Should have prosecuted parents.

You gotta sweat the little bastards for a while first --- make them stay awake at night thinking about some serious pound-me-in-the-ass time in the big house --- before you hand them down the correct sentence. I bet he doesn't kill another relative any time soon.

You obviously don't have a nine year old child.

Why were their parents letting them drive go-karts in the street in the first place?

Maybe they tore-up the carpet in the living room.

You don't think this 9-year-old is already going to be up many sleepless nights for the remainder of his life with that one fateful day playing in his head on infinite loop?

Get off my lawn !!!!

Whamdangler: You obviously don't have a nine year old child.

No, 22 and 18.

szmike: You don't think this 9-year-old is already going to...

I was kidding.

How the hell could the judge have ordered jail time for a 9-year-old in the first place? That's the scary part.

Texas judges sentence retarded teenagers to death all the time. The kid's lucky he's not on death row.

This sends a bad message. The law applies to everyone. If it had been me, I'd have sent him to juvie hall for three years to teach him a lesson.

Meanwhile, an 11-year old boy in England gets points and a year's ban for not killing anyone in "his" BMW (link).

Ooo, I bet that scares him.

eddyatwork: If it had been me, I'd have sent him to juvie hall for three years to teach him a lesson.

Seriously? I know a lot of people who went to juvie and came back different people --- smoking pot and cigarettes, etc. --- and most of them wound up back in prison many times.

Is it possible to allow for accidents to happen with kids and not hold them to the same standards we have for adults? At 9, he probably understood there were risks, but probably couldn't really grasp just how big the risks were and the resultant impact on all involved. This is really sad for the whole family.

I am anything but a bleeding heart, but I don't know that juvie detention would really help anything in this case.

2005-09-30 09:15:32 AM
I'm of the opinion that if all of the parents involved KNEW their kids were riding in the street and allowed it, they should be facing endangerment and negligence charges.

2005-09-30 11:03:48 AM
So, if had stopped at the stop sign, everything would be cool?

2005-09-30 12:16:49 PM
"He didn't stop -- he kept going," the 15-year-old said. "I looked back, and he was going too fast. I already knew they wasn't going to make it."

Did YOU stop?! I doubt it. He was just following you. Do you think vehicles don't exist because you're on a go-kart?

He's blowing through stop signs and is probably going to get a driver's license next year. His parents should think twice about letting him get his license on this 16th birthday.

/here come the flames from 16-year-olds

2005-09-30 03:05:08 PM
This kid shouldn't have seen the inside of the courtroom, in my opinion.

The kid was doing what any 9 year old does: stupid shiat.

The only difference in this situation and all the other situations where 9 year olds do stupid, dangerous shiat is that somebody got hurt.

For the prosecutor to even take it as far as he took it reeks of a total lack of common sense and judgement. The only saving grace is that he did eventually drop the charges.

And, no, I don't blame the parents in this. As a parent, you need to let your kids get hurt and do dumb shiat. It's the best way for them to learn what and what not to do. 99% of the time, they come out of it with a few cuts, bruises, and the occasional broken bone.

2005-09-30 03:35:16 PM
I promise it will never happen again... I won't kill my 11 year old cousin a second time.

2005-09-30 03:40:47 PM
it seems that killing his eleven year old cousin is prolly punishment enough.

can you imagine that? the ride to the hospital where he's asking if his cousin's going to be alright? when they take his cousin off of life support? there's a kid who's going to need therapy.

2005-09-30 03:41:19 PM
The judge must have figured out that the kid was white and didn't need to go to jail.

"eddyatwork-

I disagree with you on a major point. While, yes the law applies to everyone, I don't believe in mandatory across the board penalties.
Instead, I want Judges to reclaim the ability to..well, JUDGE.
Looking at this story, I don't believe any more penalty is necessary. This family has been hurt enough. The parents don't even want to go further with it, instead rallying around the kid.

/The parents were negligent though for allowing children to ride go-carts in traffic.

2005-09-30 03:47:11 PM
Its called Man-Slaughter.
Kids a juvenile.

The kid should be sentenced to what other juveniles 9-15 were sentenced to that commited the same crime.

See all done.

2005-09-30 03:48:16 PM
eddyatwork:If it had been me, I'd have sent him to juvie hall for three years to teach him a lesson.

Um..yeah, because sending a child to a place, during his most impressionable time, where he can learn every bad habit needed to be a solid criminal and loser, is a really good idea.

Marcus Aurelius [TotalFark]

All the time? Hyperbole much? A convicted rapist and murderer is a criminal regardless of how stupid they are. Christ, most of this country is pretty close to legally retarded anyway.

Boy, 9, instead fined $42 for running stop sign in accident that killed 11-year-old cousin

$42 !!!!

they should just lock the kid up for life, not like he's gonna turn out to be anything worthwhile.

bluprint: People like you make this world worse. For everyone. Kids, adults with kids, adults w/o kids.

what? Those of us that believe parents should be responsible for their kids and be held accountable when their little crotch goblin gets someone killed?

I think a lot of people are missing the real question here. A 15 year old driving a go-kart is one thing. A NINE year old driving ANYTHING around in the street besides a bicycle is asking for someone to get seriously injured. What kind of parent lets their nine year old drive, what's basically a car without airbags, seatbelts (in most cases), and the protection of an outer shell, around in the street? I knew a couple kids when I was younger who had go-karts but their parents had enough sense to make them and their passengers wear helmets, which would have probably saved the kid's life in this case. It's just common sense.

Overprotective much? You probably think there is a problem with selling condoms to 9 year olds too. Sheesh, some people.

2005-09-30 04:01:42 PM

I'm sorry, but I must jump on the blame the parents bandwagon, at least if they knew the kids were driving on the streets.

Go-karts are not street legal for a reason. I want to biatchslap every moron who gets their kid a go-kart or pocket bike and then lets them ride it on the streets with no safty gear.

you should have gone for it. you could have put them to work farming power crystals, holding onto them for safe keeping, and then when they reached level twenty, boot them out the portal.
hahaha.. suckers.

I'm glad that nobody is getting prosecuted for this. It's about time that we realize that when something goes horribly wrong we don't always have to punish people for it.

2005-09-30 04:25:11 PM
I have almost run over these same type of moron kids in my neighborhood. Any parent that allows a kid to drive ANYTHING motorized on the street (especially unsupervised)should be punched in the neck. And a stupid helmet isn't gonna do any good when the rest of the kid is squashed flat.

Wait until you see a dead kid wearing a helmet, and maybe you'll get it then.

On the other hand, knock yourselves out morons. It never hurts to thin the herd every once in a while.

this is an accident? so the go-carts were LEGALLY driving down the street?

one question, WHO BOUGHT THE 9-YEAR-OLD THE STREET-ILLEGAL GO-CART IN THE FIRST PLACE? DID THEY BUY IT TO DRIVE AROUND IN ONLY THE DRIVEWAY? I DOUBT IT.

what sucks is the kid that died should've been the one driving, and not the friend. the driver's parents derseve this more then the friend's parents.

the parents negligence in allowing their child to operate an illegal vehicle on public streets led to the death of the passenger...negligent homicide.

2005-09-30 04:42:53 PM
Kids do stupid thing because theyre kids, undeveloped brains and all. Its the responsibility of parents to make sure those stupid things dont kill or seriously hurt anyone, and also to teach their kids to not do such acts.

Overprotective? Theyre driving go-karts in the street and not paying to road signs or traffic. Somewhere along the line the parents failed to do their job.

2005-09-30 04:43:37 PM
The parents should sue that danged stop sign company. No way could someone in a go cart see that little sign all the way up top that post.

"I'm glad that nobody is getting prosecuted for this. It's about time that we realize that when something goes horribly wrong we don't always have to punish people for it."

Sometimes things go horribly wrong because some people are total asshats. They should be punished. I'm jumping on the "where the hell were the parents in all this mess" bandwagon.

I don't uhh...I mean I can't ummm...what?

Instead of pointing and laughing why don't you explain just what's so farking funny? The parent aren't responsible for the actions of their child? Is that what you're trying to say?

until the day that little crotch goblin is 18 he is the responsibility of his parents therefore they are accountable for all his actions.
