This thing looks like a 70's disaster flick, waiting to happen.

2005-09-25 05:55:48 AM
They already built a non floating one in the sea off the coast of Japan. And thats sinking.

2005-09-25 09:14:36 AM
I'll buy but only if it's off the coast of New Orleans.

RagingLeonard: I'll buy but only if it's off the coast of New Orleans.

Oh... and only if you replace 'airport' with 'low income housing.'

/ticket please

If they put it eleven miles out they can add gambling and hookers.

/or just put it in New Orleans

no, but close. assuming you're referring to 'international water' boundaries, it is 12 nautical miles, or about 13.8 statute miles

but i like your way of thinking

I think they are doing this just to kowtow to the ever increasing power of the mermaid lobbyists.

They don't need an airport! Who would wanna go to San Diego, anyway?

Hmm. So you have the main airport for families and kids to be 'sheltered'. And you have the floating one for business men and Larry Flynt.

It's simple ideas like this that keep the world spinning. I'm surprised Donald Trump didn't think of this.

By the way, this thing looks kinda like it's something you'd find in Sim City 3000...

The one off Japan ("Kansai", or something) is on an artificial island, not floating. They designed a lot of tolerance for the ground settling into it, but it's sinking faster and deeper than they planned. Actually, if this one starts gradually sinking, just put some more buoyant shiat under it. But you can't stop the ground in the island under it from compressing.

My husband suggests that they cut a deal with the Navy and make a switch. Move the Naval air base to Lindberg field and the commercial airport out to the airbase; then there would be enough space.

//hated flight in and out of SD; thought it was just too close to the residential area for my comfort

2005-09-25 03:34:40 PM
Good idea....those pilots are getting too good at landings, anyway.

2005-09-25 03:35:03 PM
Discovery channel did something on one of these in Japan.

They don't need an airport? Yeah right. That airport has only 1 runway for passenger traffic. When it closes, it farks the whole area. They had a small commuter plane that broke its nose landing gear the other day a la jet blue, and that closed the airport for a few hours.

Oh and who wouldn't want to go to San Diego? I grew up and still live in Orange County, of the TV and movie fame, and must say that the 2 hour drive to San Diego is worth it because the weather is always better and the people aren't nearly as superficial. 10 times better than Orange County, if I didn't have my business here I would definitely move to San Diego.

Aircraft carrier for civilian aviation...

Maybe they ought to just wait and build it off of the coast of Nevada or Arizona. The doomsayers are always saying California is going to fall off anyway so what good is an airport that far out at sea?

/doesn't give a rats backside one way or the other

2005-09-25 03:37:41 PM
tough to get a taxi home from the airport...

How about Hong Kong airport? That is built in large part on reclaimed land that was once sea

Nah, they'll just be water taxis.

2005-09-25 03:43:58 PM
How deep is the water? I wonder if this thing would be able to withstand the uber-tsunami that TV tells me I'm supposed to be afraid of...

That's actually a good idea on paper, but Coronado residents wouldn't have it. The property values are pretty high there, and that plan would certainly cause them to stop rising, if not drop. I also think traffic would become a major problem since there's no real way to expand the one-way streets coming and going from the base, nor the bridge.

I want to know what retard decided to put an airport right in downtown San Diego. The air traffic noise makes some parts of the city totally unlivable (Ocean Beach, for instance).

Geico Caveman:

Here's an idea: Since the Supreme Court recently ruled that public use is anything a local goverment says it is, whatever local government has the authority should declare Coronado Island blighted (move em all up to La Jolla or somewhere comparable), cut the deal with the Navy and just put the airport there.

//being sarcastic...know it would happen because money talks
///also thinks SoCal property values are overinflated, bubble is going to burst sometime.

just a plan to make getting to the airport harder.
guess i need a better list of excuses as to why i cant pick up friends at the airport

BRAC should have closed Miramar, and this wouldn't have been an issue. Miramar should be turned over to the airport authority and the marines should go somewhere cheaper.

errrr...wouldn't happen....sheesh, should not post and watch football at the same time

The airport got put there because we had a bunch of people who wanted to build aircraft there and, surprise, they needed an airfield to fly their products away. Plus, Point Loma and Ocean Beach were the hinterlands when Lindberg got built. Very few people were living there. Plus, the prop planes that preceded jet aircraft were quite a bit quieter, so it wasn't a problem. Nobody just decided to plop an airport in the middle of a bustling city; it was a much smaller place back then. The San Diego phone book in the '50s, yellow pages and all, was the size of a trade paperback book.

A floating airport is a hurricane magnet which will attract some of the hurricanes away from the Gulf.

Good idea.

Who wants to take a boat shuttle to catch a flight? How would you pick up your relatives at the airport? Just an opportunity to scam people into paying twice.

Whatever the merits of this idea, the San Diego City Council, an organization of highbinders, imbeciles, and incompetents, would manage to either triple the cost, squander the funds, run it aground, give the job to their ne'er-do-well brothers-in-law, or all of the above. Between indictments.

Well duh, that's because they bought a non-floating airport. If they wanted one that doesn't sink, they should have paid a little more $$$ and bought the floating airport.

/silly people

Isn't that kind of the point? When Californa sinks beneath the waves, they can haul anchor and move in towards Tuscon Bay. Then, once the great yellowstone volcano blows and takes out the midwest, they can moor off of Kansas City Atoll.

This is true forward thinking, people--they're getting ready for 'Waterworld' in a big way.

The Pacific doesn't get hurricanes.

It gets typhoons

Will they rent it out as a party barge?

Can you say colonoscopy? I knew you could.

Wow, I have actually never met people as superficial, shallow and greedy as in San Diego. Then again, I have only passed through OC.

Yeah that makes a whole lotta farking sense. The City of San Diego is farking bankrupt, the pension system is a disaster, and everyone they elect Mayor ends up going to the hole for bribes and embezzlement.

Yeah, this is just what San Diego needs.

I've been to that Japanese airport. I didn't know that's where we were landing because my ticket said Osaka, but I recognized it from the air right away from the Discovery Channel show. It's pretty impressive even with the settling problem.
