rtfa, submitter. the ad was not to disprove her obsession, the ad was to challenge anyone who didn't agree with her findings as to who did it.

"While she has acknowledged she cannot prove Sickert was in London at the times of all the murders, she says it cannot be proved that he was elsewhere."

Well then, case closed.

Er, RTFA, and the headline on the article: " Author denies 'Ripper' obsession" Works for me. Too bad Jack's brother is not as well known, Jerry the Crumpler.

Jack the Ripper is actually a living form of pure energy, feeding on fear. If you beam it into space with maximum dispersal....

bssrf4: Did you feel she had a real nasty hate on for Walter Sickert too? Half the book was her basically proving he was an arsehole.

While I cannot prove that you did not use a time machine to go back in time and commit those crimes, it also cannot be proven that you didn't. Therefore, you must be 'Andsome Jack.

God, this woman sounds like she's just so obsessed with her theory that she's not willing to consider any others.

Jack the Ripper? Screaming Lord Sutch is cooler.

I just wish she'd work this hard on her other books. The Scarpetta series has seriously gone downhill, and the Brazil series started out with one good book, then got seriously crappy.

2005-08-27 04:10:00 PM
I read her book too. While no conclusive proof is given, it does make Sickert a viable suspect -- at least as viable as others that have been named. On the other hand, maybe the poor guy was just another Ripper obsessed loony.

I don't think you need an ad in the newspaper to alert your fellow Ripper scholars of your findings or to challenge them to refute your case. This was simple PR, shedding light on some sort of controversy within her book to ensure a little curiousity and a spike in sales.

And if you notice, in the pic the estimable Lord Sutch is holding a case... that's CLOSED!

So this is something we can actually blame on The Liberal Media? Nobody tell Ann Coulter, or we'll never hear the end of it.

Rumor is that she (Cornwell) had a serious Jodie Foster obsession, too. Always calling Foster and asking her out. I don't know wheter Foster had to get a restraining order against her, but I think it's fairly obvious that Patsy is a little loopy.

Also, whoever said that it wasn't ironic is incorrect. It is manifestly ironic (assuming that the article and newspaper ad actually say what the headline implies. I didn't RTFA.)

I would just like to take this time here (though it isn't costing me anything, and it's not two pages) to say that I do not have a problem with alcohol, and I am not addicted to Fark.

I'm afraid so. While I'm in a confessional mood, I may as well reveal that I was responsible for Pearl Harbor, the rise of Communism, and the Disco craze as well. Again - I'm sorry.

jbcuky: First paragraph of the article:
Crime author Patricia Cornwell has taken out full-page ads in two national newspapers to deny she is obsessed with Jack the Ripper.

that's the journalist's opinion. the two part cited in tfa, " Cornwell wrote in the advert: "My ongoing investigation is far from an obsession but an excellent opportunity to provide a platform for applying modern science to a very old, highly visible case." "In Saturday's adverts, Cornwell called the case "far from closed" and challenged her critics to come up with concrete evidence of another suspect's guilt.

the "far from an obsession" bit was just an aside, to introduce the idea that "it's much more - modern science etc". i don't think the "obsession" part was nearly the bulk of the ad.

swahnhennessy: This was simple PR, shedding light on some sort of controversy within her book to ensure a little curiousity and a spike in sales.

i don't doubt that for a minute. :)

RandomExcess: A crime, so complex with seemingly contradictory evidence, has to be the work of some Higher Power.

you win. i was trying to use the "While she has acknowledged she cannot prove Sickert was in London at the times of all the murders," except changing it into an empty tomb. you did a better job at the same point though. :)

Mandrake, do you recall what Clemenceau once said about war?
He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

I hear her next book is going to be about who really framed Roger Rabbit.

2005-08-27 04:49:27 PM
I still find George Chapman to be the most likely suspect in the Ripper case. Hell, the Chief of Scotland Yard thought he did it.

Frankly, I can't read Jack the Ripper books because they always end up getting buried beneath the author's bias that his suspect is the real Ripper. I'd simply like to read about the murders, the evidence and the theories in separate parts and form my own conclusions.

Best place I've found for that is Crime Library's documentation of Jack the Ripper (and with his visage so well placed on the first page of the site, you'd think Johnny Depp was the Ripper).

2005-08-27 04:49:33 PM
I've always had cause for concern regarding the Jack The Ripper case.

I mean, given the evidence, he 'ripped' nothing and nobody.

Jack The Slasher, maybe, not ripper.

And who's to say his name was Jack anyway?

And that it was a 'he'?

There are so many confusing things with this case it hurts me 'ead, guv'nor.

Anyway, didn't Malcolm McDowell get him in the end?

I guess this case.. has me rattled.

Youre in for surprise
Youre in for a shock
In london town streets
When theres darkness and fog
When you least expect me
And you turn your back
Ill attack

I smile when Im sneaking
Through shadows by the wall
I laugh when Im creeping
But you wont hear me at all

All hear my warning
Never turn your back
On the ripper

Youll soon shake with fear
Never knowing if Im near
Im sly and Im shameless
Nocturnal and nameless
Except for the ripper
Or if you like jack the knife

Any back alley street
Is where well probably meet
Underneath a gas lamp
Where the airs cold and damp
Im a nasty surprise
Im a devil in disguise
Im a footstep at night
Im a scream of the fright

All hear my warning
Never turn your back
On the ripper...the ripper....the ripper

Patricia Cornwell's little theory has been debunked by actual Ripperologists, who also have shown how her methodology is very shoddy and inconsistent. www.casebook.org is a good place to start, for people interested in Jack the Ripper.

Anyone got any idea why many people still investigate Jack the Ripper to this day? It's been so long what difference will it make to find out who he was other than satisfying curiosity?

2005-08-27 05:57:41 PM
I believe her.

2005-08-27 06:08:36 PM
Cornwell is a completely useless investigator. I thought that was a well established fact for quite some time now.

Other Ripperologist dismiss her claims... because they woudl be out of a job if she actually solved it.
