The college is stupid, there are state/federal laws that cover military home of record.

2005-08-17 05:56:23 PM
I forsee some astute Congressperson or Senator getting involved in this.

2005-08-17 05:58:59 PM
we don't need him anymore, we have plenty.

Which will be resolved promptly when he returns... please.

Non-issue from the perpetually outraged.

Hey, it's all about personal responsibility. The state is not there to carry your ass.

milesdavishatesu nor is the state there to pound you in the ass, which it seems is happening to this marine...

Yes it is. The people of this country exist solely to server the needs of the state. The individual is nothing. The government is all!

p.s. You need to update your sarcasm filter.

This exact thing happened to me (minus the Iraq part). I was stationed in San Antonio, had a Texas DL, had been a Texas resident since high school, and UTSA tried to charge me the out of state rate because I was military.

A quick letter to the Express News fixed it.

As a veteran and a resident of the great state of texas I can tell you with full certainty that this exact situation has been thought of and given remedy:

I give you the "Waiver, Military: Honorably Discharged, Separated or Retired Veterans who Move to Texas"

http://www.collegefortexans.com/cfbin/tofa2.cfm?id=82

Program Purpose
To provide an immediate waiver of nonresident tuition to the veteran, spouse and dependent children who move to Texas upon separation from the military.

Please, by all means though continue your bashing. You dont really need an excuse; But if it makes you sleep better....

Now that this has been greenlit and will turn into a flame war, please read my post above. The state of Texas has an exemption in place that covers this guy. The only mistake made was that probably some idiot kid doing a workstudy had no idea there was an exemption.

Why does Texas hate America?

2005-08-17 09:13:10 PM

Well do you relaize that Austin voted for Kerry in '04. And the City is not called "Moscow on the Colorado" for nothing. ACC is rabidly leftist in it's policies and administration. Having said that Austin Community College does have a decent undergraduate program if you avoid the history courses(white man evil, US imperialism in Japan, etc.)

I would point out that most Texas Agency regulations have specific exceptions for those in the military who are based elsewhere.

2005-08-17 09:13:56 PM
He is still a Texan.

He will get the lower tuition once the mess is cleared up.

2005-08-17 09:14:43 PM
Maybe it was his suntan and they confused him for a Mexican??

2005-08-17 09:15:54 PM
There are laws in place to prevent this. Don't worry folks, this is one of those rare cases where a quick letter or call to your represenative will fix things.

A congressman would fall all over himself to fix this now public issue.

2005-08-17 09:17:55 PM
does this apply to the national guard too? .

seems the national guard should be protecting the homeland soil of the nation.. yet they get sent to iraq for at least a year to die for our sinfull voting in of george bush .

all hail geoge bush and his supreme rule of the planet of the united states.

2005-08-17 09:18:08 PM
Good ol' ACC. Like a real college, but without all the smart or motivated people.

/went for a semester
//then got tired of school

2005-08-17 09:18:42 PM
What a bunch of losers. The "representative" of the school couldn't even be bothered to explain herself, coming up with a BS excuse that answers nothing.

2005-08-17 09:18:56 PM
The key to eligibility for in-state tuitiion in Texas, as it relates to the military, is Home of Record. If you are the Army but serve in Ft. Drum NY but your military Home of Record is Houston, Texas, you are a Texas resident during that time. Often, for various reasons, soldiers but their Home of Record as the same city and state they are based in; conversely, some soldiers stationed at Ft. Hood, TX are chagrined to find out they are not eligible for in-state tuition as their Home of Record was some other state. Either way, it only takes one year to establish residency for purposes of tuition (I believe that year cannot be as a student).

Isn't not being a Texas resident a good thing?

Maybe GW could take a break from his vacation to talk to them.
/that would fix it
//or fix it so that nobody else could fix it

Wow, a university admissions department acting in a leftarderiffic manner. Who would have guessed?

You may witness progressives backing our troops in this thread

2005-08-17 09:24:45 PM
Do they have state taxes in Texas? That pretty much determines it where I live.

2005-08-17 09:25:19 PM
How dare those desk jockey libruls make life difficult for one of our glorious fighting men of war!

If it wasnt for that Marine, we would all be speaking swahili now!

2005-08-17 09:25:46 PM
alternative solution:

have your father go into the oil industry, become gov. of texas(you wouldnt have gone to iraq in the first place) then president of the united states.

2005-08-17 09:27:25 PM
Vulture is correct. Austin is to Texas, what Ashlee Simpson is to music.

2005-08-17 09:27:26 PM
I'm betting this gets fixed pronto.

It was probably just some minimum-wage school administrator following the rules to the letter, can't blame 'em for that.

OMG, A BUREAUCRATIC ERROR

2005-08-17 09:30:15 PM
It seems to me that Texas is turning more and more into a foreign country.

2005-08-17 09:32:12 PM
And then the Marine points the dumbass liberal admissions officers face to the "The Law" and it's over. Dumbass liberals trying to hassle the military service people.

/flamesuiton

2005-08-17 09:32:29 PM
As noted above, I guess there's a waiver for this, and there damn well better be.

The thing that gets me -- and I'm a progressive/liberal -- is how crappy a lot of our soldiers get treated when they come home. Hey, it wasn't their fault they got sent off to the wrong war. Personally, I think all returning vets should get free passes on all these little regulations and requirements.

"Is there a problem?" (Flashes discharge papers).
"Oh. Oh, no problem at all, sir, no sir!"

/support the troops -- oppose the war
//putting on asbestos suit

2005-08-17 09:33:46 PM
A-Typical texan. He just wants to change the rules to benefit himself.

2005-08-17 09:35:28 PM
I think everyone is missing what is really going on here. The school is taking advantage of him on a minor technicality because I'm sure he's going there under the GI bill, so it's the taxpayer that's paying the increased rate.

That's why the school could care less and they were hoping he wouldn't make a big deal about it and now they can't lose face.

2005-08-17 09:37:39 PM
This is just one of those "slipped thru the cracks" rules of THE STATE. It'll get fixed w/ a quickness. These boys & girls are going to get some righteous treatment when this is all over. I figure, considering they don't get paid shiat to do their jobs, we should give 'em some lee-way on getting things back in order. They did put their lives on the line. BS war or not. They've done more for the common good than any other group of "victims" currently getting assistance. Vets need post-war bennies. Gotta go w/ the Dems on that one.

//Sorry, Folks, went off on that one...

2005-08-17 09:37:49 PM
Good so see the most nearly perfect* state in the Union living up to it's potential.

*only two flaws: A. It's full of Texans B. Some of them escape to bother the humans on occasion.

2005-08-17 09:38:38 PM
good.

keep em all there.

more women for us here.

kinda simple.

2005-08-17 09:38:57 PM
This is exactly what happens when yopu let the liberals seize control of the government with their liberal activist judiciary. Texas is a disgustingly liberal state, so it's no surprise that liberals who hate our troops are abusing their power as the intellectual elite in acedemia to swindle our troops and direct the money to the liberal conspiracy to assassinate President Bush and appoint Ted Kennedy as Supreme Commander of the World. And all the liberals in the judiciary like that commie pinko Scalia will let them get away with this unless we go nuke every mosque in the country. That's the only way we can defend America against the WMD-toting, terrorist loving, liberal intellectual elite.

This sorta reminds me of the time I was coming home from Korea on leave...dressed in my US Army class A uniform...and the customs/immigration folks at SFO weren't going to let me in the USA because my bags were on a different flight, which was the airlines fault.

Luckily, all the noise of me and a bunch of other passengers giving the guy a hard time about not letting a United States soldier into the United States attracted the attention of an airlines representative, who finally convinced the customs guy the baggage thing was their fault and not mine.

I didn't get my bags (which had a bunch of Xmas presents for my family) until 1 day before my return flight (5 days after Xmas).
