From this page

"The NHC suggests on their latest discussion that Rita could be a category five hurricane already. They are awaiting a recon plane to get in to the area to find out for sure. The Hurricane Hunters had problems with their aircraft last night and so there has not been any new recon data from Rita in quite some time."

I have a bad feeling about this.

Thunder Bay is a bay on lake Huron, not the ocean. Given the lack of fault lines and the small amount of water, I don't think you can have a tsunami in the great lakes.

Which makes me lucky too.

RabidDog: We have guns and the death penalty.

Now you have the Hurricane penalty too.

Lord of Allusions:

With 2 large hurricanes targeting large oil ports, is Mother Nature trying to exact her revenge?

Yes I believe she is spanking a certain someones wee wee for going back on a campaign promise. Something about alternative fuel...ack what do I know?

Civil_War2_Time

See ya on the road man. Good luck.

I'm leaving, even though I've never had to evacuate before. But, I've never been through a cat5 and don't plan on sticking around. I feel for the people who stay.

I have to say, I drove through Pennsylvania last summer, and it is a beautiful state. I had no idea!

Clearly you didn't meet any of the yahoos that live there :)

/a state founded by Quakers, what could possibly go wrong?

I honestly think that Rita will be, at her peak, stronger than Katrina. I think she may be quite a bit stronger. She's going through an explosive deepening phase right now (there is lightning in the eyewall) and she is already a strong Cat 4. And she hasn't even hit the warmest sea surface temps yet.

Hard to believe we're probably going to get a cane under 900mb -- that's insane. But, well, this year hasn't exactly been a paragon of sanity.

Did we ever find out what happened to that guy?

OK - what's the parade cam now?

Holy shiat that is unreal. What a goddamn pressure drop! Its raining like hell in Orlando btw. Has been on and off since last night.

Hey hurricane budette. At least we have nothin to worry about this time around, although my place was on the Northern tip of the TS warning area (Zzzzz).

Good luck to Texas folks.....you're gonna need a lot of it.

I'd like to enlist fark's help in convincing my grandparents, who live in Houston, to evacuate. If they do not, then I will be forced by my own will to stay with them.

Feel free to address my grandparents in this thread, and please, keep it clean.

smeegle: So which God do we give the BJ to to make it stop?

Um , that would be Oshun and She is not interested in a BJ. In any event I think it is too late for anything like that. She has clearly taken matters into Her own hands.

MackyWood:

ive got to take the farkin bumper off my truck and let the air outta my tires just to get it in the damn garage

Gotta take the wing mirrors of mine, and even then it's a tight squeeze. I only drive a truck coz it was so dangerous driving a sports car around here, no one can see you. Plus the fact I totalled my sports car. Driving a Titan now. It's like a bus.

"Low-lying escape routes are cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Major damage to lower floors of all structures located less than 15 ft above sea level and within 500 yards of the shoreline."

If any New Orleans refuge in Texas just wants to get away from stormy weather, just bring yourself to Berkeley. I have an empty rental unit being rennovated that you can just move into now.

I'm not guaranteeing that we won't get the Big One while you are hear. The universe can have a sick sense of humor.

it's a long travel though. nice and sunny today.

Come to Milwaukee.

It's rained like 3 or 4 times all summer.

2005-09-21 03:02:20 PM
Oh, this is going to be a buttload of fun.

First reporter that asks me "Aren't you glad this didn't hit New Orleans?" is getting a bullet between the eyes.

2005-09-21 03:02:20 PM
you have insurance?

Nope, it's uninsurable because of it's age and location. It's a small 3 bdrm trailer, tied down.

It's ok..it only costs me $500. The stuff in it is old furniture, tv, telephone, n such not really a big deal

Meh.

We're likely to have trouble when the anus hits our oil.

Veratyr: Feel free to address my grandparents in this thread

Dear Granpa and Grandma,
Please evacuate so that thousands of Farkers don't have to sit around and worry about you. How are we going to get any work done if we have to keep checking here for updates every five minutes?

Perhaps now is a good time for my Gulf Coast brethren to consider moving to wonderful state of Pennsylvania. No hurricanes, no earthquakes, and no monster tornados. Plenty of open land with places to hunt and fish.

We have a home (that survived the 1900 hurricane) on Galveston Island. We boarded up everything, took the dog and left on the Midnight Ferry last night because we did not want to get caught up in the evacuation mess today and tomorrow.

Problem is there are only two ways off Galveston: Bolivar Island Ferry (holds about 70 vehicles max runs every half hour) and then up Bolivar Peninsula Rte. 87 (one lane highway) or taking I-45 up to Houston where you can connect with lots of major highways.

Problem is last night authorities said: Once you get on the evacuation routes today the authorities will not let you off and you have to go to Huntsville (where the prison is no thanks), College Station, or Lufkin - and get into the shelters provided.

We are safe (we think( in our old family homestead in Northeast Texas

Good luck to you and yours as well. I'm on the phone constantly telling everyone that's being hard headed...Cat3. Oh, now 4. Hmm, now a Cat5. Ears are starting to prop up, thankfully.

Is it too early to start blaming my political enemies for the ensuing disaster?

Miss Surreal: Good luck and safe driving to anyone else evacuating!

I'm in Austin if you need a place to stay. Looks like a cat1 for us. Not pleasant but not bad.

Finding a hotel in texas to evacuate to is becoming a problem...

Either its filled up with Katrina evacuees or filled up with evacuees from this hurricane.

I mean come on Texas is huge, and not one hotel is available?

Gah.

Veratyr: two ideas--ask them if they want to meet your kids, and show them these thousand words:

That appears to be San Jacinto in the background. I tried a "flying geezers" GIS, but to no avail.

Last night I was perusing WorldNetDaily for a little bit of humor, and found that they're shilling a new book which claims that God sends hurricanes to the U.S. each time our government acts in a way contrary to the wishes of the extreme right wing in Israel. Apparently, this notion makes sense to some people (who don't have the time to stop and ask themselves what poor black folks in New Orleans have to do with our foreign policy.)

I'd provide some linky goodness, but I'm at work right now and am not sure that I'd like for a hate site to show up in the Web access logs.
