911 operators have to ask you for your address/where you're at, even if you have GPS, for confirmation.

At first, I was annoyed because the article sorely lacks details. But even with those, it would have amounted to sad and useless information. But because of the reporter's angle I learned that when slashed or otherwise in danger, reach for a land line. That extra minute of response time could save a life.

Yes, all new cell phones are required to have GPS in them, however, not all 911 centers are able to afford the new technology to decode this information yet. In Michigan, at least, not all police departments are required to accept 911 calls. So you could be in the middle of a large city, call 911 and be transferred to the COUNTY dispatch of the county in which the tower receiving your cell signal is located. Often times the county sherrifs don't patrol in the city limits so they then have to transfer your call and may have to transfer it more than once until they get the right city/township.

Also, the GPS units in the phones update VERY slowly and are usually accurate (per the cell companies) to within 30 meters. So you end up with pretty inaccurate location information.

This morning, I got the sound of kids beating on the door of my shop, and yelling that one of the trailers was on fire.
(I do maintenance on 24 units in a trailer park).
Jammed my shoes on, dashed over there, and ascertained that the guy living there (was the trailer I used to live in) was outside and okay. Smoke detector woke him up. Grabbed the garden hose from 4W's yard, and started soaking. An inferno, by now. I realized that the trailer was a goner, and turned the water on his S10 low rider pickup, hoping to save that. I did.
I remember someone in the crowd yelling at me to get the hell away from the trailer, it could explode. My response was: "Fine, let it. My Sunday's already wrecked".
Then I heard the sirens, and when the trucks rolled in I got the hell outta the way.

I hate it when days go like that.
Nerves still all a-janglin.

Trailer's gone, truck's okay. Donated my espresso machine, my blender (never used em) and some clothes to the victim. Others chipped in cookware and dishes.

Dunno what happened. But he's alive and okay, and the rest can be dealt with and addressed.

Hope you never have an emergency where you need to dial 911, but if you do, remember to give as much info as possible. As Alex Chilton pointed out, some of the people working on the other end are not the most highly educated as the job usually entails crappy hours, low pay, and minimal staffing.

Phones do not use GPS. That requires a fairly expensive and bulky chipset...

Most companies are going with a variation of Uplink Time Difference of Arrival which uses a triangulation of wireless signals being sent fromy our phone to towers.

Actually, TraumaDex is a clotting powder, not an anticlotting powder as said in the article. An anticlotting powder might have kept him from getting a heart attack, but he'd have bled out.

Not true. Verizon, Sprint, and Nextel phones all have GPS built in. Cingular does not, but instead relies on triangulation to find about where the handset is in the case of E911. I guess it's good enough for the feds....
