"Maybe poor people keep failing society. Maybe that's just a fact."

So when the economy was doing better and unemployment was lower the poor people were just so confused they forgot to be lazy?

I'm not naive either. There will always be some people hoping to run a scam on the government or other chairty as long as possible. But - as far as I know - there's never been a factory shut down in the US due to lack or workers.

Among its findings: 63% of African Americans students, and 68% of Latinos in the class of 2006 have passed both parts of the exam.

By comparison, 89% of Asian students, and 90% of whites, have passed.

Interesting.

VideoVader: Textbook example of brain drain.

Only the influx is dwindling. The UC system report a decline of 20% drop in graduate students in science and engineering over the past 3 years. Most of them foreigners.
Europe apparently offers similar choices, with greater freedom of travel: foreign student and visiting scientist visas have become counter-productively restrictive due to recent BCIS policies. Also, the war on science is not helping much.

Keep in mind, however, that plenty of international students also come to the US for their education: MIT is a prime example.

Less and less. And Americans won't take their place, because for the well-educated in the US, a science career is not a safe and viable option. You have to be very dedicated to be earning around 40K into your mid-30s, with no assured career track on the horizon.

the doubter: You don't seem to understand that it's the CULTURE people can't stand, not the color of the people's skin. Why do liberals always scream "RACIST!" when people point out the honest truth that stupid cultures SUCK?

I'm with you. Don't you just love how we're supposed to sit around in anthropolgy class and say things like "Wow, such and such a culture (which hasn't even smelted steel yet) has a really complex social organixation and language..."

Meanwhile, our culture put people on the moon. Spare.Me.

Yeah, it's not like we need the 6th largest economy in the world or anything. And all those tax dollars the Californians pay for the red states? Well, I guess the supposed small government supporters are going to have to finally put their money where their mouths are and stop sucking at the government teat.

For years, "experts" have always lamented that the SAT is culturally biased, except for the math portion. So how is this exit exam discriminatory then? (Outside of the English, which should be a requirement if you're going to live and work in the US, one would think. If you or I were trying to get a degree in, say, Iran, would they cut you a break because you couldn't speak Farsi?)

I am so sure, what do you know about me? Obviously you cant remember any posts that you have ever typed on.
For one, I am in the military, I am a second class Petty Officer (E-5), just over 2 1/2 years in the military, bc you maybe dont know, 2nd class at 2 1/2 years, is extremely fast in advancement.
I have 2 NECs in the military which, alot of senior chiefs in my field dont have, and have gotten Honor Graduate for both.
I am an Intrusion Detection System analyst and I am getting my bachlors in computer sciences.
Since when do I mooch off the system , you pompous asshole?
I had my two children BY CHOICE, I am married and have a wonderful life. I PAY TAXES, HELLO????? I am in the military, dont qualify for shiat from the state, so you cant really dispute that. HOW ABOUT YOU PAY SOME ATTENTION BEFORE YOU START SPOUTING OFF AT THE MOUTH. Go ahead though, say some stupid shiat that you know nothing about, shows how farking brilliant you are.

I dont think anyone here in california is surprised by this, they didn't have NEARLY enough time to prepare the non english speaking kids for this test and no where near the money to do decent job in what little time they did have. I know a few teachers in LA-Unified who were practically throwing their hands up in the air because they needed to be teaching these kids for this test like FOUR YEARS ago. Subsequent classes are going to do much better, but the kids this year and probably for the next two years are going to basically get hammered because the government put this test in there and then didn't bother to put the resources into the school system to bring everyone up to speed.

However, to be prefectly frank, there is no excuse for the african american kids to be testing below the level of a bunch of kids who probably didn't even start learning english until a few years ago. That's just farking embarassing. After living in Oakland for a few years I am convinced the problem isn't that the schools are understaffed (they are) or that they dont have enough money (they don't) its that NO ONE can make these farking wannabe gangsters actually go to class.

They started cracking down on truancy here in Santa Clara (near San Jose) in the last couple years and surprise, more kids went to class and more kids were passing and graduating.

These kids live in a hip-hop culture fantasy where being "smart" or "going to school" is somehow the same as "being white". Well fark that shiat. White people don't have a monopoly on being educated. A whole bunch of these kids need to be cockpunched until they get the idea.

Mog Roith: The point is, they're not systematically discriminated against any more

True not anymore but as Truman said "Just because someone has sat out the race and you then throw them at the front of it doesn't mean it's now equal." The game has been so rigged against so many minorites that it isn't fair nor has it been fixed to make it fair. Race relations in our country are actually still pretty new and developing. Like I said it was as early as 50 years ago that blacks and other minorities were treated like 2nd class citizens.

2005-10-01 04:27:17 AM
Renowned transvestite sexologist: Our society continues to fail poor people. It's just a fact. It's a fundamental problem of using local taxes to fund schools. Rich towns/neighborhoods can afford to give a decent education, poor ones can't.

The money should be collected by the state, and given to schools on a number of teachers basis with a class size that is dictated (no artificially increasing the number of teachers).

All these testing guidelines do is prove that, yes your are failing your students.

It's pretty much what whydoIlovethevikings and SportingWood stated: it's all about the parents' involvement. I live directly across the street from a public elementary school in Mobile, Alabama. I work two jobs, do web development on the side and my wife works 9 months of the year so we can send our kids to private school. The teachers at both schools are good and care about their students, but at my kids' school, ALL of the parents care about the education their kids are EARNING.

two suspects I agree with most of your statements, but my in-laws (both teachers) moved to Alabama (of all places) from Indiana in part based on the retirement system.

It's not entirely, or even mostly, the kids' fault; it's the parents' fault for not rearing their children to become successful adults.

"Like I said it was as early as 50 years ago that blacks and other minorities were treated like 2nd class citizens."

Yeah! And look at the profound and lasting effects it had on the Japanese, starting with the World War II internment camps! And what about the whole railroad building thing with the Chinese before that!

Oh wait a sec...

JohnnyDanger: Yeah! And look at the profound and lasting effects it had on the Japanese, starting with the World War II internment camps! And what about the whole railroad building thing with the Chinese before that!

Neither the Japanese, nor the Chinese were ever slaves under United States law. The internment of the Japanese was probably a prudent decision at the time, albeit heinous by modern standards. The Chinese railroad builders were compensated, albeit poorly and unfairly, at the time.

Black people were slaves. Owned people. And it was legal under United States law. Ever heard of Dred Scott?

In much more recent history than the Dred Scott decision, Asians were vilified and demonized by the white man. Therefore, the negative effects of such treatment would theoretically be more prominent. They are not.

JohnnyDanger: In much more recent history than the Dred Scott decision, Asians were vilified and demonized by the white man. Therefore, the negative effects of such treatment would theoretically be more prominent. They are not.

Give me some dates, and some legal statutes which specifically descriminated against Asians.

Vilification and demonization still exist. For almost everyone. That has nothing to do with legal policies which distinctly discriminated against the black man until about 1964 or so, or whenever LBJ signed the bill. That made discrimination illegal, but it didn't change the state of things overnight. And, you would have to be an idiot to think it would. There are relatively young black people who are still alive who went through that era. C. Rice, for example.

By comparison, 89% of Asian students, and 90% of whites, have passed.

The report recommended that the state keep the exam in place but consider several alternatives for students who can't pass.

"Clearly, we need to have some options for these students," said Lauress L. Wise, the firm's president, in a telephone interview with reporters.

The state, for example, could allow seniors to submit portfolios of work that demonstrate mastery of English and math, the report's authors suggested.

The report also suggested that schools could allow students to spend an extra year in high school or earn diplomas for completing special summer school programs in lieu of the exam.

Translation of the above from Politican Speak to English: Blacks and Hispanics should not be educated. Insisting they pass this test and take remedial classes to do so will only lead to more educated blacks and hispanics which is bad for us in the white oligarchy.

I can't think of anything more ironic than affirmative action. It aims to help minorities but it ensures that they are not pressured to succeed and if they do succeed their acomplishment is diminished.

Not that surprising, at least 15% of a any given school's population is special ed. and many of those students simply do not have the cognitive ability to pass an 8th grade test.

No man

Your rhetoric is a bit sophomoric.

By your reasoning, an idea or law needs to be written on parchment, needs to then be read and scrutinized by people in the present day, where they are then able to declare themselves 'offended' and 'opressed' at said laws or policies.

Memes are able to travel and propigate unhindered by legal decisions--for good or ill:

The fact remains that in spite of Chinese mistreatment in constructing the railroads at the turn of the last century, demonization of the Japanese during and after WWII, and all the blood spilled during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, Asian people in the US have picked themselves up and slogged onward through history--and triumphed in the US. This, in spite of the fact that they've repeatedly been objects of derision to whites and blacks throughout the last century. The "yellow man" has not had an easy time.

Many blacks to this day have made a career of citing chapter and verse of all the Bad Things© which have happened to their people throughout history, and why special steps always need to be taken by the government and other entities to compensate for them. This idea has been pedaled for decades now. The result is that much of society can't understand why some ethnicities need hand-outs and continue to bleat like goats, while others quietly toil and succeed in spite of it all--knowing that they will be judged by their contribution to society, and the content of their character.

Mog,

Look no further to the other link about what is happening at that Lakota High School (red lake). The dropout rate is so high there that they can't even construct a football team. I read somewhere else that the neighborhood on that reservation has an 80% unemployment rate. They also have gang violence and substance abuse there. How many of those kids do you think could pass a standardized test? They have the worst teachers and absolutely the worst charity health care. I've met racist people from North Dakota who absolutely hate Native Americans because they live close to that reservation. Their hatred mirrors typical suburban disdain for the inner city.

Sure, you're half Native American, but many full blood Native Americans are both uneducated and poor. This trend carries over to Canada and Mexico for them. It's the same cycle that black Americans had to deal with- thanks to colonization. Your family had success due to struggle- so did mine. But that doesn't mean that there isn't a problem. People use the tiny exceptions to ignore the majority. Don't do that.

The Lakota were subject to forced migration (any book will tell you that), so were African Americans. They weren't slaves, but they were forced through those evil "missionary schools", which didn't end until recently (which actually was a lot like slavery and segregation- beaten and forced to do stuff against their will). So between being culturally removed and poor expectations for education they're not doing so well. It parallels what happened to black Americans in this country. I think only intervention can cure their ailments.

2005-10-01 09:19:45 AM
The Teachers Union should admit that is it a huge part of the problem. Illegals are another huge part of the problem.

2005-10-01 09:24:20 AM
Oh- and Asian Americans are actually a moot point. We're getting a lot of immigration from there at the moment and that's the only reason why we're seeing high test scores. Once they've been here for 30-50 years they'll reflect a more accurate test. Sure, there are Chinese Americans who have been here since the gold rush, but there are even more new immigrants here that are overwhelming them. There is some kind of immigrant glow that occurs with original immigrants, first generation immigrants, and second. It takes about 3 generations of time for the stupid to get here. That's actually starting to happen now.

They have a lot of people in their original countries, and only a cross section of the most intelligent of them comes here. Guess what? They're not the only ones who have done this.

African Americans from the Caribbean islands came to America in the 60's and 70's- and they were incredibly brilliant kids. They were the best their countries offered with legendary scores. It wasn't long before there was a xenophobic stereotype about them- that they were going to steal American jobs and control everyone. My mom actually was threatened by a schoolmate because she pronounced a word that sounded "too west Indian." She sounded like "one of those damn west Indians", but in fact, she was part Bajan from her great grandparents who came to America in the 1920's. She wasn't part of the brilliant immigration of the 60's and 70's, but she probably benefited from their fire. Teachers who knew she was part west Indian probably had higher expectations for her- that's what kind of world it was for them.

There was so much discrimination against West Indians because while they looked black, they were getting excellent test and grading scores. They were at the top of the curve. The majority of the ones who came in are doctors, lawyers, engineers, and professors today. But now that immigration from those countries is more common, you're seeing average, borderline, and stupid people from the West Indies. The third generation West Indian kids from those families grew up wealthy, and while they do okay academically- they're not super brilliant like their parents and grandparents were. The stereotype of the brilliant West Indian was reversed.

Asia will have the same, but only after a while. As I said before, it's starting to happen. I've met third generation Asian kids (Korean and Japanese) who are slackers, dropouts, druggies, and have below borderline IQ. But even they will get benefits from their more determined peers because right now it's a trend to believe that "all Asians are smart".

I'm 100% black as I said before, but my culture (black Americans are as culturally varied as white Americans) comes from places in America that are extremely mixed with American Indians. There are a lot of reasons why that happened, and America has a lot of us (Mexico has more; look up "zambo" in wikipedia to find out more about this). Because of the American Indian admixture, I have some crazy Asian genetics playing on my appearance. I basically appear to be close to full blood cherokee, but most people don't understand that native americans can have the same eyes, hair, and skin that the Asians have. I can easily pass for East Indian, Thai, Filipino, Cambodian, and also as a half Japanese Korean without trying. I think my eyes are the big reason people are confused- black people are stereotypically not supposed to have epicanthic folds as prominant as mine.

Because I don't run around with a t shirt proclaiming my ethnicity, I have had teachers just assume that Im Asian, and because of that I've been getting some advantages in certain classes because "Asians are smart." It's all about being in a class when your teacher says "so, you're half Japanese. I think that's just wonderful. Japanese people blah blah" that makes you grind your teeth painfully.

When my mom was in school she got this job really easily that she later found out was because her employer "wanted to give an Asian a chance rather than a black person because she thought that Asians were absolutely wonderful." The jokes on her. She's had other mothers arrange play dates with my siblings because "our people are known for our discipline." HAHA

This "Asian passing" thing didn't start happening until about 15 years ago. Before then, more people were able to see that Im a black person. It's the mass immigration. Wait and you'll really see the truth.

2005-10-01 09:26:20 AM
Well said, Twisted Fark. Honestly, this is a biproduct of the Democratic Party's insistance that people, especially minorities, aren't really responsible for their own actions.

They skip school all day and fail, it's not their fault. It's because of racial in equities or things that happpened over a half of century ago.

You go out partying every night and leave your kid to fend for itself? It's not your fault when the kid ends up in jail. It's societies. By proclaiming to be for minorities, the Democrats are effectively ruining large portions of their society.

2005-10-01 11:32:18 AM
I'm a high school teacher and totally pro-exit exam. I'm tired of watching students who can't perform at an 8th grade level receive the same diploma as a student who spent four years earning AP credits and a 4.0 by hard work and effort. Special ed. students who can't perform for whatever learning disability are given the same diploma although they spent four years having their hand held while doing word searches and reading children's books; when they don't put in any effort, people say it's because of their handicap. Same for language-learning students; because they come from Mexico four years ago and haven't learned the language yet they are given a sympathy diploma. These practices are unfair.

I always look at giving these students diplomas as real world situations. If I were missing a leg but wanted to play in the NFL, should the NFL create special rules so that I won't be discriminated against? No, you either perform or you don't.

These students will still be allowed to go through the graduation ceremony and will receive certificates showing that they completed their course work. They just won't receive a "diploma". This will now separate those that perform and those who are handed things without effort.

2005-10-01 11:42:47 AM
Classic, no suprise though. %30 of DC 6th graders couldn't come up with the Nations Capital, lets throw more money at the problem.

2005-10-01 12:46:38 PM
thank you Lucius_Apuleius

Someone finally gets it. Making standardless, poorly-funded and pseduo-remedial alternatives does not nothing to address the problem directly--no, at all.

/just push 'em through some rusty pipe

2005-10-01 12:47:42 PM
T.Durden: you either perform or you don't.

Well said. It's my understanding also that it's nearly impossible to flunk a student or hold them back in any way because it requires parental approval. Is that true?

2005-10-01 01:23:50 PM
If a long and dramatic history of discrimination, lack of availability, and sub-par instruction was in direct correlation to a group's current performance on standardized tests, then females of all races and social strata should still be underperforming. But that isn't happening.

One might draw a conclusion.

2005-10-01 01:28:53 PM
Hey guys, maybe they can get a pardon from the governor like the 30,000+ students who failed their FCAT in 2002, for the FOURTH time, and got diplomas anyway.

Well, you said it yourself. Asians do better at school, because they are held at a higher standard. And why don't white people get stupid in large numbers? Haven't they been here longer then everyone else? Basically, everyone is roughly the same intelligence. If you held black people at the same standards as everyone else, then maybe they would do better. Or, maybe the situation is more complicated then that. I digress. Perhaps America makes people stupid.

I think that it's time for the "Biatchslap for America" program. Enough of the rap music driven 'gangsta' mentality. Ebonics is not a language. We don't care about your Mexican culture and your "viva la mexico" shirts. No more mooshoo pork. All of you shut the fark up, sit down in school, stop being disrespectful little asshats and do your work. Get an education. Strive for something more than a job at McDonalds just so you can buy your bling bling & 23" spinners.

Maybe we need more military schools. Public schools are turning into a joke thanks to disrespectful punk ass teenagers.

Larjmarj: Auto Paint repair in my own company :)

By The Way, one of the "2 jobs" was Information Technology Specialist for Emory University. You see, Larjmarj, I was VERY heavily into computers and pretty much fix/build any hardware or software you have, also I studied older technology while I had the chance to interact with it in the basements of all the schoo's buildings.

I learned alot from a bunch of old computer gurus that lived in said basements.

Also I'm paying my own way in a techniqule college for learning welding and joining.

After a lot of soul searching I found that mastering computer technology started to get boreing (more of a "job" then a "hobby") I wanted to continue my families long-time obbsession with mechanical devices (grandpaw was mechanic in airforce, Dad is a master mechanic for 40 years, brother is a master mechanic.. blah blah)
I'm a little more "articstic" inclined so I want to learn all there is to know about auto-body fabrication/repair.
I want to become competent enough to start my own fabercation facility to fund my dream of becoming a professional automotive designer/enginneer and build unique custom cars/boats/airplanes/bikes. Basicly anything that moves auto an engine.
Well there you go Larjmarj.

Way to run screaming for the race card when I said nothing about race. Nothing at all. Are you that intellectually bankrupt that the best you can come up with is calling me a racist? I will certainly admit to being a racist, I don't need you to accuse me, but I will not accept the label when it is presented out of ignorance and unwillingness to debate the actual point. Are you poor? The laziness of your response would indicate it.

Or are you so shallow that you couldn't see past the sarcasm if my "racist" statements? Try reading again, look up the phrase "tongue-in-cheek" and then rejoin the debate with more than your "call everyone racist" brain cell firing.
