I hate to burst the one-hit wonder bubble, but...

1. Walking On Sunshine (1985) #9
2. Do You Want Crying (1985) #37
3. That's The Way (1989) #16

There's no official definition, but if only one of her songs made the top ten, then she's a one hit wonder in my book. Number 16 just doesn't cut it.

Doesn't mean they're bad. Hell, my favorite band is a one hit wonder.
("Touch of Gray" from their only top ten album "In the Dark", 1987).

BXRWXR

Was Tropical Depression 10 the name of her old band?

No, but you're right, "Tropical Depression 10" would be a great name for a rock band.

WELL PLAYED!

Zyklon B. Goode Amiee Mann. She still looks good at 40 something and she's still putting out music too.

2005-08-24 09:38:58 AM
When I read the headline, I actually thought, "Oh cool, I wonder where she is playing cause I would love to go see her, blah, blah, blah...." - then I clicked the link and was disappointed....

Kudos on the headline - you got me!

(Still off topic of the article): Ah, the 80's bands that won't die. I remember when I realized that we could never go back - about two years ago Def Leppard played the Greeley Independence Stampede in Greeley, CO (a "bedroom community" in Northern Colorado, population of about 75,000). My brother still lives in Greeley and was a huge Def Leppard fan in the 80's; even he didn't want to go to that show.

By the way, the Greeley Independence Stampede's biggest claim to fame are their rodeos. My, how the mighty have fallen.

I had a particularly memorable...uh romantic interlude during that song. Every time I hear it, I get a giant smile on my face.

/smiling now

Zyklon B. Goode: Aimee Man, who not only is still putting out good music (thanks, therecksays) but was also in THE BIG LEBOWSKI.

She was a Nihilist.
That was her toe!!

Zyklon B. Goode:

Aimee Mann was the chick from "Til Tuesday". And Katrina was a cutie.

Fave band with a chick lead singer: Pretenders. The early stuff. Chrissie Hynde was a badass.

/likes Katrina & The Waves.
//thinks hits are grossly overrated.

"Headline sucks"
"submitter is obviously a troll"
"Headline is misleading and wrong"
"submitter deserves the 'dumbass' tag"

That's what I usually get. I don't usually out myself as submitter, but then I'm not used to people actually liking my headline. Just this once I'll take the kudos.

/I was just the first
//too obvious

wpmulligan: Asteroth and Deathcow

I cried like a baby.

Man...add me to that list. I'm getting weepy thinking about it now.

Do any of you know the title to that song at the end?

As for TS Katrina, I guess I can't complain given what last year was like.

But can stop farking scheduling these things for the weekends?!

Although I like KatW, and have three of their albums AND I feel they were one of the most underappreciated and underrated bands from the 80's...they were a one-hit wonder.

"Do You Want Crying?", "Sleep on my Pillow", "Sun Street", "Money Chain", "The Sun Won't Shine"...all could have been MAJOR hits that people WOULD be humming today...but c'est la vie.

Maybe someday a reunion tour will come to the State fair.

2005-08-24 10:34:17 AM
Great headline. Made me chuckle. Have far too many 80s vinyl stashed away...

WoS was written by Kimberly Rew, original maniacal guitarist for The Soft Boys and longtime Robyn Hitchcock sideman. Laugh all you want at the one hit wonder, but that song is banking his retirement.

I'll never understand how Kimberly Rew went from neo-psychedelia to a hit that's still played at wedding receptions this very day. It must have been some journey.

ylikone: Can anyone else confirm this?

No man. That's what's happening up here in Orlando and yeah, my house doubled in value too. The thing thats making it happen is the interest rates. Low interest rates make a house payment cheaper than rent, even if you pay over what the house is worth. There's work here for new construction, certainly. That will bring carpenters and everyone else. The thing is, it won't last. About the end of the 80's (how very topical) same thing happened. Lotta people stuck with absolute shiate houses. Values do go down.

Another thing driving it is that we have no state tax down here. Our sales tax is also very low. Just wait a bit. Get you a good deal on a used house and make it up nice - flip it. Buy an empty lot.

Maybe The Carpenters are buying them up. But last I heard, carpenters can't afford places in WPB.

Hyernel & faethe: My condo complex is selling all the units and effectively is forcing us out. I'm pretty bitter about it, but I will be moving on Oct. 1.

You guys are more than welcome to come on over, drink some beers, and "simulate some storm damage" to this place! The new owners are treating us like crap.

How much salt does it take to salt the earth?

2005-08-24 01:44:01 PM
faethe - I was planning on going to St. Augustine anyway. This pishy little TS isn't going to spoil my fun.

/provided my new roof doesn't leak

Diogenes - what part of town are you in?

Don't worry about Fort Lauderdale getting hit. I am pursuing my usual strategy of sacrificing cockroaches as the storm nears. You may well laugh, but since I started doing this, decades ago, not a single hurricane has hit my neighborhood.

Some prefer chickens for sacrifice, but our Flori-duh cockroaches have just about run off all the free-range chickens.

/Got one large cockroach corpse at each corner of the house.

Is that inside or outside of the house, and are you talking about cockroaches (non flying), or palmetto bugs (flying mutant hell-roaches)?

If you lose power I hope it's not a gas grill you'll be using inside or I'll be reading about you in the Sun Sentinel.
