FlatEarthSociety: i have decided that you have pretty good taste. good for you.

you should check out Gatsby's American Dream. it takes a little getting used to, and is kinda pretentious, but it's pretty killer stuff.

you *just* figured that out? I must be losing my edge! ;D

pretentiousness matters little, as long as the "suck" is dialed all the way down.

kombat: My favorite album is Bricolage. However both of those came out before 2000, so they wouldn't fit on the list. I figured Amon Tobin deserves some representation on the list.

Amon's work on Chaos Theory, the game, is very very good. They also have a DVD-Audio disc out with that work on it. I haven't got it yet but I plan to very soon.

Yeast Infection

maybe i'm still a young sprout, but it seems the older you get the less you give a damn about that crap, and pay more attention to what you like, (im 20) and i've noticed I stopped giving a shiat what *people* think and rock whatever I want to rock. maybe it's a right of passage now-a-days for kids to listen to "teh Emo's".

Pfft, PTF2012 all the way. 8)~

FUBuddy: didn't know that, thanks, i've only listened to Demon Days and hadn't really followed them, just like that album, don't really know much about them

2005-09-18 02:26:04 AM
FUBuddy: The Gorillaz are technically branded to Damon, the lead singer of Blur. He owns the bands names, rights, etc. He just brings in producers and additional guests for the records.

...which is precisely why the Gorillaz will implode by their 4th album. Damon is way too much of a prick to own taht much of something without things going to crap. Both of the Gorillaz albums are good, but the first one was better, and to me, far more "complete" as a true compilation of talents.

After looking through my music collection I've come to what I would pick as my favorite cd from 2000 - 2004, only recommended for metal-heads

Thor's Hammer - Three Weeds From The Same Root (2003)

2005-09-18 02:27:34 AM
As always, a 'Best Music' list without the Mekons can be dismissed out of hand.

/and by the way, Radiohead sucks
//bigtime

meh.

Seems like the post from yesterday about the 20 worst ideas from hollywood. I'd say opinions are like asssholes but that would be insulting assholes sometimes.

/Like this time.

Pearl Jam is my favorite band, their last album did suck balls, but I love all the ones before that: ten, vs, vitalogy, no code, yield, lost dogs

all great

riot act - not so much

2005-09-18 02:28:38 AM
Kid A sucked massive balls

i'm a little worried about how the new Thrice will be from the two tracks i've heard, what do you think so far?

oh, and i didn't like "War All the Time", but probably cause i was desperatley hoping for 'Paris in Flames' part 2.

CanadianCommie

it seems a little, um... light in the loafers from time to time, but is techinally amazing and has some crazy math-y grooves and a unique subject matter.

2005-09-18 02:29:23 AM
Yeah, late to the thread, I don't care. One thought and I'm off to bed:

Common Rider - This is Unity Music (2002)

Jesse Michaels of Operation Ivy fame puts out a *fantastic* punk/ska record. It's a good thing I was reading Nothing Nice to Say a few years back or I never would've heard about this band, but they were incredible while they lasted.

CanadianCommie: ...which is precisely why the Gorillaz will implode by their 4th album.

Nah because the band is basically just him. He was prick in Blur because he had to deal with so many other people. Ever record he starts with a clean slate and can do whatever he wants instead of trying to listen to other bandmates like in Blur. I liked the first album better also but I respect him for creating different sounds for each one by adding different producers and guests. I really respect Dan the Automator and he was producer of the first one and gave it more of a indie hip hop rock feel compared to Danger Mouse who made this latest one which had more of a mainstream feel. I still think the whole idea and concept behind the Gorillaz is pretty awesome.

2005-09-18 02:29:49 AM
the village people should release a new album, that would rock

2005-09-18 02:29:49 AM
Normally, I'd complain that this link is over six months old...

...but since it shows how much suck Pitchfork is, carry on.

Good taste, man. My favorite track off that album is The Lighthouse, which I believe has its own 12" out as well. I'll look into that DVD-A release, I'd like to pick it up as well.

New Thrice sound promising. Check out their website they have a few clips of the new material. It is a throw back to their older cds which had longer sounds and more harmonies/melodies. I'm looking forward to it.

2005-09-18 02:32:27 AM
FlatEarthSociety: if you have an open mind, and a love for anything 'punk', Dillinger Four will kick the everloving shiat out of you, and you'll farking love it.

fark yeah! I've seen them live twice (native Minnesotan :) ) and they hauled ass both times. Hi-Pro Glo is one of the greatest real punk songs to be recorded "since" punks death (which I put somewhere around 1990 :) ).

2005-09-18 02:32:56 AM
Every Jandek record.

the concept is absolutely fantastic, because it gives the "band", for a lack of a better description, a lot of flexibility to experiment, and it really pays off. But, I just hope that Gorillaz doesn't get dragged down because of some dispute in the future. If Damon can play nice the Gorillaz will have a lot of future success (as long as they keep things fresh with every new CD).

I used to put "god WEEN satan" on constant roation. If that isn't the absolute weirdest album of all time, then I don't want to know what is. I'm sure anything within the realm of normalcy will rub me the right way.

The only good thing about this thread is that it has given me many ideas for what to listen to for expansion of my music collection.

It helps to talk about one thing you like, instead of all of the things you hate so much. Helping others expand their horizons is a good thing.

But then again, this is FARK.

2005-09-18 02:35:28 AM
There are like three cd's on that list that are any good.

Hipsters, pfft. Whoever can listen to the most horrible, obscure music without their ears bleeding is the coolest. I'll pass

Despite all the naysayers, I'm getting lots of ideas for stuff to download and check out from the article and this thread. The 'net, music festivals, and word-of-mouth are really the only ways I know to discover good new music anymore, since the stuff on radio, tv, etc. is almost guaranteed to blow these days. Anyway, keep bringing on the suggestions.

I couldn't agree more about Wilco, Old Crow Medicine Show, Flogging Molly, Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, and several others that have been mentioned. I also really like the Calexico / Iron & Wine compilation. Just snagged it the other day. Jacob Fred Jazz Oddysey, The Gourds, and Split Lip Rayfield are some others that I'm surprised not to see listed.

2005-09-18 02:38:10 AM
well, because i own 90% of those albums [missy elliot??] i now consider myself even more deck and hip than i previously praised.. myself.. as.

I get laid way more than you.

What's the alternative? Throwing your hands up in the air and saying with absolute certainty, "All music today sucks," like my 56-year-old parents are wont to do?

what kind of stuff do you mostly listen to? maybe the people in this thread can point you in a few directions.

pawn

i've never had the pleasure of seeing them, as they rarely come to NYC, though i'm trying to get down to The Fest 4 in November.

is a masterpiece... much like all their work.

FUBuddy

my favorite is "Illusion of Saftey" so if it's like that, i'll be a happy man. the 3 new songs they played at Warped sounded promising.

you can legally download music at archive.org
all the artists have given permission to have their music posted on the site

all live shows tho

One thing I've learned about these types of lists. If your bands are on it you love it. If your band is'nt on it you hate it.

Best to avoid these types of lists and Just liston to whatever the hell you want.

(not saying how many of the albums on the list I own or what Albums I don't agree with. Cause in my opinion this list needs some shaking up to mactch my tastes)

2005-09-18 02:42:01 AM
I guess most of you hate me, I own 87 of all these albums

2005-09-18 02:42:46 AM
all i gripe about is the lack of love for the mars volta and RZA, while praising ghostface.
And where is the Handsome Boy Modelling School?
and to those bashing hipster music:
Your just livid because you can no longer afford to listen to/ steal good music, so you biatch at us for listening to it. Go play your creedance 8 track one more time and tell me how i have no range
[listens to blus oyster cult CD]

Yeah D.F. are fine, but the other Dillinger band - Dillinger Escape Plan - now THERE'S a band to see live.

I don't hate you, just pity you.

I still tend to lean towards the "pretentious asshat" designation for the "If you've not listened to most of these, you're being commercially spoonfed" crowd.

Especially considering my favorite albums since 2000 have been Warriors of the World by Manowar, A Very Scary Solstice by the HP Lovecraft Historical Society, the soundtrack to Chicago, and Once More with Feeling from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I'd consider that, if not eclectic, at least rather geeky. I'm all for being introduced to new things, but if someone does it by saying "This is better than what you listen to, so go get it"...it just makes one want to cram a 45 of Take on Me up their arse.

#96 - The Decemberists "Castaways and Cutouts" - downloaded it, deleted it. That album is totally ridiculous. It was kind of like pirate emo...ludicrous!

Castaways is one of my favourite albums ever. By far. You, sir... are foolish.

you like any canadian indie stuff, The Weakerthans, Propagandhi, etc?

and i love Ween, i also love Mr. Bungle, so that tells you something.

FlatEarthSociety

Totally agree. I left that at my parents house when I wandered off to school, and only have 'This shiat is Genius' with me right now. Both are excellent, though I'm missing 'Versus God'... been about a couple years since I last heard it :(

Markoff_Cheney: And where is the Handsome Boy Modelling School?

I forgot about their last album. It is extremely solid, my favorite song on their is "Class System."

2005-09-18 02:46:17 AM
Haha!!!

So many people posting in this thread exposed themselves as wanting to think they're cool, and being pissed at this arbitrary list because they think the people who made the list think they're cooler than the they are.

Hahahahaha!!!

Why would you get pissed off at a list like this? Because you're an insecure little loser!!!

Grow the f*ck up!

DEP i HAVE seen live, and it was mind-blowing. i had always heard good stuff, but i didn't think they could actually play that stuff live, especially the druming and lead guitar, but HOLY shiat!, how do they do that??? AND they jump around the whole time. amazing.

i think "Irony is a Dead Scene" is their best work. Mike Patton can do no wrong.

Propaghandi is alright, The Weakertahns are on my radar, but other music gets thrown at me and I keep getting distracted, and on a limited budget I have to prioritize my music pruchases. damn you 6,000 dollar school bill!

but, I do plan on expanding in to the more political-canadian indie music.

2005-09-18 02:48:06 AM
white people. classic.
i love music, i love all of it, from classical to 80s butt rock to merl haggard box sets.
Its all about enjoying what you listen to, not telling other people how much they suck for listening to their music.
unless their music is Pop.
Then, they can die...
exception: 80s pop.
future exception: 90s/ 2000s pop.
you know, when its comin back.

2005-09-18 02:48:34 AM
donald pleasance fetishist: Every Jandek record.

Well, that would fill up half the slots on the list...

Kinda surpised me to see the NYT reviewing his concert the other day. One: to see the NYT mentioning Jandek. Two: that Jandek was playing a concert. I mean, WTF???

2005-09-18 02:49:31 AM
Oh, crap, here comes the "pop" debate.
Lemme just get it out right now: my favorite band is XTC. Anyone who thinks pop sucks has a too-narrow vision of what "pop" is.
