Flying kamimaze corpse eating alligators and cholera bearing canines of mass destruction and some idiot wants uss to think Dick Clark's office loosing power and causing Christina Aguelera's makeup to sag is scary.

I didn't work today but I was talking to all my friends who were, and none of the big studios lots (CBS Radford, Universal, WB) lost power, so if this was a terrorist attack it did a shiatty job of making any sort of dent.

Although I suspect most of them run off of generators in the event of a power failure.

Where I am (eastern edge of Hollywood) the power was restored in about three minutes. News sources are now reporting that the outage was caused by a Dept. of Water & Power employee who inadvertently cut a main power line, triggering a shutdown cascade.

Its got to be a farkup. I mean, aren't they working on big parts of the grid down here in the south now? Cletus thinks the red wire is for New Orleans and the yellow wire is for 'the West' without checking the Big Book of Electricity?

See you stupid ass libs always get that wrong. Bush has nothing against black people. He hates poor people, yes many black folks are poor and them he does hate but it has nothing to do with the color of their skin. Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan are always welcome in the Bush home. Why? They have lots of money.

the Los Angeles Police Department went on "full tactical alert," meaning no officers were allowed to leave duty.

Wow. What a concept. Too bad that didnt happen in New Orleans. Probably would have kept the looting down.

I wonder if it was like that time I was using electric hedge trimmers, and got a bit carried away, slicing through the extension cord. I bet the employee who "accidentally" cut the line was trimming a hedge...

The new story is that it wasn't a line being cut...it was workers who connected the wrong cables.

2005-09-12 06:12:33 PM
From Latimes.com:
A wide-ranging power outage, set off when a cable was accidentally cut, darkened large sections of downtown Los Angeles and many parts of the San Fernando Valley shortly after noon today, authorities said.

Lee Sapaden, a spokesman for the county's Office of Emergency Management, said the massive power failure was caused after an employee "inadvertently cut a power cable" at a DWP substation in West L.A.

Losing power anywhere in California is so much 'Dog bites Man.'

In fact anything absolutely stupid and absurd is quite commonplace there.

Too many people trying to charge the batteries on their hybrid cars while at work = grid overload !

Some businesses, in addition to the power they already use, are probably furnishing power outlets in parking lots to these politically correct employees.

how is the power going out in a city news?

you mean there are still people who ask this question in Far threads?

Read the site slogan.

Besides our media reports when Paris Hilton's dog goes missing on slow news days, a major power outage surely deserves a little ink/bandwidth

2005-09-12 06:14:50 PM
I missed the whole thing... I went to the gym at like 12:40ish and came back at 2:00. When I got back all of my clocks were blinking... I didn't know it was such a big deal until I checked Fark and saw the headline, and then my relatives in NEW HAMPSHIRE called to ask if we had power. I still don't get what the big deal is. Can someone fill me in? Why is it news that we had a quick power outage? My clocks were blinking 12:30, so the power couldn't have been off for more than 40 minutes...

johnnypotpie : how is the power going out in a city news?

Because it came a day after the Gadahn tape came out. People jumped to conclusions, although initially in London, they thought it was a simple power failure too

I'm in Sherman Oaks in an office building across the street from the Sherman Oaks Galleria. We lost power for about an hour.

Everybody felt especially uneasy because there were quite a few ambulances and fire trucks going in ALL directions during this period.

After checking the radio and hearing nothing of substance, my office mates and I assumed (probably correctly) that these trucks and ambulances were headed to folks who were trapped in elevators.

All is well now... but the date and proximity to yesterday's Al Queso Queda message made us think.

We were eating lunch in Burbank at the Daily Grill when the lights went out. Everyone looked around for a sec and then went right back to eating. Kind of like a movie. I am an Edison customer, so I don't think we lost power. I wil have to ask the wife. She is a teacher so she should be home by now.
