CNN just did a report from the dome, with a helicopter in the air, and didn't mention a fire at all.

2005-09-01 08:12:54 AM
HEADLINE: September 13, 2005

Breaking news tonight..as reported two weeks ago, over 100 inmates from a New Orleans prison were transported to the Astrodome as part of the mass migration of former residents of New Orleans.
Tonight, we sadly report those inmates have taken the entire Astrodome hostage, and are threatening to kill 100 people per hour until their demands are met.
More to come..

2005-09-01 08:13:21 AM
To the extent that Bush is partially responsible for this mess, it's because the budgets he's submitted to Congress have seriously cut public works specifically in the area of addressing the situation and risks of just such a situation in New Orleans.

Depends. Given the prevalence of a site like FARK, the news WILL get out, just at a slower rate. So unlike in say, Camille, the local, state and federal authorities cannot just sit on a story indefinitely.

We will likely hear this on CNN at 10 or 11am, with a better perspective (see below).

Also remember the people on the ground speaking on these scanners are like the blind men on the elephant they too only see part of the situation. CNN is in contact with HQ, who can provide a complete picture of things.

Defender 3 are asking Bulldog 3 for a high-water vehicle to help the firefighters get in. Apparently Bulldog 3 has found one though.

When people fire on rescuers, its time to bring in these guys:

The scanner link is a small capacity link. Go to the Blog from the registrar company for video and updates if you dont have the scanner link. Its a great site( the blog)

The scanner is going in and out. Dont waste your time asking.

The guy at the blog has been updating in real time. He has an ICQ# thats active and has IM when he's not busy.

Live Blog from Guy in the Center of NOLA

/I did it!! HTML!! yippee!! anyway, enjoy everyone.

They need to evacuate these people as fast as possible, there are so many more where they come from.

Its negligent for them to stop the entire evacuation process because of a few alleged gun shots. More people will die because they are trying to teach people a lesson. This isn't the best way to reduce panic.

Most definetly, but I think any reports of whats going on in the dome will be to the effect of "shiat sucks, it got worse, now its better" with few if any details.

Drew: I just greenlit a thread about the superdome fire, can you guys move the updates to that one?

Will do.

cracking: who the hell would open fire at a chopper? Let alone one on a rescue mission.

Yeah, religion of Peace my ass, we should just pull out and let those animals kill each other.

Robobagpiper:

Sounds reasonable to me.

The point of a show of force is the show of force. Demonstrate that the rules of society still apply, and opportunistic looters will disperse.

No need to put guardsmen in a position where they might panic and massacre a crowd. If you need to shoot the odd armed looter, you do an aimed shot.

Absolutely incorrect.

When you send soldiers in to take control of a situation, you give them enough ammo to handle the job plus another 60 rounds on top of that.

Here's the deal on crowd control, especially scared/angry/violent armed crowds:

They may or may not disperse with the killing of a couple of their fellow crowd members. It all depends on the state of the crowd. Sometimes, killing a couple of the worst ones will cause the crowd to disperse.

Sometimes, it will only enrage the crowd further.

Soldiers have to be prepared for the worst-case scenario, which is that the crowd is only enraged further. In that scenario, they need lots of lead to throw down range.

So, you equip them for worst-case scenario and hope for the best-case scenario.

Speaking from 9 years of military experience, I have a decent idea of what I'm talking about.

You know what, to hell with them. We should turn NO into a big social experiment, and see what kind of primitive life form those people will regress into. So next time someone starts to make excuses for them, we'll just point to this incident.

2005-09-01 08:18:26 AM
Oh, and Bush is partially responsible for the chaos because the Louisiana and Mississippi National Guard should be in Louisiana and Mississippi, not around the world fighting a war of choice because he knew he couldn't get away with fighting his war without either plundering the Guard and Reserves, or instituting a draft (which would have been the end of his presidency).

People riot. People loot. Put them in the right conditions, and it will happen. That's one reason we have the Guard, to step in and be the visible presence of society's laws, to protect our country.

They are not "soldier, w/ lower pay and training".

This is the first liter thread that I have seen in a longtime. Its just a free for all trolling fest.

Reminder to self -- don't go in to greenlit threads.

You know about the membrane covering that came of the roof of the Superdome? They had to install it because the roof leaked. Why did the roof leak? Bullet holes. People drive by the Dome on the expressway and shoot the roof. It has been happening for years.

When you send soldiers in to take control of a situation, you give them enough ammo to handle the job plus another 60 rounds on top of that.

The "job" is not to destroy an enemy brigade or take a hill. It is to establish a government authority.

If they were sent in to tackle an armed insurgency, they should be heavily armed. If they're sent it to disperse mostly unarmed looters, they are sent in lightly armed.

I wouldn't want to live in the state you fantasize about.

I'm sure it's been said better by others, but I have to say this..

If our FARKING National Guard people were here instead of risking their lives in Bush's folly, we wouldn't have as many problems in NOLA as we do!! People want a fast response? That went overseas years ago. Homeland security my ass.

/nuff said.

stpickrell:

steamingpile, I guess White people just have that 'decent behavior' gene that Black people are lacking. I think faethe has referred to looting during FL hurricanes; given that NOLA is 80% Black and that the people still there are mostly the poor, it is no surprise that most of the people left are Black.

BTW, looting was common during the Battle of Britain.

LOL when did you see the looting this widespread at any time during fla hurricanes? You know for the life of me I dont recall seeing looting like this, oh yeah we did, during the riots after the King verdict. Keep biatching at the man all you want, but when you fix the problems inside your community come biatch about inequality.

And are you realling bringing up a time that is a little more extreme than a friggen hurricane? You are an idiot, any slight google search will show you that there was very little looting and the citizens detained or reported them to the authorities. The only reason these people will get caught is that they are too stupid to realize cameras are everywhere.

Clavis, i don't think it sounds like anything is out of order with that ad UNLESS they've recently raised their prices. Sending money long distances is what they do. It is unfortunate that the picture accompanying the article wasn't Sunday afternoon happy-happy-feel-good kind of stuff. But such is life. (and death)

2005-09-01 08:25:20 AM
faethe:

Oh sure - but not mass anarchy like this. Like I said man - we shoot them. No harm no foul. You see your nieghbors house getting broke into, the farkers are armed, you shoot. I have never done this, and I don't know anyone who has, but thats the rule. Niel Bortz said at some point' its my right as an american to take a shotgun and gaurd my rubble pile'. He was reffering to people that are forced to evacuate and are not let back to thier property (its a point of contention down here). You need the shotgun to shoot people, not birds. Its just the way things are.

And your own theory goes down in flames

Since you're apparently too lazy to scroll up and read, here's a math problem for you. If LA has 13,000 members of the Guard, and 2,000 of them are deployed on foreign duty, how many does that leave behind for Governor Blanco to marshall in response to this disaster? I know, math is harder than trying to score random political points, jackass.

Move on - nothing left to biatch about here.

herne: Which is about exactly why you don't let soldiers be police.

In a normal situation, I completely agree with you.

But, in this situation, you've got people firing at military rescue vehicles in an area which is under martial law.

The time for a police-style force has passed, unfortunately.

Markoff_Cheney: ahem, bush: proving yet again that he is a man of action

after the fact.
that place should already be swarming with military to keep peace, dispurse aid, and assist in rescue efforts.
Shyt, this all should have been waiting for the sky to clear to pounce.
But now we get to play catch up with the worst natural disaster in centuries.

WAY TO WATCH THE WEATHER CHANNEL ON YOUR 5 WEEK VACATION YOU FARKING INCOMPITENT PILE OF HUMAN WASTE.
and Nahlins isnt making itself look like the pity case it should be...

Not that this is the place or time for politics, but Bush couldn't do anything until the Gov. of LA asked. It's the whole separation of state and federal responsibility. Why couldn't the trolls be the ones floating face-down in NOLA right now?

2005-09-01 08:29:35 AM
This is the difference between culture and society. NOLA may have a rich culture but the fabric of their society is paper thin like what one would find in the third world. I witnessed looting firsthand in the caribbean after hurricane hugo and have to say it's truly scarey how immediately everyone devolved into a pillage and burn mindset.

Once you give up a certain baseline decency that ought to an unquestionable norm in a western society you, in my opinion, give up the rights that would otherwise protect you. Release the dogs of war, I say. Import a few teams of special forces about to finish their training and let them practice some real urban combat.
Shoot to kill, and kill them all.

Unless the National Guardsmen that are in Iraq have the ability of absorb millions of gallons of water, they wouldn't be able to help the city more than they are already doing.

But don't worry tards, Bush definitely won't get reelected now!
