The charge of Western influence is sensitive just now, with the Ministry of Culture's announcement this month that China will issue no further licences to foreign TV satellite broadcasters and tighten controls over the 31 existing foreign licence-holders, to "safeguard national cultural safety".

If you have to "safeguard" your culture, you've already lost. You might as well send out le courriel to all of your friends letting them know.

Hmm, culture safeguarding...ya know I too am worried about the safety of the cultures in my yogurt. Were they to become dead, it would lose many of it's benefits.

RamblingKey: Sounds better than Japanese Horse Ice Cream Supergirl Contest

Translators who know what they are doing have respect. Literally that would be:

"Cream of horse with girl who is excellent contested ice cream in Japan"

Does it still sound better now?

Speaking of TV, why the hell isn't there a thread about the series finale of Six Feet Under? The last 5 minutes were amazing.
2005-08-21 10:19:30 PM
That is the best name for a TV show ever. The romance is over for me now; no other TV show name will ever seem witty again.
2005-08-21 10:19:43 PM
The last five minutes may have been good, but they don't make up for the last 2 years of sucking.

This thread is useless without a pretty naked asian girl covered in yogurt.

Which sounds like a polite way to say...Umm...never mind.I'm not gonna go there.

Worldliness on Chinese Idol:
*Problem when taking applicants- it's for China, so only Chinese should get to apply. We have no problem there as I read.
*Not a problem when dealing with song choice, which is the Chyinese FCC's issue. If an American Idol applicant decided to audition with 'O Canada', go right ahead. Just don't expect to survive to Hollywood.

I'm sorry, but if the show's title doesn't have the words "Super", "Happy" and "Fun Time" in it, then I'm not interested.

Isn't there a right-winger on the radio who wants to protect the American culture?
2005-08-21 11:01:37 PM
On one hand, that is the most openly insane title for a contest. On the other hand, they could call it "Crazy Chiang's Beastiality Hour" and I'd still watch it, just to see those girls. Hawt.

They also sound creepy for trying to discourage "worldiness." Even Castro's loosened up his communist state in recent years to foreign trade and culture. Time to get with the program, China. Stop waffling about rotten yogurt, cattle and pretty girls for a minute and pay attention to all this.
2005-08-21 11:03:08 PM
My gf was getting all excited about this show. I watched it, and it was "American Idol". Gah.

She was pretty deflated when I told her it was a copy. And "American Idol" wasn't even a real show, it was a copy of another show, from Europe I think.

The best part was a traffic policeman doing a routine with his police whistle. He was so serious, and nobody seemed to notice how totally stupid the whole thing was. They even had dancers come out and he escorted them across the "intersection" onstage. Hilarious.
2005-08-21 11:04:29 PM
Hah. I like the phrase "Hockey bukkake," if only for the mental images it conjures.
Oh, and...

"...the show might be taken off air if it doesn't quickly correct its 'worldliness'".

/f*ckin' worldliness, eh?

Oh, and by the way, GIS for "MXC" yields weird possibly photoshopped siamese twin pr0n.
2005-08-21 11:06:58 PM
On the crazyness of the title I am guessing that "Mongolian Cow Sour Yogurt" is a product and the sponsor of the event. Thus, it's "[Sponsor] Supergirl Contest", not a contest involving sour yogurt..
2005-08-21 11:07:45 PM
The contestants have brought to the stage a smorgasbord of sex object stereotypes, from tomboy and pouting schoolgirl to babydoll and glamour queen.

This thread is useless without pics.

"Mongolian Cow Sour Yogurt Supergirl Contest"

Wow, that's actually a somewhat accurate translation. Amazing.

I was in Chengdu at the time of the first round of auditions. Imagine 50,000 hot young Chinese girls flooding the city, lined up outside a shopping center for 20 blocks.

Too bad I didn't realize what was going on at the time...
