Statistics usually bore me.

But when they're used to show the level of utter suckingness of a team I don't care about in a sport that's really just overpaid white men suntanning, I like it.

I like it a lot...

2005-08-22 02:48:32 PM
Than what do the Royals do? Christ, they're terrible. At least Duke is a powerhouse basketball team with championships out the ass, the Royals got NUTTIN'.

Yes, but we still pwned the Cr4ds back in '85.

They've played 122. They'd have to win every one of their remaining games, and still have no chance of breaking even.

Wow.

Good job, A's. Cap off a crappy homestand by losing 2 straight to the Royals.

I live in Cleveland and am an Indians fan, and was lucky enough to see the tribe take on the Royals. They truly are the greatst show on earth, albeit for the wrong reasons. You can tell half of them don't speak the same langauge, and most of them just joined the team or will be leaving the team soon. The just sort of sit quietly in the dugout until it's their turn to go not catch balls efficiently.

/Go Tribe!

Semi ThreadJack -

The NL West is pathetic. Their Automatic Playoff Bid should be yanked and the NL should have two WC teams this year. It could be the Cards, and the Braves, and whomever manages to scratch out the top two spots in the WC race (turning out to be a real dogfight).

Things work out, you could have the Cards, Braves, Phils, and Nats in the Playoffs under this system. I likes...

/NL East is the toughest conference in the Leauge. Whomever finishes 2nd will get the WC and promptly lose to the Birds.

My room-mate is a huge Royals fan - he watches every game.

For those that don't know, the Royals triple-A team the Omaha Royals is actually a pretty swell team.

2005-08-22 02:56:37 PM
Argh! My A's had that game and it was painful to watch. Extra innings I figured would be no problem but I figured wrong. Worse than losing to the hapless Royals is the fact the foul and fetid Yankees are right on the A's butt in the wildcard race. I swear if the A's lose the wild card to the Yankees I'll do something violent and weird. Then again the way things are going for me these days, violence and weirdness is almost inevitable.

2005-08-22 02:59:51 PM
I bet some people remember when the Royals rocked!

But those same people remember gas being 10-cents a gallon.

//hinting the Royals have sucked for a very long time.

2005-08-22 03:00:09 PM
My child-hood team. One of the best palces to watch a game anywhere. They've petty much sucked since Ewing Kaufman died.

2005-08-22 03:00:19 PM
Even the Devil Rays are better (51-73).

/will sleep well tonight

2005-08-22 03:00:30 PM
The Royals are only 4 wins away from assuring the fact that they'll do better than the '03 Tigers. What a sad season that was.

/Anyone remember Cecil Fielder?

2005-08-22 03:07:47 PM
IF they can win two more straight games, they'll tie for the best-ever winning streak following a 19-or-more losing streak...

61 Phillies and 75 Mets are the other two 19-or-more loss streak broken by 4-game-win streak teams.

2005-08-22 03:09:05 PM
can't wait till my Yankees play them next month!

/ Yanks will win the wild card

2005-08-22 03:09:45 PM
Its just payback, really. Two weeks ago, the Athletics pasted the Royals something like 15-1 at Kaufman. That was a sad game. :(

Kecthup keeps winning the damn hot dog race, too. What the heck happened to relish???

/It's one of those dumb things they show between innings on the bigscreen

2005-08-22 03:11:04 PM
Submitter here (I'm on a role, 2 in one month!). It was mentioned, but just to show the stats:

The Royals are 40-82 as of this morning, leaving 40 games left for them in the season. If they win every game from here on out they will still be 40 games under .500.

Even better stuff:

If the Royals win 40 straight and the White Sox lose 40 straight, the Royals would only win the division by 4.5 games.

The Royals will have to go 23-17 to avoid losing 100 games, a winning percentage of .575, over .250 points higher than their current win percentage.

To avoid breaking the Tigers 2003 record of 119 losses, the Royals will only have to win 4 more games this season.

Hmmmm, I think this means that the Yanks are now tied for the wildcard with Oaktown, pending tonight's game against the BlewJays.

/still hoping for the AL East title, Wildcard is for the RedSox to get excited about.

Why the heck did this get the obvious tag? Perhaps "follow-up" since we don't have a boring tag.

wait...no one whining about MLB's lack of a salary cap yet?

well, excellent. let's keep it that way. the royals don't suck because they're cheap, they suck because they got rid of jermaine dye, johnny damon, and carlos beltran while getting absolutely *nothing* of value in return. i mean, when al baird turns jermaine dye into neifi freakin' perez, you can't possibly tell me that it's only finances that are keeping the royals from the big trophy.

2005-08-22 03:21:48 PM
The Royals are winning games now? Maybe going to see next Sunday's game in Da Bronx won't be such a bore.

haemaker: Got to give credit to the Mets. Not far out of the WC, even if they are last in their division.

The Yanks won't make it this year. And I'm a fan, and I believe this. They won't get the wild card.

2005-08-22 03:32:07 PM
It will be interesting to see how the Yanks/Sox/Angels/A's thing pans out.

Odds are the Yankees won't win the division. Sure, all it would take is a mild tear, but they're showing no sign that they're capable of that, or that the Sox are gonna slump that bad. When it comes to the A's and Angels, I don't see the Yanks or Sox keeping up in the Wild Card, unless maybe Schilling and Foulke both come back in top form (unlikely). Neither the Angels nor the A's have any real holes in their roster. The A's are questionable, considering their current mini-slump and terrible first half, but I don't believe you can go on the kind of run they did if you seriously lack something, kind of like the Red Sox in August 2004--they just didn't have any weak spots. They were just seriously underperforming at the start. Both Anaheim and Oakland own the Yanks and Sox in team ERA, which is what counts in September and October.

2005-08-22 03:32:57 PM
I'm a Sox fan, BTW, and the Sox pitching situation does not look good for the postseason.

king cranium maximus IV: the royals don't suck because they're cheap, they suck because they got rid of jermaine dye, johnny damon, and carlos beltran while getting absolutely *nothing* of value in return.

And that has nothing to do with them being cheap? Them not being able to afford the salaries of the stars they created has everything to do with that. Sure, Wal*Mart Man could spend more, or Baird could actually do his job and get some trades with at least prospect value in return for the big guns whose asking price just went through the roof, but your assertion that finances have nothing to do with it is just puzzling. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot wrong with the Royals, and a lot of it has nothing to do with their payroll. Their farm system is almost depleted, which is all but impossible to do with a team that has sucked this much for this long. But Baird has done it. What money they do spend on free agents is completely wasted on washed-up guys who were never that great in the first place and barring a miracle they will continue to suck and be in eternal rebuilding mode for far longer than their remaining fans have the patience for.

Why couldn't the poor Royals have just sucked in peace, anonymously like the other 50% of MLB out there... :(
