A friend is Alaskan, from one of the islands way out on the Aleutian chain, and she brought some seal to us once. She cooked it in a giant pot and it stank up the whole house. All salty and shiat. Smelled like the sea itself was in the kitchen.

I felt bad eating the little guy, but I did. She saved the heart for me. I felt pretty bad eating that, but I did.

So now his spirit in is me and I acquired all of his seal-y power.

Are baby walruses as cute as baby seals?

What do they do with the walruses once they're dead, or is this just a sheer blood sport based on a time-tested tradition in the region?

Oh! Oh! Me! Me! Me! I want to watch!

Not really. But if they were doves flying into fans I'd be there. Now that's entertainment!

My guess would be they eat the meat and use the fur and tusks for clothing and other tools.

From TFA:

The meat is a core food source for Alaska Natives in the area, including the coastal Yupik and Inupiaq communities. Walrus ivory and bone are transformed into crafts and artwork. The skins become boat coverings, while intestines can serve as rain gear.

Stop. Now. These people have a god-given right to conjecture and prejudice. Just stop with your "reason", lest you be a victim of....the....um....silent treatment!!

A vacationing penguin is driving through Arizona when he notices that the oil-pressure light is on. He gets out to look and sees oil dripping out of the motor. He drives to the nearest town and stops at the first gas station.

After dropping the car off, the penguin goes for a walk around town. He sees an ice-cream shop and, being a penguin in Arizona, decides that something cold would really hit the spot. He gets a big bowl of vanilla ice cream and sits down to eat. Having no hands, he makes a real mess trying to eat with his little flippers.

After finishing his ice cream, he goes back to the gas station and asks the mechanic if he's found the problem. The mechanic looks up and says, "It looks like you blew a seal."

"No, no," the penguin replies, "It's just ice cream."

I'm an Alaskan, and I've eaten whale, seal, walrus, and lots of other critters.

The meat is pretty tasty, if a bit on the fishy side. I don't care for the muktuk, though. Never eat the liver of any marine mammal.

Salmon skins work for this also.

Does anyone actually think that Native Alaskans still use walrus-skinned boats or traditional raingear? Every picture I've seen of Bristol Bay shows a bunch of aluminum craft and Gortex.

For that matter, most of their food comes in a can via government handouts and checks from their local Native corporation.

Sea mammals in general taste like ass. They have this horrific Iron taste and the meat is such a dark color (I suppose from all the hemoglobin they need for diving).

The baby seals shudder when you drop them, live, into the boiling water. You know they're done when the fur floats to the top. Then on to the hot barbeque for a half-hour, drizzled with baby Walrus butter, and enjoy.

Did I mention they already have stuffing in them?

Yes, but of course, although you have to clarify the butter first.

And did you know that baby seal, whale, and walrus makes your dogs coat shiny? And no hormones, like that nasty Mad Cow Steak you're feeding the poor thing.

I have good news for you:

"U.S. Sausage Company to Make Canned Walrus Meat in Russia"

Maybe they'll have it in Wal-Mart. Oh, right, that's China.

2005-09-08 01:27:24 AM
I wonder why they feel the need to hide this? Perhaps the same reason you can't visit factory farms or slaughterhouses. Or the same reason we can't see photos of flag draped coffins.

totalsecurity: And did you know that baby seal, whale, and walrus makes your dogs coat shiny?

Besides, everybody knows that the younger the animal was when it was killed, the tastier the flesh. Baby lamb, veal, etcetera.

Leaders do not want viewers to see the animals shot and butchered during a fall subsistence hunt, fearing widespread Internet images could threaten the tradition.

Two thoughts come to mind here:

1. Just how "traditional" is it to shoot a walrus? Shouldn't they have to like, I dunno, sneak up on them with a stone axe or something?

2. If these guys are hungry and desparate enough to hunt walruses for subsistence, why would they care whether or not it's Webcast?

That is the funniest headline I've ever seen.
