"When I came off that list, it was like a miracle had happened, and the relief I can't begin to describe to you. It did help my faith," McPhee said. "Those nine months were the closest thing to hell I hope I will ever experience."

I guess when you've been a nun your whole life, anything "helps your faith".

What I got from it was... Karl Rove is more powerful than God.

... she's a frequent flying nun

2005-09-27 11:13:45 AM
She waited 9 months to do something constructive about it?

Hell, leave one message. If they don't call back within the week, go down to your local federal courthouse, drop the $100 or so, and file a case against the TSA requesting entry of an order striking your name from the list, as well as any costs you incurred in connection with their mistake.

The AUSA who gets assigned the case will realize what's going on, make one phone call and the problem will disappear -- because he knows that if he doesn't, the judge is going to have a field day.

She tries bringin' that ruler on the plane one more time, and she's right back on there, I tell you what.

Brother Archie McPhee mistook me for a punching nun-doll. My colon still aches.

"When I came off that list, it was like a miracle had happened, and the relief I can't begin to describe to you. It did help my faith," McPhee said. "Those nine months were the closest thing to hell I hope I will ever experience."

Still, McPhee believes that if she didn't have political connections, her name would still be on the list.

Not much of a miracle then.

/Look! I found a penny! It's a miracle!

clearly someone has unresolved issues from their Catholic School daze...

2005-09-27 03:53:42 PM
I'd have thought all the Fark Catholic bashers would be calling for her to be sent to Gitmo.

2005-09-27 03:54:02 PM
Well, all the airports can't be wrong.

I say we strip her naked, make her bark and use her plane tickets for musket wadding.

/ Nun searching can be habit forming.

Those TSA people give me the cold shivers.

One time three of them said I couldn't carry on my Toshiba laptop because of a security notice. They carried on like this for 5 minutes. Turned out they were joking. I was not amused.

Driving in New Jersey had me already stressed out before I ever got to the airport.

I say we drink the sacramental wine, eat the communion wafers, and use the no-fly list as musket wadding.

/Communion wafers make a fine meal.

So, does Sister McPhee wear a habit? If so, she looks like one of those moozlim ayrab terrist women in a burkha to the TSA.

She's on a mission from God.

"I said something to the effect that 'If this were Northern Ireland, I would understand,'" McPhee said. "And the police officer said, 'Ma'am, I'll pretend I didn't hear that, or otherwise I would have to arrest you.' After that, I didn't say anything."

What exactly is illegal about making political references?

Sister McPhee was being stopped because the list said that an Afghani man was using the last name McPhee as an alias. The list had no first name for him, and the intensive checks would continue until she cleared her name with the ombudsman at the Transportation Security Administration, according to this family connection.

And:

TSA called McPhee in 2005 after receiving a letter from the Conference of Bishops via the White House, and placed her name on the cleared list this summer.

Why is the last name "McPhee" on the list with no other details and why was the Sister placed on a white, list, why wasn't the name removed? Where are my tax dollars going?

"When I came off that list, it was like a miracle had happened, and the relief I can't begin to describe to you. It did help my faith," McPhee said. "Those nine months were the closest thing to hell I hope I will ever experience."

interesting, either hell seems to have gotten a lot more lenient since i last passed by, or being put in the TSA no fly list IS hell.

Sister Glenn Anne McPhee...

Now HERE is a shining example of where people should be screaming about the right to free speech being violated. So many times there's an incident where a school or employer or other non-governmental entity dictates what can and can't be worn / said on their property, and morons start incorrectly whining about freedom of speech.

She admits that once while undergoing screening, she made a "smart remark" to an officer.

"I said something to the effect that 'If this were Northern Ireland, I would understand,'" McPhee said. "And the police officer said, 'Ma'am, I'll pretend I didn't hear that, or otherwise I would have to arrest you.' After that, I didn't say anything."

That gives me the cold chills and warm fuzzies at the same time. Seems there are some good officers left, even if the laws are insane.

2005-09-27 04:13:57 PM
"I got to the point I could hardly go to the airport, because I couldn't anticipate what would happen and I couldn't do anything," she said in an interview with Wired News. "I missed key addresses I was to give. I finally got to the point where I always checked my bag, because after I got through the police clearance, then they would put me through special security where they wand you from head to foot all over. They would dump out everything in your bag, then roll it into a ball and hand it back to you."

Well, at least she got stuff back. People have said when they are on "the list", they have their stuff confiscated as part of an "investigation" (obviously never seeing their stuff again).

Perhaps being a nun has it's perks... besides for the no sex stuff.

2005-09-27 04:14:44 PM
"Those nine months were the closest thing to hell I hope I will ever experience."

So hell has gone from an eternity of torture to a few detainings at an airport? Did Satan retire or something?

No, it's illegal to say that you don't have a bomb, and the screener is an idiot for thinkg you would. You see, in airport security-speak, "I don't have a bomb" means the same as "I have a bomb." This is because our airport security strategy is based around having the security personnel act as stupid as possible, thus reassuring us. "Look, Mildred! They have Cooter working security! Everything must be just peachy."
This is also why TSA will randomly pull Grandma Smith out of the line, aggressively frisk her, and then debate arresting her because she has a darning needle, even while smilingly passing through Achmed the Perpetually Scowling Arab with only a cursory scan. See, that's something only terminally stupid people would do, so we must be safe!

Gotta be careful who you pal around with...

I don't think anyone would complain if they searched people based on nation of origin. If Scowling Arab grew up in Iraq, by all means search him. On the other hand, if Scowling Arab was born and raised in Canada, then it's racism.

Jesus, this is really horrifying. As someone who is not a citizen, every time I come to this country, it is always an ass-clenching ride of fear. Lucky her, at least she is an American citizen, a nun, old, and white.

Pity the poor, unfortunate young non-white male/female who has the last name Hussein (not at all uncommon). You know their s#1t is getting confiscated at the least, Gitmo more likely.

I wouldn't be surprised if the officer simply had no idea what she was talking about.. I've never gotten the impression of 'overqualified' or 'well read' from the TSA people I've interacted with.

Wouldn't terrorists have fake id, thus not flying under their name. I was shocked to fine my 2 year old son's name is on the list. Every time we fly, multiple security officers come out to check him out and verify the fact that he's a baby. For now, it's kind of funny, but probably won't be when he's older.

2005-09-27 04:54:58 PM
I bet if she started cracking jaws with a bible down at TSA this shiat wouldn't happen.
