Someone is so getting laid in that thing.

Using wireless signals to control steering, braking, and acceleration. What could possibly go wrong?

At least now we know where Homer moved to after Springfield.

2005-09-30 02:11:45 PM
So it's like riding the teacup ride when you try to parallel park?

I could see myself going down the road with my friends spining in circles to see who throws up first...

So..okay. The fark? Are people this inept at driving they cannot backup properly?

Wait, sorry. Redundant question.

2005-09-30 02:45:50 PM
I always though that a car with wheels that could all turn 90 degrees at the same time would be much better for parallel parking in the city.

This thing just seems silly.

Glad to crack cocaine has reached the shores of Japan.

It seems impractical, but sounds kind of neat anyway.

A continuing trend: "concept" cars have given up any pretense of looking remotely like something an adult with any self respect would drive in public.

dletter: I always though that a car with wheels that could all turn 90 degrees at the same time would be much better for parallel parking in the city.

Well that would make parallel parking a lot easier and quicker.

Pun intended?

Does this remind anyone else of that Simpsons episode where Homer's brother lets him design a car and the design puts the brother out of business?

Woo! Pivo is "beer" in Czech. Great name for a car. Kind of like Nova.

"wheels and other parts are controlled electronically by wireless signals"

Some hacker with a wireless laptop is going to have a blast Jacking these cars.

2005-09-30 06:03:52 PM
can we say fugly?

2005-09-30 06:04:58 PM
Such moves are possible because Pivo's steering, wheels and other parts are controlled electronically by wireless signals, not mechanical links.

and wireless signals have such a fabulous proven history. glad they're putting them in CARS let alone STEERING and WHEELS, cuz god knows you can operate a vehicle without THOSE

2005-09-30 06:05:45 PM
The thing with this is that it takes a proven system (the reverse gear in a transmission) and replaces it with a complicated turret assembly that's probably going to be prone to failure, given that it introduces more moving parts into the vehicle.

2005-09-30 06:05:57 PM

my thoughts exactly. What could possibly go wrong?

2005-09-30 06:07:23 PM
The Pivo was shown Friday at a Tokyo Nissan showroom and is an experimental model that probably won't go on sale for several years.

Um.. I think it probably won't go on sale *ever*. Apparently, whoever wrote the article is too clueless to understand what a "concept car" is. It's a cool prototype they made to experiment with and showcase some ideas, with no intention of ever mass producing the thing.

2005-09-30 06:07:38 PM
What'd be really fun is not just *one* hacker and *one* car, but a whole group of 'em...imagine watching from 15 floors up the chaos on the street as a phalynx of those cars comes cruising down the streets, passgenger compartments rotating like the beacons on a police car....

/I always used to love playing with radio-controlled cars...

2005-09-30 06:07:48 PM
Another parking idea someone's tried is to have a sort of fifth wheel mounted at a 90 degree angle on the underside the car. It lowers down and rolls the car into place..

2005-09-30 06:07:49 PM
It would be kind of hard to have sex in that thing.

2005-09-30 06:07:53 PM
We will need one of those "Ronco" type things that scramble the egg without breaking the shell (some odd wire type thingy)

Use that on the idiot who buys this atrocity.

They've been controlling planes with the same 'fly-by-wire' technology for over a decade, and it's proven to be FAR more reliable than mechanical systems.

/just saying

2005-09-30 06:08:50 PM
It's actually a really half-assed idea. In the interest of safety, the driver and passengers should be facing away from the direction of travel (the way troops sit in military aircraft.)

So a better design would have the cabin facing in the wrong direction with a TV screen to indicate what was ahead on the car.

2005-09-30 06:08:55 PM
I, for one, welcome our new egg-car overlords =)

2005-09-30 06:09:03 PM
Yeah, sure, that'll sell... where do I buy stock?

I'd take up hacking just for the pranking ability.

I'll take it!

2005-09-30 06:10:22 PM
I didn't know there was a market for not having to back up.

2005-09-30 06:10:58 PM
and the perception of the safety rating of a car based on the egg would be?

2005-09-30 06:11:03 PM
Wireless control of car parts scares me. There are many times when I'm asking a computer to do something and it finds excuses not to do it, and I think about if it was controlling my car's brakes.

2005-09-30 06:11:34 PM
"wheels and other parts are controlled electronically by wireless signals"
I can see it now: 'How to hack your neighbors car'
oh, and thats a cool car BTW.
