Useless?

A HD is hardly a necessity, and niether is a wireless controller, headset or ethernet cable.

I'd be happy with my $299 vanilla Xbox 360, if I wasn't buying a PS3 instead.

2005-08-17 11:36:18 AM
I'm sure submitter's mommy will buy him the $400 flavor.

2005-08-17 11:36:38 AM
A lot of people over at the GameStop forums are complaining about how they don't have wireless controllers.

Seriously. What's the big deal?

2005-08-17 11:37:22 AM
The hard drive was the best thing about the Xbox. I'm sure they'll sell one separately for $150 though, so no big deal.

2005-08-17 11:38:18 AM
I was given my XBox for free. I only use it to watch DVDs.

2005-08-17 11:39:35 AM
i think plenty of people will buy the lower model.

I hate it when register links get greenlit.

And god forbid one would have to use *gasp* wires. I agree with everything MadAnimal said.

/especially the PS3 part
//waits anxiously for orders

ignom: I only use it to watch DVDs.

They make these things called "DVD players" for that now. You can get one that'll do a better job than the Xbox will for $30 these days.

Microsoft Sets Price for Xbox 360 Versions
Alex Pham
Microsoft Corp. said its next-generation Xbox 360 game console would cost $299 to $399 when the device is launched this holiday season.

The $299 version will come with a wired controller, but will not have the 20-gigabyte hard-disc drive, wireless controller, headset, Ethernet cable and wireless television remote control included in the $399 version.

Sony Corp., which said it would launch PlayStation 3 in the spring, has not released a price for its new console.

"This will put pressure on Sony come holiday of 2007 because by then Microsoft will cut their premium price to $299 or below, while the PS3 will still be north of $399," said P.J. McNealey, an analyst at American Technology Research. Meanwhile, Nintendo Co. cut $20 off the price of its Dual Screen hand-held console to $129.99.

Oh, will any HD be usable. Because I can cook up an IDE connection from one of no less than 50 HD's lying around doing nothing but organizing a hostile takover of the CD drives.

I figured the price for the regular would be at least $350, so I'm thrilled it'll only be $300. And wireless controllers mean nothing to me.

2005-08-17 11:43:01 AM
Damn, that's some expensive Madden.

I'll buy it anyway.

2005-08-17 11:44:15 AM
wireless controllers will just end up running out of battery mid game. Great!

I can't believe the reg link got greenlit either.

2005-08-17 11:46:49 AM
I know it's been a while and hard for everyone to remember, but this is the EXACT SAME price point as when this gen's Xbox came out. The system and controller was $299.00 but you couldn't find any. All the game retailers were into maximizing their pre-order bucks by forcing us to buy $399.00 bundles which only included the DVD remote and a game. So in my opinion, getting all of the wireless gear plus all of the high def gear and a hard drive for an extra $100 is going to be well worth it. Try pricing this stuff out individually. They've already said the HD alone is going to be $100.

2005-08-17 11:47:17 AM
I cant wait for the 360, I will have to go with the $399 version though, with 2 dogs I need wireless controllers.

2005-08-17 11:47:51 AM
My brother-in-law hacked my regular ol' XBox yesterday. Pretty cool. We copied all my game discs to the hard drive. I don't have to pop discs in anymore.

Reasons not to buy a PS3
1. Blu-Ray DVD (Java front-end and DRM, both can suck it)
2. Price ($450-550, yeah, whatever)
3. No HD (sorry folks, if you haven't modded your xbox, you don't realize how it makes the xbox a killer system, and how important the HD is.)

I could go on but I'll be flamed for these three already...

I'm saddened that so many of you don't know the joys of a wireless controller. If I buy an Xbox (and I won't be when it launches) then it will definitely be with wireless controllers.

Try pricing this stuff out individually. They've already said the HD alone is going to be $100.

To be fair, if they're charging $100 for a 20GB hard drive, they're ripping you off in a big way. Especially if it's just a regular old IDE drive. Even if you went out and spent $100 on a SATA drive, you'd still get between 100 and 200GB.

2005-08-17 12:01:35 PM
meh, i'll drop the $400 on the nicer X-Box just to play madden. And then I'll drop another $400 on the PS3 to play Gran Turismo 5 or whatever.

And then I will do a little dance that shows that I'm happy.

naskar258: funny how you all bash windows but will give Bill Gates a rimjob for the X-Box.

Not me. When all of you sell your xbox's to pawn shops, that's when I buy 'em. $100 xbox plus controllers.
Ah, pawn shops. One man's poor luck is another man's dream find. I love seeing how many wedding bands are there too.

I think the Xbox drives are laptop drives.

I think the Xbox drives are laptop drives.

The current ones are just standard IDE drives. The 360 might turn out to have laptop drives, but I have no idea about them yet. I still think $100 for a 20GB notebook drive would be a rip. Not even Apple charges those kinda prices.

While I agree with that in terms of PC parts, it's still a USB 2.0 external drive in enclosure (so bump your estimate up a bit) and it's pre-loaded with data they have yet to detail (but music & movie files have been mentioned). It ain't cheap, but nothing is in the console world. You'll paybe $20 for an 8 Meg memory unit for either the Xbox OR PS2. So console storage has never and will never be comparable to PC parts.

I think I'm going to be broke in November, and again next year when the PS3 comes out.

Ah, well I didn't know that part. That's actually a terrible idea. Just what I need, another piece of hardware hanging off the end my console to clutter up the space.

Well, it's not like it's going to be piled on top with a cable hanging off. It snaps on to the side of the Xbox.

It's the bic disposable version. It will only be valuable when the first hackchips come out and they revise it so you can't use the hackchips.

2005-08-17 12:39:37 PM
I'm sorry, but tell me again: Why the hell do people buy these locked-in, technologically inferior money-pits, when they can have a full-fledged PC system for the same price and never need to re-buy a game they've already bought (and still play all their old console favorites)?

2005-08-17 12:41:21 PM
In other news, Fark greenlights come in two flavors: regular or damn near useless (requiring registration).

"full-fledged PC system for the same price"

You're kidding me, right? If you plan on doing "light" stuff, sure, but not gaming to any serious degree.

Dell sells capable systems (it's a Dell, OK, but we're talking cheap here) for $299, then add a $150 (used) graphics card. et viola!

2005-08-17 12:50:35 PM
I'm sorry, but if you have to 'hack' a console to make it better, your a f'n moron for buying it in the first place. "Ooh, I'm gonna drop 400 bucks on this thing that sucks ass and spend all my free time making it good." yeah, thats real great logic right there.

/still gonna play ps2 for quite some time til ps3 comes out then i'll probably pick that up when the price goes down

The Xbox 360 controllers have rechargable batteries. They hook to the console via USB. The controllers can be recharged while you play.

I'll be getting the Xbox 360 with a HD. The thought of an Xbox without a HD is just silly.

*nix advocates are notorious for taking on challenges and conquering them. The idea of a distributed *nix server farm made of hacked xboxes, bought at below cost, (so M$ could get market share) makes me shudder in delight.

Thats cool and all, if people are up to the challenge for the sake of doing so, go for it. Like when that dude totally hacked his PSP to do all kinds of crazy shiat in his living room (needed a 10K piece of hardware to do it though) that's kinda cool. It just strikes me as odd when people say the xbox is better b/c you can tweak it however you want (also voiding the warranty so if you F it up your out a pretty penny).

So are you saying you'd actually buy the XBOX's not for XBOX's, rather for the parts inside to use as unix/linux servers? (i also think its hilarious that xbox uses its competitors software)

I'm sorry, Dave, but I can't let you watch that.

Wasn't the Xbox 360 supposed to be a fancy-shmancy Hi-Def DVR as well as a game system?

Methinks you'd need a lot more than 20GB for that.

If not this console, no doubt it will be in the next. Bill G. won't be happy until his company owns your living room and decides what you may watch, and how much you're gonna pay for it.

Then they will take all the info on your viewing habits and sell them to the highest bidder.

That's why they're gladly taking a loss of billions in the XBox division by selling these silly, unneeded toys at below cost.

The first tase is always "free."

Oooooooooooh, shiny! I MUST have one!

True, but you don't need the highest-end PC graphics card to achieve the results of the latest consoles. Because, as I'm sure you know, the gfx chip-sets in consoles are designed 1-2 years before the console is ready for release (I believe I read somewhere that XBox360's caps are about 1 gen behind current PC cards), by the time a console is out, that level of graphics on the PC is yesterday's news.
