Sloth_DC: Facist? Uh, no, I don't think any of them had face-fetishes. Nor is anyone on my list fascist. Why would you say that?

Pournelle is a fascist. I know him. Nice guy, but a fascist politically. Neither Niven nor Heinlein are fascists, but they are conservative, in the pre-Bush sense.

I've always felt that the reason the government prevents the public from seeing flag-draped coffins returning from Irag was to lessen the public criticism of the goverment's actions.

Preventing news of NOLA seems to be the same logic.

The only problem is that it works.

I stand corrected. I know about Pournelle, and guess I met Niven on a "bad" night.

What choice do we have, but to keep pulling up the facts and holding it to their faces?

Give up and go home?

Well, Gaiman's a scientologist, which technically classifies him as a "screwball".

A lot of the old-school sci-fi writers strike me that way. Heinlein in particular, but he's far from the only one.

I would like to say to all the anti-Libertarians that Libertarianisam does not have to be all or nothing. I for one would be happy for any move toward more freedom and less government. Remember, politicians are whores and will go with what ever will get them elected. Make your preferences known and the sluts will follow. Protest votes for Libertarians are not wasted.

Noam Chimpsky: If you see a crazy guy with a gun and call 911 and the guy opens fire a few minutes later killing some people, you can biatch at the police all you want for not getting there in time to stop the gunman but if you try to say that the police are just as guilty for the shootings, you would be just as twisted as if you blamed the company that made the gun that the gunman used in the shooting.

What if the crazy guy's been calling everyone in the country for days before he shows up, saying "I'm a gonna kill me some Saints fans," takes his time setting up a .50 in the Superdome , runs off a belt for practice, and then waits for the Dome to fill up before he offs a couple thousand. Would you blame the police for anything then?

The Court sure wouldn't - they've held that government has no duty to protect the citizenry.

Exactly.

Just like not all Republicans are for corporate welfare and not all Democrats are for medical insurance for everyone.

Just more libertarian tendencies in government would do some good.

It's okay with me if the locals swing for their screwups, as long as Fearless Leader and his incompetent cronies swing too. You okay with that?

That would be like saying we shouldn't punish al qaeda unless we give Bush the same punishment because he read a book about a pet goat to some school children. Typical of Democrats to believe that kind of shiat though.

Seriously, dude, what the hell is your problem? You're like the magic rant-ball - shake ya up, and get a random angry response. Nagin and Blanco hold the primary responsibility for losing their shiat so quickly and spectacularly, but only a complete chimp would be able to so steadfastly and illogicially spew off just because someone suggests that maybe Bush holds some responsibility for putting complete farking incompetents into FEMA and DHS. He does. They farked up, and someone should have expected them to fark up, considering that they are utterly and completely unqualified for their jobs. At this point, you're being as obtuse and annoying as the hacks who try to pretend that Nagin and Blanco hold no responsibility for screwing up.

No, it's more like you saying that you are a complete and utter moran. What the hell are you talking about? Your brain is so wired into the spin that you can't even think straight anymore. What ever perception the Democrats hysterically try to create about Bush, Halliburton, God, FEMA, oil companies, etc. is as irrelevant to the need to severely punish the criminally corrupt LA politicians as the presence of an incompetent clown like Richard Clarke in Bush's administration was irrelevant regarding the need to destroy al qaeda after 9/11.

The way Democrats try to deflect blame away from some of the worst criminals in US history such as the LA Democrat politicians and al qaeda terrorists, is pathetic.

Just for the record, Nagin's a Republican. He ran on a Democratic ticket so he could win the mayorship, but he's a life-long Republican, and he does Republican-like things, like cleaning out the corrupt Democratic politics in Nawlins, endorsing Blanco's Republican opponent, etc. And, yes, he's culpable as hell for not implementing the *known* problems with the city's emergency planning. They had a dry run just last year, and identified all of the problems that cropped up this time - they were real good at identifying the problems, just not so much good at fixing them.

Noam, I went and had a nice leisurely dinner with friends and checked back and you're still at it. You're making even less sense than when I first voiced my initial concern. This can't be good for you. Please take a break for a bit and let your mind rest. Your thoughts will become clearer, I promise, just give the medication some time. It will work.

You are so right, there is no hope, the Libertarians will never amount to anything. Personal responabltiy will never happen, our servants will screw us blind, we will all grind to death in the system. Sleep, sleep, be happy in slavery. It will all be OK.

The only Libertarians I have ever actually respected are those who have run for local office. At least they are trying to make a real difference -- which is greatly needed in this country, as we can see from what has happened in New Orleans. Competent local people of whatever political stripe are needed, not time-serving party hacks.

Other than those few, Libertarians are a joke, and anyone who votes for their candidate for president and thinks he/she is "striking at the root of evil" is a deluded tool. You are only opting out of the political process: you cannot make a difference, ever, by voting for some fringe weirdo for president. You CAN make a difference by voting as many fringe weirdoes as you can into LOCAL office. That is where ALL "third parties" should be concentrating their efforts. Show you can actually function at the local level, and maybe you will win some respect.

and you replied,

Tell that to Heinlein, Pournelle, Niven, or, hell, just about any decent sci-fi writer. Oddly, the really smart creative people tend to be (politically) conservative ;)

Bwahahahahahahahahaha. That's a really funny one, that is. Some day, just for fun, you should check out the blacklists of the fifties, and see how many really smart creative people made the commie list. On the off chance that you are serious, send me a list of any hundred "really smart creative people," preferably alive, who are conservative, and given me a few days to match you at least five to one for those who are not. Unless you think there are no really smart creative people in Hollywood, Broadway, literature, poetry, television, fashion, etc.

What ever perception the Democrats hysterically try to create about Bush, Halliburton, God, FEMA, oil companies, etc.ad nauseum, ad infinitum...

Democrats created the "hysterical perceptions" of these things, out of whole cloth?

Bush invaded Iraq and got involved in whatever the hell you call the Terry Schiavo thing. Those are the two things that Republicans I personally know have problems with. I don't see Ted Kennedy's hand in either of those issues.

Halliburton simply "lost" 9 billion dollars of cash and that's not hysterical? I doubt many Democrats got a cut of it.

God? The guy who drowns tens of thousands of children because he's in a snit? Who sets his own kid up at the hands of his most evil invention? It's all in His book.

FEMA is no laughingstock, I give you that. Mike Brown is the laughingstock. Amateur Night at the Cat5 Lounge should not be enough to give one some serious pause as to who exactly is safeguarding this country?

Oil Companies. I like Citgo myself.

Got this in the mail today, and even I am shocked by the cover of this week's Economist. "We" farked this up, as a whole, so fark yeah we blame the Captain of the squad.

DGAR

So how do you feel about the ability of them being able to film everything going on in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries where our military are being blown up, shot, maimed, or whatever else is happening, but you're having a problem with them showing what's going on in New Orleans?

I wasn't real excited to see when my cousin was laid up in a hospital with half his face looking like a pound of ground round, but hey, they showed it.

You need to wake up. The reason the gov't. doesn't want what's happening in New Orleans on video is because they aren't doing a GAWD DAMN THING. If the video cameras are there, then they'd have to start doing something. I for one say put the cameramen on every street corner. It can't be any more dangerous than having them in the fields in Iraq...

If you don't want to say what kind of government you would I like, that's just fine with me. I'm just responding to what I saw as an attack on Libertarianism which is an ideal I believe in. To me it means individual responsibility and a recognition of Common law Rights. Of course you can keep your own beliefs to yourself, that's your right.
