The Chicken is the uber-mascott. Started as a one-off radio bit to get someone to wear a stupid chicken costume, but the performer was so over-the-top, he's built an entire career out of it.

Gave us folks from San Diego to be proud of during the fire-sale years when the Padres had near-zero talent and little else to cheer for...

I heard Youppi! is going to be joining the Canadiens.

The San Diego chicken is so big, he even has his own assistant. At a game several years ago I lauged my ass off at this sad-looking guy carrying a gym bag and following the chicken around. Can you imagine having that on your resume?

Screw all of them... its the San Antonio Puffy Taco and his buddy Ballapeno.

June 1979 brought a new beginning. The Chicken returned big time. It was a glorious and elaborate entrance in a 10 foot styrofoam egg, complete with Highway Patrol motorcade escort, atop an armored truck before a Padre game.

Upon being lowered onto the field by the players themselves, with the blaring music of the 2001 theme, The Chicken crashed out of the egg to a standing ovation of 47,000 people. "The Grand Hatching" not only symbolized a clean break with the past with Ted debuting his new outfit (the one he still wears to this day), but the event itself has been cited by baseball historians as one of the greatests public relations spectacles in the game's history.

Just like how Pete Rose is banned from the Baseball Hall of Fame, I'm calling for a lifetime Mascot Hall of Fame ban on Izzy the Olympic mascot. Not only is he a crappy mascot, but his video game was horrible.

Not even being The Cheat's costume in a Homestar Runner Halloween cartoon can raise Izzy's coolness points. No way.

The Stanford Tree is a great mascot. And the costume probably gets robbed yearly.

Teucer: But I must add...the Black Knight, an armor-clad sword wielding mascot for the US Military Academy's football team is pretty badass.

The mascot for Army football is a mule. I think he might be named Black Jack, but I have never figured it out for sure (Army had a live mule named Black Jack, but I'm not sure about the dude in costume).

THE PHILLIE PHANATIC WAS THE BEST OF ALL TIME, BUT HE WAS REPLACED BY SOMEONE ELSE AND HE BECAME KNOWN BY ANOTHER NAME...BUT THE CHICKEN WAS LIKE THE OLD "INK SPOTS" during the 40's...somehow they were seen in 2 different towns performing at the same time! I did not appreciate The Chicken when he started to interfer with the game, standing on the dugout or changing the score on the scoreboard while the game was in progress.One of my favorite signs that I made whenever he came to a Cubs game...PLUCK THE CHICKEN! I actually have a purple strand from his costume as a prize possession...I may put both up on Ebay.
