah 10:2-5).

Ah yes, typical Republican tactic. Misinterpret a (probably totally valid but anti-corporate) ruling in order to make it look like them damn liberuls are attacking Christmas.

Next up, Mother's Day and the Fourth of July. And let's toss in Apple Pie.

Ain't no way, no how, no when, nowhere in hell I'd believe that any court judgement explicitly stated that the Forest Service could no longer put up the Capitol Christmas Tree. But, falling in lockstep with the Wingnuts, the lawyers are probably mindfarking their clients in order to up their fees and earn a Christmas bonus of their own.

Personally I like the idea of canceling the shameful consumer orgy know as the 'Christmas'. Think of the farking trees at least. Do you really need to kill a hundred year old thing to make jeebus happy?

I'm drunk and ranting....ah ha ha.

Ahh, yes, typical libtard tactic. Impose taxes and kill a baby. Well, at least it got us Christmas!

2005-10-01 06:45:54 AM
Well, at least it got us Christmas! Can't blame that one on the Liberals, cabbyman. We're against capital punishment.

And, likewise, I think that killing trees for a holiday is an abomination...

I just think it's a stupid, sheepish, capitalistic waste of time. Even if you are celebrating a religion, I wasn't aware they had evergreens in the arab desert. Can someone correct me on that?

With some many valid liberal attacks on Christianity and Christmas, it is sad that the federal tree huggers use this obsure ruling to advance an idiological agenda.

With all the scandals involving BushCO (Cheney, Frist, Delay... all the movers and shakers). I guess I am not surprised. Saddened, yes. Surprised? No.

Dogfather: absolutely. I challenge you to defend the insane asylum that is the US's effective abandonment of the concept of "assumption of risk." Overlawyered.com (and pointoflaw.com) are reasonable, rational sites which use, you know, actualy evidence and statistics when making their claims. This takedown of Erin Brockovich is a good read, too.

I've read the ambulance-chasers' defense of the hot coffee lawsuit that's been around the web for years and it didn't convince me the jury hadn't totally lost their minds, so I don't need to go to a site called "overlawyered" to confirm my opinion.

I'd have submitted this as "Environmentalists force Forest Service to hold public hearings on whether to have Christmas this year. Decision expected around Dec. 26."

2005-10-01 08:29:41 AM
As a Chritian conservative, I think cancelling Christmas is a great idea. I grow weary of seeing US stores take down Independence Day decor to put up Christmas crap and the songs get old. However, what frustrates me most is the entitlement attitude of gift giving and receiving. Bah Hum Bug!

2005-10-01 08:30:06 AM
Trees are a pagan thing anyway.

My family fired chrismas when I was in Jr High. Just stopped. It made things MUCH easier, no deadlines, no false "cheer" with people you hate, no timing conflicts (some went to spouses families).

Really, try quitting for a year, its refreshing.

I thought the winter solstice was the reason for the season? Wasn't Jesus born in September betweeen 2 - 7 BC? First day of the Feast of Tabernacles and all that? Quit stealing pagan holidays, you thieves!

Jesus told you to hoist a tree into your living room and then go on a spendy orgy so you can stuff stupid shiat under the tree for thankless relatives to retrieve later? Which book of the Bible is THAT in?

FINALLY!
Gov. standing up against the wacko environmentalist.
Every action that make is generally some hidden agenda based on carrying the 'concept' to some ludicrious end.

Now the Forest Department has taken their approach and used it against them to highlight the assness that is their overly broad legislation they are always trying to get passed.

Well, this time it is turning public opinion against the environmentalist.

Not that I am against CONSERVATION, but I am against the stupidity of 99% of the things that do try and get passed by the extremist groups.

2005-10-01 10:10:44 AM
What's Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in 'em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you? If I could work my will every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!

The problem with bender's link is that it fails to tackle the specifics of her case. If you look at the specifics of her case, and not just a generalized rant about "assumption of risk." "Assumption of risk" would have to have some grounding in reasonable assumptions, McDonalds actions in this specific case weren't reasonable, and McDonalds had been duely warned of this. A reasonable assumption is that coffee will be hot, but not scalding hot.

In other words, don't think of this case as some "undeserving" lady getting $3 million, think of it as McDonalds being made to pay a stupidity tax. Again read the specifics of the case.

2005-10-01 10:44:51 AM
ok, buwolverine: exactly what "specifics of the case" have not been addressed? The Coffee in question was serverd at 180 degrees, which, as it turns out, is perfectly average and actually BELOW the 190 degree average of household coffee. However, this doesnt stop idiotmonkeys from babbling on about how the coffee was supposedly somehow "scaldingly" hotter than usual. So, if the coffee in question was actually at the SAME temperature as most restaurant coffee, and BELOW the temperature of most household coffee, where exactly does the "unreasonable" part come from? Even the National Coffee Association recommends coffee be brewed at "between 195-205 degrees

You do realize that these ceremonies pre-date Jesus, don't you? Going back to basics would mean throwing out your religious trappings in this case, not throwing out the trees and gift-giving.

I agree with you; let's go back to the basics. Let's toss out this "Jesus is the reason for the season" bull and go back to celebrating Yule and Saturnalia.
