Apparently it sent me back in time as well....re-ith Peat-ith

I know it's standard procedure to rip on satire, but I actually like satire articles. That, however, was awful.

I over easied my eggs, now they make themselves. I'm pissed, I lost a perfectly good Fabreware Hotskillet™ to hunger and efficiency.

right..but overclocking is?

...rift creates lapse in time continuum which causes article to be posted in three points in time. We are now at the second point. Who knows when we will see this article for the third time.

Overclocking = Manually making your processor run faster than it's designated for. In a nutshell.

Ok so the date at the top said May 28th now either this is really old or we are getting a glimpse into the future

This is one of the funniest satire stories I've ever read...

2002-04-29 01:47:26 PM
I, for one, can never get enough of these HILARIOUS jabs at overclocking processors.

Someone please post another satirical gem like this one.

Yawn.

Do folks overclock just for the hell of it? I mean, just to see if they can? I'm serious....I've been in the computer biz for 12 yrs now and I don't have a clue why people do this. Not a big deal (obviously) just wondering.

2002-04-29 01:51:17 PM
Deathtoll....I'm still f'ing crying on that one!

Posting hat-trick for me! Yay!

BitPlayer, I know one guy who's done it like four times and it always ends badly. But he subscribes to the, well I wouldn't learn if I didn't tinker theory. He now works for IT in some government tank plant....guess it pays to take chances I guess.

It altered the fabric of space-time such that it got posted to Fark in the future... unfortunately, by that time, 1.6GHz was common, not unheard of.<br>
MAY 2000 FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!

2002-04-29 02:10:53 PM
Bitplayer you do it just to see if you can. At no small expense sometimes.

While we are on the trend of silly catch phrases:

Find these men, Smithers. I want to make them my executive vice presidents.

2002-04-29 02:13:33 PM
on a totall technical issue. I read when the pentium pro came out, it added a second processor on the chip that was supposed to execute "expected" instructions. Or more accurately, pre-fetch instructions and execute those. When the program sent those instructions, the main processor already had the work done and therefore no extra processing was required...

Does this constitute a rift in the S-T cont.?

In related news, Farkers cry out in dissapointment upon learning that overclocking a CPU does not equal faster pr0n downloads.

2002-04-29 02:32:42 PM
I linked this in the comments to the article about the guy overclocking something to 4Ghz, since it seemed relevant. I didn't submit it as a link because it's rather old! Someone must have seen my link and was amused.

(sorry I'm late. Was in class) Stupid repeat crap. And I posted a great link to some classic arcade games you can play online for free... Oh well.

Bitplayer:
It's not so strange. The idea behind overclocking is very common in almost any hobby. With overclocking, geeks select each part of their computer and tune them to their operational limit in order to get the best performance possible. Motorheads tune and customize their cars/bikes to get the best possible performance from their investment. Anyone seriously envolved in a sport that uses equipment (tennis, golf, skiing, cycling, archery, etc.) will over time buy newer and better equipment if it can help them perform better.

Oh yeah, this article is really old.

2002-04-29 03:26:22 PM
In this case Repeat = Still funny.
BBSpot rulz.

2002-04-29 03:33:25 PM
To elaborate on what GRIMLOCK said, the so-called "overclocking" in other venues from computing often result in new inventions and products that become standard to the sport/pastime simply because they do the job better. The only downside is that failure in overclocking computers can be painfully expensive if certain parts melt down or short out due to improper grounding or cooling. Cyclists don't need to worry about this :). On the other hand, you can't greatly increase the performance of a bicycle with a No. 2 Pencil like you can with certain Athlon processors :).

2002-04-29 04:23:19 PM
*Stunned* - What the...?

2002-04-29 04:23:34 PM
A rift in the space-time continuum that sent the article to Fark on two separate occasions, separated by many months. In this case, the repeat is nobody's fault but the overclocker's.

You know I follow the system tweaking, precise configuration and that sort of thing. I understand testing to failure and performance issues in cars, planes, boats, etc. What I don't understand is overclocking a 750Mz cpu to 1.6 Gz. I guess I'm wondering why not just get a 1.6Gz cpu? Gotta cost less than the damage. Otherwise it appears to be one of those things that you never know how far you can go until you've gone too far. If that floats your boat, that's cool. I guess I've just never been able to buy into running nitro in my vette just to see what happens. Maybe it's that computers have been my business and never my hobby. Now ducted fan ultralights.....hummmm.

right..but overclocking is?

increasing the clock speed of your proccessor, and/or changing the FSB mutliplier.

2002-04-30 03:05:18 PM
first time i've heard this news (really)- how was it possible to create this rift in s-t with, when you think about it, just a bit of electricity in metal?
