Believe this story or not, but it has happened before and I was there. East St. Louis, Great flood of the 90s along the ole Miss. I was ANG, just arrived there at their craphole of a HS, the neighbors were shooting right at the helos as they came in, police dispatched to stop them. Scary as heck, almost as much as that HS was (though funnily enough it had a bright, shiny, multi-million dollar sports complex attached to it - we showered there but were forced to stay in the gym of that HS and it was just disgusting). They even shot at our building a few times.

You're an excellent spokesperson for eduction and socio/economic liberalism. American has a chance to be the greatest country in the history of mankind, but instead we are 43'rd in the world in terms of education. I truley believe the education solves so many of societies problems that it should be the second priority of any society (behind healthcare).

We lost most of our house during Andrew - lived in the living room and bathroom (6 people) for four months w/o power or water. I don't remember people behaving this poorly in Miami... but then we didn't have a TV.

I'm just thankful it was wind damage for us - I can't imagine how unbearably nasty it would be to be in an already somewhat dirty city filled with skanky water.

Good post, and you're right, I didn't present a solution. Let me tell you one thing, I wouldn't have cut the funding to shore up those levees, but dealing with the situation at hand, I would have done a lot more to evacuate that city to avoid it becoming what it has. I would have forced the bus stations and airports to stay open to ferry EVERYONE out, not just those with money.

Hurrican Cindy was a wakeup call that was ignored, so there was no relief plan on the books for a disaster that has been discussed for years. At this point, I would call up every available ship (Navy, cruisline, etc) to offer temporary housing and to get those people out of that water. If there is the breakdown of society that is being reflected here, about all you can do is use a helicopter with a PA to let people know there can be no rescue unti the gunfire stops; this might help people to govern themselves.

There simply are not enough National Guard troops in the area, because of the war, so I'm at a loss as to how to expedite MP's into the area. Most of what this administration has done are things that I would not have done, so cleaning up their mess is a little like volunteering to clean up a rest-stop bathroom.
