2002-04-22 11:51:00 PM
Why on earth would Souix City need an airport?

2002-04-22 11:51:31 PM

2002-04-22 11:51:55 PM
Why do things sound funny until you type them out?

2002-04-22 11:52:26 PM
They probably want SXC, so they sound like they have good boobies. (sound it out folks)

2002-04-22 11:52:47 PM
This is OBVIOUS, not IRONIC.

And so is this comment.

2002-04-22 11:52:59 PM

2002-04-22 11:53:09 PM
SZPLUG

2002-04-22 11:53:49 PM
Strange but true:

Little Rock ICAO: KLIT

Rapid City ICAO: KRAP

2002-04-22 11:54:15 PM
I'm no fark newbie, but i am dumb sometimes, what is all this SZ plugging going on?

2002-04-22 11:54:25 PM
No, it's ironic because apparently Sioux City sucks. I have never been there, but I imagine that it does suck, like just about every place in this damn country.

2002-04-22 11:55:51 PM
Fresno is FAT....gotta love that one

2002-04-22 11:57:21 PM
Why the fark do so many people misuse the word ironic?

2002-04-22 11:57:40 PM
to heck with SUX, I want a t-shirt from KRAP

2002-04-22 11:57:47 PM
They also have a radio station called KSUX. Dorks.

2002-04-22 11:58:52 PM
Why do the rivers in Minnesota flow South?
Iowa sucks

Really lame joke. Sorry.

2002-04-23 12:01:36 AM
#1 How is this ironic?
#2 Nashville's airport is BNA. Why? I have no idea.

2002-04-23 12:02:17 AM
Velvet_Elvis: Actually Fresno is FYI now... Fresno-Yosemite International. But yeah, it used to be FAT.

2002-04-23 12:02:30 AM
When NorthTexas State University changed their name to University of North Texas, did they change the call letters on the radio station? KUNT?

Does LAX want to change theirs in these security-conscious times?

2002-04-23 12:04:42 AM
What's really is how people are calling this a misuse of the oft-misused tag, even though it's not.

2002-04-23 12:06:04 AM
Berry Field NAshville=BNA

2002-04-23 12:10:40 AM
SUX to your asmar! ahahhahaha... god I hated Lord of the Flies...actually no... I hated public high school... but yea, anyways... and stuff...

2002-04-23 12:13:13 AM
So you would expect Sioux City not to want to change its airport code Quarlie?

2002-04-23 12:15:10 AM
No one at the airport currently knows why the facility was designated SUX. With other airport designations, it's possible to reason out the derivation. ... New York's Laguardia's LGA is self-evident as is Los Angeles' LAX.

umm.. no one can figure out where SUX came from in Sioux City?

2002-04-23 12:16:26 AM
fark! bold tags don't work?

anyway, with the letters SUX all being in the word "Sioux" i don't see how it'd be hard to figure out where it came from.

2002-04-23 12:17:13 AM
Okay Quarlie, explain how it's ironic. What's the well-known connection between Sioux City and words that sound like "sucks"?

2002-04-23 12:20:25 AM
I think mom told Quarlie to turn off the computer and get in bed.

2002-04-23 12:26:23 AM
A rose by any other name....

2002-04-23 12:26:39 AM
Gee, thanks for the random slam. I'm so sorry to have confused you.

Presumably, the person who submitted the article is saying that Sioux City does suck (which is feasible, since it's in Iowa). Thus, wanting to change the code, which accurately describes the city, is ironic. Kukuman already explained this, but apparently you were too busy looking for someone to flame to notice.

2002-04-23 12:32:16 AM
You are full of crap Quarlie, it took you this long just to come up with an excuse for your stupid comment.

Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics . . .

2002-04-23 12:32:52 AM
I dunno, but it seems that this newsitem sux. Really. (I bow to the sound of one hand clapping...)

In other news, why is the LA aiport LAX? Where did the X come from?
This useless post was brought to you by the people who collect them.

2002-04-23 12:34:26 AM
They couldn't figure out where "SUX" came from? What I really want to know is where they got "YVR" from Vancouver, how the hell did that Y get in there? Or is it to designate Canadian airports?

2002-04-23 12:36:51 AM
Ha. Here's a pic of my sister holding up a baggage tag from her recent visit to Japan. I submitted this a while ago, but it wasn't amusing enough to get picked.

2002-04-23 12:38:19 AM
Sioux City has an airport?
The largest company in the world is headquartered in Arkansas?

Strange but true.

2002-04-23 12:41:10 AM
You are full of crap Quarlie, it took you this long just to come up with an excuse for your stupid comment.

Again, I apologize. I had not realized that I was supposed to devote every waking minute to Fark comments threads. Silly me, daring to do other stuff between posts.

2002-04-23 12:42:58 AM
Y designates Canadian Airports...the only reason I know that is if you look at intellicast weather it shows all the airport codes and every single canadian one starts with a Y

2002-04-23 12:53:23 AM
Quarlie: wanting to change the code, which accurately describes the city, is ironic

No, that is not remotely ironic. That's obvious.

2002-04-23 12:57:53 AM
I am in the Air National Guard, and my parent unit is in Sioux City. My old e-mail address used to be david*mylastname[nospam-﹫-backwards]xusai*ang*af*mil. It's not david*mylastname[nospam-﹫-backwards]uosiai*ang*af*mil***seems the military got ahold of this before the rest of the world...

2002-04-23 01:11:58 AM

I must be stupid.

I can clearly see that Sioux contains all of the letters for SUX, yet this article states:

New York's Laguardia's LGA is self-evident as is Los Angeles' LAX.

I have no idea where the X comes from in Los Angeles.

2002-04-23 01:13:54 AM
Dude! Are you selling penis mightiers?!

2002-04-23 01:18:15 AM
Sioux City is kind of crappy. It's like 100,000 people, I also think Gateway computer is located there so yeah it warrants an airport. The meth has to get to the world somehow.

2002-04-23 01:20:02 AM
A little bit of trivia. Remember about 15 years or so ago when that plane lost hydrolics and crashed landed. Big fire ball, yet people survived. That was at SUX.

2002-04-23 01:26:08 AM
I live in Sioux City! Hahahah! (Everyone laugh at me)

2002-04-23 01:28:10 AM
Impaler: That was Flight 232. They made a movie about it staring Mr. C. Heston. It was a mess, but Sioux City actually handled it quite well. My Aunt was the head RN at the hospital at the time... She had to travel the country and lecture other hospitals on how to prepare for such an accident.

FUK = Fukahara, Japan (spelling may be off a little).
I'm an ex-airline employee... Yes, "Y" does designate Canada. As for the "X" in LAX, not real sure. Some cities had to be "assigned" airport codes because the code they wanted was either taken or too close to some other code. SUX was always an industry joke.

2002-04-23 02:11:35 AM
With other airport designations, it's possible to reason out the derivation. For example, O'Hare International Airport in Chicago is ORD. It was originally known as Orchard Field. New York's Laguardia's LGA is self-evident as is Los Angeles' LAX.

Well, SUX makes sense, but Sioux is actually pronounced, "sue" so perhaps Sou or Siu would work.

Also, Gateway moved to Minnesota a while ago, but still has cows on their boxes. (they are and were located in a city on the iowa/minesota border)

And Airports are a lot more common then bit 'international' ones. Hell, Afghanistan had a working airline before the war. Lots of small towns have airports, Ames (where I live) has an airport.
