deipnosophistry: ///mmm, Lasyone's meat pies

DUDE!!!!

You and I are prolly the only ones here who know about those!

Lived there in '79, and worked for Lloyd Hall at Natchitoches Glass and Mirror, on 114 Flora. Shop's still there, but now it's called "Hall's Glass". Lloyd died of cancer years ago.

New Orleans is sinking, and I don't want to swim.

The airlines aren't going to risk their planes saving people.
Also if their planes go down they get bad press and are held
liable. The press of "helping" people won't outway this.

Unshavenhelga: Ummm. Thought about what hurricane winds do to passenger jets? Let's not add large-scale aviation disaster to the list of problems facing NOLA.

Obviously I'm talking about flying before the hurricane hits.

I am not! The voices in my head told me so.

Oil Storm was such a piece of crap. All that upheaval because we depend on foreign oil, and the crisis is ultimately alleviated by... foreign oil.

I'm_a_moran: In about 12 hours will start the most amazing opportunity for the average man to get very rich.

Funny thing is, this storm will have a positive effect on the US GDP.

2005-08-28 04:14:20 PM
I love how Foxnews gets ripped on by Farkers for blowing the hurricane out of proportion, when in reality the NOAA weather bulletin is simply being read on the air..

2005-08-28 04:14:29 PM
mrvikings: All I'm saying is that I wanna see some tsunami-sized relief coming from europe and the rest of the world, just like we're alway handing out.

Yeah cos America is soooo impoverished! And it wasn't like "Europe" gave any money to the tsunami relief or anything.

/Best wishes to all caught up in this

"I like how the Fox News coverage makes a point to say "Bush urges Mayor to evacuate city!" Like, where would they be without Fearless George? Forget the fact that they've already been evacuating for two days. Of course Bushco is going to milk the situation for poll numbers."

The coverage, go ahead and hate on it if you want.

Bush? Nuh-uh. We're NOT making this a political flamewar. We've been though this already this thread.

The "Oil Storm" movie is a bunch of crap. It was not written by anyone who knows anything about geopolitics. It's typical crap put out by the same writers who make spaceships go "whoosh" in space.

Watch al Jazera's site to find out who claims responsability for this.

SickMind:

As the story concludes an awakened populace reconciles its losses and learns more about the character of our great nation. Our government expends all its financial political and diplomatic resources to get the countries infrastructure back on track. And our country emerges from these terrible events stronger and more dedicated to protecting the American way of life' a way of life that now means a permanent gas price of almost 4 dollars a gallon.

Still laughing at John Titor?

I don't know, maybe Bush did - oh, ewww - the right thing in telling Nagin to go with a mandatory evacuation of the city. God knows he wasn't doing it before.

Could someone more knowledgeable than me tell me why NWS still uses teletype? I thought with marine GPS, radar etc all seaworthy boats are capable of receiving rather more complicated communications, perhaps incorporating lower case, and punctuation, even an image or two.

/my own punctuation not withstanding.

Haven't left yet and won't be. We are just starting to see a slight bit of rain. I wish I could set up my webcam and put up a stream on my website for you guys to be able to watch too...

reminds me of Whitehouse.org's parody of ASK MATT DRUDGE:

Tim R. , from Bozeman, MT writes:
Hey Matt. Love what you do. Without your site, my blog would be just another masturbatory banalityfest that would have one less other site to link to! My question is, the thing that's so amazing about you is that while most journalists actually bother to become experts in just a few areas, you're somehow able to cover EVERYTHING really good! What's your favorite kind of story, anyhoo?

Matt Drudge:

* !!!!! HELLSTORM !!!!! *
Forecasters Predict Apocalyptic Wind, Rain, Fire, Snow, Sun, Fog and Meteor Showers

NOAA sources reveal storm pattern capable of complete planetary annhiliation- theoretically TODAY // Impacting NOW...

They are talking about the Superdome housing 45-100k people during this. Is the superdome designed to handle this type of storm? Is the structure that far above sea level?

Anyone know?

Lets keep the media war out of this one.

prowler8

Lets keep the hypocrisy of foreign aid distribution out of this one.

Alexandra

Clearly, this hurricane was created by a Hitleresque conspiracy between Cheney, Rumsfeld, Dennis Miller, and Gary Coleman. They are starting the new american nazi party, dontchaknow.

Not too knowledgable, but I figure the system works and would cost a shiat ton to upgrade everything.

Yes.

///hope you are no where near there now

No. I've lived many places since my Natchitoches days, including Massachussetts, Los Angeles and Germany. Currently in central Oregon.

My God that storm is enormous. Those people are completely farked. The old foggies that aren't leaving probably won't be found in the storm surge.

2005-08-28 04:18:42 PM
One thing the authorities don't want to do is start an evacuation they can't finish. If they fill up the airport with people who then can't get out, they've killed them all if the airport facilities don't hold up. Airports are generally located on land that is unsatisfactory for dwellings. They must have serious doubts about the safety of those facilities. That's why the airlines aren't doing more.

The freedom fighting winds of Hurricane Katrina have come to liberate the suffering people of New Orleans from the oppressive tyranny of property and electricity.

2005-08-28 04:19:31 PM
Pointless conspiracy observation: 9/11 was preceeded by the summer movie Pearl Harbor, about a sneak-attack on a sleeping nation. Katrina was preceeded by Oil Storm, which outlined an eerily similar devastating hurricane in the Gulf.

Coincidence!??!?!

Um, yeah. Probably. But if it keeps the stoners paranoid and away from my pizza, so be it.

Hicks fleeing the storm leaving behind the dolphins. Guess they want to be the smartest in the room after the storm.

2005-08-28 04:20:08 PM
Wow, they are expecting the field of the Superdome to flood.

2005-08-28 04:20:19 PM
I don't get this. There are actually people milling about at the Tropical Isle. Right now.

http://www.tropicalisle.com/webcam.html

Having never been there, is this place about 60 feet above sea level?

2005-08-28 04:20:29 PM
Sky is starting to look pretty nasty on the webcams.... Rode out one of the Fl hurricanes last year in Mickey's Land and was scared at a small one. Cant imagine what it would be like to be facing the Big Daddy of hurricanes. Good luck to everyone..

The better question would be: Is there enough room in the SuperDome? Seriously. Have you seen the mob of people trying to get there, and get in?

2005-08-28 04:20:47 PM
"We are going to flood here and we won't have people in the lower level. Electricity and a/c will fail. We are not here to feed people. We are not worried about what is tolerable. We are only concerned with these peope being alive on Tuesday morning. Roughly 10,000 people waiting in line. All belongings must be searched." Some official outside the Superdome on the WWL video.

WOW

If it keeps on rainin, levees goin to break,
If it keeps on rainin, levees goin to break,
When the levee breaks Ill have no place to stay.
Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan,
Lord, mean old levee taught me to weep and moan,
Got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home,
Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well.
Dont it make you feel bad
When youre tryin to find your way home,
You dont know which way to go?
If youre goin down south
They go no work to do,
If you dont know about chicago.
Cryin wont help you, prayin wont do you no good,
Now, cryin wont help you, prayin wont do you no good,
When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move.
All last night sat on the levee and moaned,
All last night sat on the levee and moaned,
Thinkin bout me baby and my happy home.
Going, gon to chicago,
Gon to chicago,
Sorry but I cant take you.
Going down, going down now, going down.

Now that's funny.

Really doubting that the Superdome will stand up to this onslaught .
100,000 trapped in the city .

Pray for them folks .

I listen to BERLINER RUNDFUNK 91!4 online, a German radio station, and they were talking about the hurricane during their last news segment. I heard "New Orleans ist kaput," and even my husband didn't need that translated. Eeesh.

2005-08-28 04:23:57 PM
They are talking about the Superdome housing 45-100k people during this. Is the superdome designed to handle this type of storm? Is the structure that far above sea level?

It's listed as a "last resort" facility due to less than ideal facilities.

2005-08-28 04:24:03 PM
Oh dear, they're doing weapons checks before letting people into the Superdome.

The homeland security guy says in response to a reporters question about the comfort level inside of the Superdome

"I'm not interested in tolerable or intolerable, I'm concerned about people being alive on Tuesday"

They really are treating this as a "Slouching towards Bethlehem" type of event.

Scary, Man. Scary

I am suprised nobody has blamed bush for this yet, because we all know its that damn global warming responsible for this!
