Those evil corporations, forcing me to fly down to Vegas and making me blow all my money on crooked blackjack.

Why is this scary?

TeaEarlGreyHot: Why is this scary?

I never expect the damn games to be rigged. Mathematically stacked against me, yes. But not honouring winning bets? C'mon, where's the fun in gambling if they're just going to take their ball and go home if you actually win?

I think I have to agree with submitter -- I'd be better off going to a mafia casino.

I can't understand how anybody can successfully count cards at blackjack with 8 decks in the shoe and a dealer that is supposed to re-shuffle whenever anybody is suspiciously winning too much....

I won $6.25 from a poker machine at NYNY...luckily, they honored my winning. I was then only $4 short for two bottles of water at the Tangerine bar in front of Treasure Island.

Gee,....mega-corporations robbing their customers blind or denying them what they've rightfully earned. That never happens in an unregulated "Free-Market" society.

It seems to be that in today's corporate world, consumer/customer = employee. Someone to be fleeced.

Who the hell didn't know this already? Gaming commission? Come on. They're a farking joke. Vegas can do whatever the hell they want to do. If you win too much, Joe Pesci buries you in the desert, that's the way it is. Solution? Don't gamble in Vegas.

You can't. As a card counter, the odds are only a bit in your favor if you're counting cards with three decks. The way it is on most casinos, card counting is useless. I only use my l33t blackjack skilz in friendly games with friends or at computer blackjack. My advice for gambling in Vegas? hit the slots at the casino entrances, they pay out. Then get a $5 steak and go watch a gay guy get eaten by a tiger.

Clearly no surprise... corporations exist to increase the wealth of the stockholders. Paying to cheats, theives, counters, and lucky batards is counter to that objective.

/I trust the courts to settle this matter. Dispite the political pressure!

It's scary, TeaEarlGreyHot, because the "lifeblood" of Vegas is the public's perception if fair play in the games: you win they pay and the cards aren't marked. If the games are run crookedly or the casinos get a rep for not paying then the public will cease to show up, choosing Branson, or the umpteen Indian reservation casinos instead.

Vegas is one of if not the, fastest growing communities in the country because of gaming and the tax structure, lose the suckers who come from all over for a chance to win, and you've got a desert with high tax rates to make up for the loss of gaming income.

Seems tho, that for short term gain the casinos are pissing all over their customers. It's scary because a lot of people rely on fair play for their livelihood and they may be about to lose.

Other than that it's business as usual.

a fool and their money...

What does that mean, did you just open a fortune cookie or something? They're talking about throwing people out and not paying their debts if people win too much. They're not talking about cheaters either. At least when the mob ran the place it was respectable.

I expect to hear about the card counters being kicked out without getting paid, but the guy who won $48 grand on a straight up sports bet is the one I have the most problem with. I mean, you can't really cheat at that.

At least you can trust a mafia casino to pay you when you win, as long as you pay them when you lose.

2005-08-20 12:47:34 PM
You mean casinos are greedy and slimy and evil?! When did THIS happen??

(Note for the humor-impaired: That was sarcasm.)

2005-08-20 12:48:27 PM
Which hand do you play cards with? Are you sure?

2005-08-20 12:49:40 PM
There's been an arms race in blackjack for some time. Players figure out new techniques, the casinos modify the rules to counteract those techniques, the players sue the casinos over the modifications, and so on.

The article mentions one of the casino technologies - they use cards marked in a way that devices in the table can read them, know what cards have been dealt, calculate when the remaining deck is favorable to the player, and automatically signal a reshuffle.

The CEOs need to be help personally responsible for all debts their casinos haven't paid yet or face jail time. Simple as that.

2005-08-20 12:55:37 PM
But that is the joy of gambling. You take a gamble on whether or not the casino pays up. Didn't you read the fine print? If you win the money, you then have to roll a 12 on a 10-sided die to be fully paid. Geez.

Nemo's Brother: The CEOs need to be help personally responsible for all debts their casinos haven't paid yet or face jail time. Simple as that.

I'm all in favor of punishing CEO's, but we need to punish the shareholders too. They are the ones making money off of this kind of cheating. Send the CEO's to jail and fine the corporation heavily to punish the shareholders.

I'll... crack your farkin' head wide-open in front of everybody in the bank. And just about the time that I'm comin' out of jail, hopefully, you'll be coming out of your coma. And guess what? I'll split your farkin' head open again. 'Cause I'm farkin' stupid. I don't give a fark about jail. That's my business. That's what I do

If anyone here is thinking about gambling this year, please reconsider. Send me the money to invest in my small business, and we'll split the profits.

Why gamble with cards/sports/a machine? Put your money in investments. It's less fun that way ;D

The appearance of this article is no doubt the result of money well spent at a media-relations firm by competitor in the newly-crowded legal casino business.

It's still sad to hear, though.

2005-08-20 01:15:51 PM
Card-counting is not illegal in Nevada, nor is it considered cheating. The Casinos frown upon it, but by law they have to pay-out any winnings, even if they suspect the winner of counting.

Blackjack is easily beatible with a small advantage for 6 or 8 decks (as long as it's not 6:5 BJ). In fact, in some ways (such as group play), it is beneficial to have a high number of decks, because the swings for which the player have an an advantage tend to last longer. The player can make big bets for longer periods of time and it looks less suspicious since they don't have to move from table to table as much.

Even 1% advantage can provide good dinero (on average).
1% x 100 (hands/hr) x $50 bets = $50/hr

You just gotta have the bankroll to take the fluctuations.

With that, you might as well memorize basic strategy for BJ and live with the -0.3% to -0.5% disadvantage, and get free drinks, or play poker (and get free drinks) while your in vegas if you wanna gamble and not lose too much money while having a good time instead of concentrating card counting.

/don't tell MGM or Monte Carlo I know this
//sorry for the math

Worse yet if a reporter from a news network reads this and decides there's a story here.

Well, you play with snakes, your going to get bit eventually. Gambling and cheating (by the house or the players) is as natural as ice being cold. While it can be entertaining it's a racket, always has been, always will be.
