But the FEMA t-shirt makers should be working three shifts! Oh, right, they're all in the P.R.C..

Yeah? Someone's gotta rebuild that shiat, right?

AntiNerd

I don't see this as "Obvious." There is a lot of rebuilding to do, and that means jobs.

IF of course you have a strong Federal government willing to do "wealth redistribution" to create the building contracts. But instead we have the White House is nothing more than the business development arm of Halliburton and KBR.

So if hurricanes destroying cities boosts employment, maybe you think OBL was just trying to get the US out of recession on 9/11?

2005-09-07 01:06:53 PM
The sad political side of this Hurricane is despite the continuous, loud screaming that Bush was at fault by the left, only 13% of Americans blame him, exactly the number of folks that have been screaming the loudest. Oh well, the left has, once again, failed gin up hatred of Bush. I bet at night, Karl Rove thanks God that he has the easiest job on the planet.

Hello, Mr. Obvious? Long time listener, first time caller.

Hurricane Katrina to increase joblessness? Funny, I never made the connection.

Mr. Obvious, you're a life saver.

Gosh, and just as Bush had this whole economy turned around and skyrocketing towards farking fairyland.

She took er jaaabs!

2005-09-07 01:19:56 PM
Yeah. The economy is going to suck in the next 6-12 months. And inflation is going to take its toll. And oil prices. And mismanagement from the top down.

At least we still have Greenspan.

2005-09-07 01:21:17 PM
If you hire an illegal alien, you are a criminal and should be treated as such.

I see soybomb is making up pretend statistics and fallacious inferences from his made-up information.

Captain Obvious does his job so well, I think it may be time for a promotion

Damn. You would think that that guy's teflon would have worn off by now.

That statistic came from CNN.com. However, soy_bomb probably got it off of Matt Drudge's site for those who want to be George Bush's Monica Lewinsky.

Of the top three appointed FEMA officials how many had previous disaster recovery experience? Or any experience with remediation, at all, ever?

After you change the subject, yell, or whine... then and only then, can you go bite a yak.

Bohemian:

So this influx of jobless means we don't need:
Illegal aliens as we now have people willing to do those jobs.

ha ha ha ha!!!! illegal aliens never stole a job from an american willing to do that job. yes. we have people, but if they were willing to do construction work would they still be unemployed after five years of the biggest housing boom in the history of the country? if they were willing to work construction, what the hell have they been waiting for?

2005-09-07 01:25:53 PM
Today's excuse by Bush for the aftermath disaster:

Blame the local and state govt. its ALL their fault.
(I'm not saying they don't share blame)

Bets on tomorrow's excuse?
Iraq is on a "new reason" schedule of about every quarter.
Katrina is on a "new excuse" schedule of about daily.

It's like being in the fruit of the month club...

2005-09-07 01:26:19 PM
greenspan is due to retire. he's been lucky so far.
congress is due to approve an additional 40 billion in aid. if you think the looting of a few plasma tv's was something to behold---just wait.
unfortunately, this next spate of looting will not be reported in the us media. and if and when it finally is, the chant of "we will not play the blame game" will resound.
i'm thinking more like 1/4 trillion will be more like the final figure. and all of it pissed away.

2005-09-07 01:26:52 PM
Yes, those million folks who are displaced and have no home or job will just sit on street corners and do nothing.

And I do wish the American Apparel girl would start taking it off.

/sitting on a street corner, doing nothing.

actually hurricanes have very little impact on employment numbers and gdp historically. perhaps katrina might be different but we will have to wait and see

2005-09-07 01:28:58 PM
actually, i think this whole catastrophe will INCREASE jobs - there is a lot of rebuilding work to be done folks.

the CBO gave a "ballmark estimate" that gas prices would spike by an average of 40 percent this month

Forgive me, but WTF is a ballmark estimate?

2005-09-07 01:32:09 PM
To be fair, you can't blame Bush for the hurricane. Appointing incompetents to positions that actually have responsibility, now we can blame him for that. I mean, Michael Brown's qualifications to head FEMA are: He used to run horse shows.

2005-09-07 01:32:19 PM
and here I had Prime Rib and Alaskan crab legs on the beach in San Diego over the weekend....

should I feel guilty ?

Not only was there a problem with the appointments, but the White House reaction to this problem was indefensible.

If you aren't responsible for promoting the general welfare and providing for the common good of 250 million American people, I think we'll let you off.

2005-09-07 01:38:38 PM
"the White House reaction to this problem was indefensible."

Don't tell Rove. He's making ready a p.r. blitz to Swiftboat tropical storms even as we speak.

2005-09-07 01:39:45 PM
i suspect that a lot of the business population will simply not return to nawlins. they know that the govt will not change. you can survive bad conditions thrown at you by mother nature---hurricanes, earthquakes and etc. it's almost an impossibility when the govt is corrupt.
the projects and low income housing will get rebuilt. and, that's what you will have---the garden district alongside the lower 9th ward. the middle class---and it never was much to begin with---will be in houston or baton rouge.
halliburton is going to be much much richer, biatch.

Feldspar Q. Walrustitty:

Yes, those million folks who are displaced and have no home or job will just sit on street corners and do nothing.

well, today we gave every man woman and child who didn't have a job before the hurricane hit, $2k just for asking. of course, the money that will be thrown at them will be stunning. this will set one of the all time bad prececents and once again the socialist wing will convince the least educated that life is just a series of problems to be solved by government. the more you sit, the more they give. ain't this just a great country?

As much as I disdain his political beliefs, I think that Rove is a farking genious. Damn is that man devious and underhanded.

soy_bomb: despite the continuous, loud screaming that Bush was at fault

There is a vast difference between fault and responsibility.

Nobody is saying the hurricane is Bush's fault.
People are saying it is his responsibility to lead the country in the wake of a national disaster.

Ya know. It explains a lot about the last 5 years that Bush supporters can't tell the difference between fault and responsibility.

You see in a responsible culture where people care for themselves and others they take responsibility for their lives and their fellow creatures. EVEN though the problems they are dealing with are not their fault. Even though there may be no one to blaim.

2005-09-07 01:45:34 PM
Hey Bohemian, what's the source for your post:
Today's excuse by Bush for the aftermath disaster: Blame the local and state govt. its ALL their fault.

What I found from Knight-Ridder's Washington Bureau: "In Washington, President Bush acknowledged the withering criticism of his administration's Weeners to Hurricane Katrina, said he would lead an investigation into the failures and vowed to build on the progress that emerged in recent days." I watched the Q&A from today's Cabinet meeting. He didn't place blame on anybody, fed, state or local.

2005-09-07 01:45:50 PM
"that's because illegal mexicans are actually willing to work. its amazing what people will do when sitting on their asses waiting for the givernment to hand them money doesn't work."

You kidding me? How cheap you think the illegals will want to work for if they WEREN'T illeagal and had to pay the same taxes legal citizens have to pay?
Yes, we want more money than illegals for a job. We pocket less after Uncle Sam gets his cut.

2005-09-07 01:46:06 PM
ummm duh?

BTW... who's using my name without proper trademark authorization hmmmm??!

yep, its right up there with smoking weed as major crimes go.

nerfball: Never is a big word there buddy. But honestly you are right they compete just like everyone else does, though I'm sure there are a few cases of illigal aliens getting their buddies jobs when legal workers would have done.

Can you imagine what a farking standstill the economy would come to if everybody stopped smoking weed and/or hiring illegal aliens?

Yeah, I'm sure that is going to be a fair and even-handed investigation.

as an aside on govt giveaways: here in pugetopolis, we have a food chain---winco foods, it's sort of like sams club or costco. no frills, warehouse pricing. when i go there, i see quite a number of people with 2, yes 2 shopping carts with what can only be described as haystacks of food piled in them. they invariably pay with a quest card---which is the successor to foodstamps!!! most of the recipients of this largesse are mexican.
yeah, i'm a racist.
perhaps, i'm mistaken, but shouldn't we take care of our own first. nawlins is a pos town, but it's ours. and for the most part, these are us citizens. when you think about it, a lot of the blacks were here before a lot of white ancestors.

2005-09-07 01:50:07 PM
Yes but if you get caught with weed or a few rocks of crack you might just get a good old fashion beat down from the COPS.

Ah! I see you and your family decided to high tail it to Florida afterall. Glad you were all safe.. I certainly hope that your home is allright.

As for that Farker, I recall seeing posts by him afterwards, so I think he was okay. (There was also debate as to whether or not he was faking it.)

2005-09-07 01:54:49 PM
The hurricane will increase joblessness everywhere but where it needs to happen - Brown and Chertoff will still have their jobs, and maybe even some sort of promotion, assuming this administration stays true to form in regards to minions who screw the pooch.

2005-09-07 01:55:50 PM
If you hire an illegal alien, you are a criminal and should be treated as such.

I do know here in Houston that all employers wanting hire help at wages that would assist somebody to get back somewhat on his/her/their feet should be stopping by the Reliant Complex, and ignoring the street corners for some time to come. Illegals would then have to resort to measures that would either bring in better schwag, or they would move away from here/get deported.

why the hell would i want to imagine THAT? i'd have to get off my lazy stoned ass and mow my own lawn. eeeek!

And that is a sign of incompetent management. That kind of behavior sickens me.
