I wish Iowa would get a job and move out of Minnesota's basement.

The Fam lives in IA right now, and they all went to the fair. The mullet-related festivities weren't restricted to randomly ambushing the wearers; there was a mullet contest as well.

/is glad to be out of the midwest

As opposed to my sister's paper's version of the story.

I saw the best mullet at my fair the other night. The guy had platinum blond hair (a la Hulk Hogan). The top and front of his head was shaved to a flat top, and then the back was long, flowing hair about 6-7 inches long.

vendaz: what does your sis do, ManAtWork?

She's one of the writers. Specifically the Bar Fly column, and the recent strip club cover story.

I mis-spent a Midwestern youth mocking the sartorial mis-steps of those around me, only to move to Brooklyn in the early 90s to find out that all the cool kids were dressed like farmers. Carhart jackets, work boots, and feed-caps.

If I could go back in time I'd be kinder to those who valued function over form or were just too dirt-poor to give a shiat about how their hair was coiffed. Especially on the one of the few times of the year they are just out looking for a bit of fun. It fills me with a mild shame.

Oh yeah, my gf really enjoyed that story, we picked it up on our last DSM trip. If I could actually find a job at someplace other than Principal, I'd come back to town...

I like Iowa. It's clean, boring, friendly. Fresh air. Some good bars in Cedar Rapids and the Dez. They got Culver's, the BEST fast food chain in the country. Some minor league baseball and hockey. Nice state. Nice place to vegitate.

/probably wouldn't want to live there though.

they shoulda hit a Metal Church concert, they would have even seen the rare femullet.

At least this story didn't come outta Wisconsin.

I prefer to do my mullet hunting in "stealth" mode. Mullet hunting in Portland, OR. can be a bit dicey if the mark figures out that you're laughing at them through photography.

Considering the baseline intelligence for mullet-wearers, it's about a 50/50 shot.

The best mullet i have ever seen was when i was working as a lifeguard. A black family would come in to swim and the father and THREE sons each had mullets. But these were no ordinary mullets....these were jerry-curl mullets. Fully greased and permed up. It kills me just thinking about them.

_would love to see their family photos

2005-08-21 03:40:36 PM
rare femullet.

Rare??? Mosta the mullets I see nowadays are on women, generally lesbians or Mexicans. I have a great MexiMullet pic which I would post if I was at home...

I had a girlfriend with a mullet a couple years ago. She was such a farking hipster. I have to admit is was funny though, and cute in this really perverted way.

I'm old enough to have had Jerri Curls when they were real popular. Aside from all the maintenance, I gave up wearing them the day I fell asleep on a bus, and when I woke up, my hair had smeared all the grease on the bus window.

Not to mention the relaxer you had to put in your hair to straighten it out. I'm pretty sure 50 percent of the 'relaxer' was made out of lye.

"--and it must extend from the bottom of the hair." What does this mean? I know what a mullet is, but I don't understand this part of their definition. Anyone?

Wait....making fun of mullets. Its a sick, sick world man. I rock the ol' 10/90, chicks dig it man.

GIS gave me the following ethnic variation of a mullet:

Ever wish you lived in a world where people grew up at some point? Yes I'm talking about the mullet hunters, not the mulletees.

/doesn't have a mullet, for the record

Mullets can even be worn with thinning hair.

No. Sounds pretty dull.

Hot diggity!!! Now that thar's a dang fine mullet!!

Is this the mullet family you were talking about?

My wife and I play a similiar game on our weekly trips with the kids to the zoo. We look for: parents with cigs, guys in wife beaters, women with tatoos, and of course mullets. Today it was crowded as hell but the wife beaters won huge followed by parents with cigs. We only saw one mullet. I think people are wising up.

Nah, I like living in a world where people do silly stuff.

Boy do I miss the culture of the midwest. Especially the issue of weight. In California I'm lineman sized, but in Illinois my nickname would be 'slim'. And don't forget those hilarious Iowa meth searches.

2005-08-21 04:38:12 PM
I'm not sure that a group drinking vodka spiked kool-aid and bud light has much room to be making fun of people who wear mullets.

As far as living in IA, its not really different here than anywhere else. Some good people, some a**holes. Some things you can do, some things you can't.

Cityview is a great paper - though I wasn't impressed by the stripper story. Barfly seems pretty spot on though. Kudos to your sister.

oh and screw the iowa state fair.

2005-08-21 04:53:25 PM
the Iowa State Fair isn't the place to go hunting mullets. The prime hunting grounds are in Palm Springs during the Dinah Shore golf tournament. All you have to do is look at ground until you see a pair of Birkenstock sandals and then look up past the Andrea Dworkin size 54 overalls or Billie Jean King coach shorts and if you're not looking at a Prince Valiant cut then you have most likely have found yourself a mullet.

2005-08-21 04:53:59 PM
I don't know about Iowa, but back up north in Ontario, the mullet just never went out of style.

2005-08-21 04:56:02 PM
I went to Europe a couple summers ago, and there is some great mullet hunting over there. Saw the best mullet ever in Czech Republic, although I think the owner was from Germany.

It's an international phenomenon!

Yup. In Denmark we call it svenskerhaar ("Swede hair").
Dunno what the Swedes call it.

I've never understood the whole fuss over people with a mullet. I've seen black people with haircuts far more farked up than a mullet, and no one seems to make a fuss over that.

2005-08-21 05:05:37 PM
What I find particularly interesting is that in the 80's, no one referred to this haircut as a "mullet". At that time, it was called a "spike", particularly if the hair in front was gelled up and sticking up like spikes. It makes me wonder if poodle skirts, "greased back", and flappers were ever actually in the vernacular at the time they occurred.

2005-08-21 05:06:15 PM
That is a fun article.
