I know 2 guys fired so far, and have heard from several people that their work no longer allows Fark access. I imagine this is the culprit in most cases.

2005-08-29 07:26:04 PM
so....what's it doing...downloading the images from the boobies links or something?

/half RTFA

Another great reason to work from home.. yee haw!

2005-08-29 07:26:43 PM
It says they don't get fired because they browse fark.com (which incidentally has a SFW page these days) but because google.com pre-fetches the first search result, which could be for God knows what. Imagine doing a search for weather and including the phrase "storm front" in your search.

2005-08-29 07:27:07 PM
I would think someone would be more likely to get fired for Farking all day than for accidentally downloading a nipple.

2005-08-29 07:27:23 PM
NetNanny doesn't allow fark either.

2005-08-29 07:27:43 PM
so...how do you fix it?

2005-08-29 07:27:51 PM
so, uh, how do you turn it off?

You are obviously not a fellow government employee.

Odd. I use Google with Firefox all the time and I've never had that "prefetch" thing happen to me.

2005-08-29 07:28:58 PM
This is why you do work at work and fark at home.

2005-08-29 07:29:09 PM

To disable prefetching:
Add this line to your prefs.js file located in your Mozilla profile
directory to disable prefetching in firefox and mozilla browsers.

user_pref("network.prefetch-next",false);

or

You can also toggle this by typing "about:config" in an empty window,
and telling it to filter for network.prefetch-next. Then you
right-click, and choose "Toggle" to turn off prefetching.

or
You can also double-click any entry in about:config to change it.
Double-click a boolean and it's clever enough to figure out what you
want to change it to. :)

2005-08-29 07:29:33 PM
And you turn this option off by.... ?

2005-08-29 07:29:38 PM
1. Type "about:config" the address bar.
2. Scroll down to the setting "network.prefetch-next" and set the value to "False".

//using IE actually
///still, yay Opera!

2005-08-29 07:29:51 PM
so...how do you fix it?

Turn off your computer and wait.

...DO IT NOW!

Is there a preference to disable link prefetching?

Yes, there is a hidden preference that you can set to disable link prefetching. Add this line to your prefs.js file located in your Mozilla profile directory:

user_pref("network.prefetch-next",false);

We are considering adding UI for this preference (see bug 166648); however, our theory is that if link prefetching needs to be disabled then there must be something wrong with the implementation. We would rather improve the implementation if it does not work correctly, than simply expect users to locate some obscure preference in the preferences UI. Heck, the Mozilla preferences UI is already crowded enough ;-)

Update: By popular demand, Mozilla 1.3+ includes a preference in the UI to disable prefetching. See Preferences->Advanced->Cache to disable prefetching.

Exactly what I was thinking...

You'd think the author of the article would be so nice as to tell us how, because I don't see a "prefetch" option anywhere.

Thanks, Jeff and twoddy.

The article says there is a way to turn off the prefetch function. Instructions would be appreciated.

Thanks Jeff.

I don't personally have to worry about it, but its a good PSA.

erm, i meant twoody. sorry 'bout that.

Just when I was trusting Firefox.
Oh well. I use Safari most of the time anyway.

2005-08-29 07:33:37 PM
Hooray for being a teenager at home with parents who don't know computers.

2005-08-29 07:34:08 PM
Yay. I work from home. I display boobies links on multiple computers 24/7 and not get fired.

Not that...ummm...I actually do that or anything.

2005-08-29 07:34:14 PM
can someone explain this in stupid jock people terms?

2005-08-29 07:34:25 PM

I went from a job that allowed everything (even the sysadmin admitted to online gambling at work) to a job that blocks any newsgroups (including Slashdot, and boss knows I'm a computer geek) and a lot of shopping sites.

I don't even bother to try and visit Fark. And, since the net monitor blocks the downloading of any .exe, I couldn't even install Firefox (directly anyways), so we're an IE shop.

For the guys that were fired, I actually hope they gave you the option to resign. Hate going to job interviews and having to explain why you were fired. You mean, they didn't even give you a verbal/ written warning on your net use ?

naskar258: can someone explain this in stupid jock people terms?

twoody:
Open a new tab.
1. Type "about:config" the address bar.
2. Scroll down to the setting "network.prefetch-next" and set the value to "False".
(click on the value false)

matrix29 our theory is that if link prefetching needs to be disabled then there must be something wrong with the implementation.

It sounds like there's nothing wrong with the implementation, just that it's pre-fetching things that people don't want to see at work. This feature is basically grabbing information without the user's consent, which in my opinion is a little dangerous.

2005-08-29 07:35:47 PM
You know, the default Google page for FireFox has always creeped me out.

2005-08-29 07:35:49 PM
Aeonite: I'm glad my tax dollars are being put to good use.

Wait: you can download nipples over the internet?

Why was I not informed?!?!?!

naskar258: can someone explain this in stupid jock people terms?

Basically, Google decides, "hey, the user typed in CNN, so I bet they want cnn.com. I'll be super nice and start downloading the site early for them so it loads quicker." This could be a problem if it unknowingly does this with a NSFW page.

2005-08-29 07:39:28 PM
Pretty easy fix, thanks.

2005-08-29 07:40:03 PM
This is why, when I do fark at work, I do it via links over an ssh connection to my home machine...

2005-08-29 07:40:19 PM
Safari > Firefox.

2005-08-29 07:40:31 PM
My library uses Websense, which won't let me check my email, but lets me go on fark. Go figure on that one.

2005-08-29 07:43:02 PM
Face it everyone, Fark is never safe for work.
