The alcohol laws really threw me for a loop when we moved to PA.

I'd routinely go to "spirits" stores looking for beer and not find any. Finally someone told me that they can't sell liquor and beer together. Then I'd go to the Beer Warehouse and they'd only let me buy by the case. Then the convenience store will only let me buy two six packs. It took a couple of years to figure out.

Beer is pretty expensive here, too. A six pack of Beck's Dark I bought this afternoon was $9.75.

SilentStrider:

See, I actually agree with the State Store concept. Helps keep kids from trying to buy it.

I don't. After having lived in NY for 4 years, it's very convenient to be able to run down to the supermarket last minute to buy wine to be used in a meal I'm cooking. Even in downtown Philadelphia there are a limited number of state stores; it's a pain in the ass.

As for preventing underage sales, it doesn't work. Beer is sold at beer distributors; the typically turn a blind eye to college students. The Springfield Beer Distributor in Philadelphia next to the south Street Bridge, for instance, services Penn and Drexel. students A few years ago a fight between customers broke out there. When the police arrived and checked IDs, it turned out that a dozen of the people buying beer had fake IDs.

Yeah, I live in Philly (if you haven't been reading my posts to the hurricane relief threads that have been happening for a week) and i too am glad that we dont have to drive to dirty jersey on sundays any more to get our drink on.

I can't understand anyone that bashes yuengling. Not only is it the country's oldest brewery, it's good, and it's fairly cheap. Most bars (at least in this area of the country) have it on tap, which means you can get a 16 ouncer for like, $2.50.

pimp suit

It was easier to get drugs than it was to get ALCOHOL! drugs!

Alcohol is a drug too, it really bothers me when people say 'drugs AND alcohol.' As a matter of fact, it is my opinion that alcohol is absolutely the most dangerous drug on the planet, and tobacco the most lethal. Alcohol kills @500,000 people each year, not necessarily the ones who were drinking, either. Can you say 'DUI'? Can you say that for any of the other drugs? Drugs do not kill people; people who can't handle drugs kill people. Vioxx kills people too, as was recently published, as they tried to hide those results of heart attacks. Why would they do that? Oh yeah, because it would cut into their farking profits.

I've done coke, and never gotten agressive to the point of hitting someone or otherwise. I've smoked pot and that only makes me lazy and complacent. I've done X and it did absolutely nothing for me. I've done shrooms and tripped. I've done special K and only ever got up to refill my beer.

I've gotten drunk, and was arrested for DUI after getting extremely belligerant with police. Read my citation here.

The most dangerous drugs are the legal ones. Other than that, they should all be legal. You can't blame an inanimate object for breaking the law, or else 'personal responsibility' will surrender.

/legalize hemp and stop our countries dependence on middle east oil

While I agree with your points about alcohol, fast food probably kills more and costs the health-care industry even more. So considering that it can be legitimately healthily used, it's impossible to ban.

Cigarettes on the other hand are highly addictive and simply kill.

Man... I tell ya, in the olden days, it was really difficult being an alcoholic in PA.

You kids with your relaxed laws these days have it pretty darn easy.

toxilious: GO YUENGLING!!!!!

Poor girl.

WOO HOO!!! I need more beer for after the Cubs game tomorrow in Pittsburgh, and I was wondering about blue laws.... Guess I know the answer now.

2005-09-04 02:11:50 AM
The laws are stupid here on alcohol.

They did a study, the kids never got alcohol from the stores or distributors. Parents, family members and older friends bought it for underagers. The prevalance and the fact that these older people approve of it means the law is in fact wrong.

Iron shiatty is a horrible beer, Yuengling is only one step down from Red Stripe in my opinion. Rolling Rock sucks in my opinion too.

And pimp suit is full of shiat, I don't think we have ABC stores here, all liquor has to be bought at a state liquor store... that just started doing Sunday sales at selective stores. Oh and at most you have to stop at the liquor store and the beer distributor, depending on the beer store usually you can get mixers and ice, and tobacco at the beer stores.

oh and YUENGLING is the farking Nectar of the Gods!

In other news, as of September Washington State will allow liquor sales on Sundays...

Thank farking FSM !

Now if we can only get them to allow sales of grain alcohol and beer in regular stores... then I'd never have to go to New Jersey again !

DE resident here. PA has some of the dumbest alcohol laws ever. The few partys I've helped organize up there have nearly driven me nuts.

DE had the Sunday blue law crap, but got rid of it a year or two ago. Thank god. And we can at least buy liquor and beer in one stop shopping.

Yuengling is nectar (and I have 2 cases in my beer fridge right now). There are better beers in existance. Just not many as cheap and tasty at the same time.

The more I travel around the more backward PA looks. We are making progress. I can remember the day when you could not even look at the stuff until you bought it. You went into the State store and looked in a book and told them what you wanted and they went into the back and got it.

Dumb.

As a Christian, I think the no Sunday alchohol sales laws are ridiculous, for the following reasons:

1) I believe all seven days of the week to be equal--I don't have a problem with someone working on Sunday (or Saturday). In the book of Romans the apostle Paul says that some esteem one day above another, while others consider them equal, and let each man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

2) What's the difference if you buy booze on Sunday or any other day of the week?

3) Any Christian that wishes to stay away from alcohol (like me) isn't going to buy it ANY day of the week.

4) I feel that Sunday liquor laws violate the church/state thing. It's like you're imposing the belief that Sunday is holy and you shouldn't be doing anything on that day, which goes back to my first reason.

See what I'm getting at?

Ahh, dear Pennsylvania. The booze laws in this state have always been weird.

Years ago, circa 1968-69 when I was 12-13 yrs. old, I could ride my bicycle to the local beer distributor with a note from my parents to get a case of beer to bring home for my father. No problem, no hassle. The man running the place always would talk with me and was a cool guy.

A few years later, my buddies and I would drive from New Castle out Rt. 422 across the Ohio line to get a couple of 6-paks and would then have to drive thru Youngstown over to Rt. 224 to come back to PA so the cops at the 422 line couldn't pick us up for crossing the state line with alcohol purchased in another state (tax revenue evasion).

I often bought a beer to go with my hot dogs at the P.O. Lunch restaurant in New Castle from the time I was 17, but never got carded until after I hit 21!

The beer distributors can not advertise pricing.
Coupons are not accepted for any kind of "adult beverages" in PA.
Beer distribs can only sell beer & pop (i.e. Pepsi, Coca Cola, 7-up, etc.), but no wine or hard liquor. For the wine & "hootch", ya gotta go to the State Store.

I still like to go over to Ohio once in awhile because the Giant Eagle store (and other grocery stores) there can sell beer, pop and wine all at once with the only stipulation being that the checkout clerk must be over 21 years of age to sell the items to you.
But it's still illegal to cross the state line with any alcohol.
Damn tax laws!

...meanwhile, in much of Kentucky, we can't buy package beer at all.

Former PA resident for 22 years...

Enjoy what you guys have, I've living smack dab in a dry county now!

Oh, and the whole Pennsylvania liquor law system isn't because of moral reasons, it's because of business reasons. The state owns all liquor stores and uses sales to raise revenue for the Commonwealth. They've simply passed laws eliminating the competition from grocery stores and gas stations. The fact that they're closed on Sundays is to give those state employees time off.

pentalpha is correct. The situation in Kentucky is horrible, corrupt, and unconstitutional. It goes unnoticed by the rest of the nation because, well, who the hell cares about Kentucky?

The residents who grew up here are so beaten down and dejected that rather than change the system they just ignore laws. Hence the growing criminal problems, like the thriving drug industries, like the pot farms, or meth.

Something needs to be done. It's America, dammit. The goddamn supreme court has even said states can't make stupid laws like Kentucky has to please highway liquor stores and pad the pockets of lobbyists. We aren't teenagers. We are adults. LET US BUY OUR BEER.
