Usually when that happens to me in SimCity, I just bulldoze the buildings.

2005-08-15 03:10:02 PM
Quick1, that would be great, but the city can't afford a bulldozer, even at a dollar a lot.

How are those casinos working for you now, Kilpatrick? You farking moron.

Mayoral elections are coming, but the new mayor will be so swamped with crap that they might as well turn the city over to the state to run.

They built the modern day equivalent -- Ford Field and Comerica Park.

I have driven around Detroit a lot and it's a shame to see some of the older buildings with excellent architecture look like the aftermath of some 3rd world bombing raid.

I think the United States Gov't should sue Ford and GM.

This nation's economy is too closely intertwined with the automakers...when those two falter, the whole nation reels from it.

Ford and GM have done nothing but exhibit astounding incompetence, lack of foresight, and sheer idiocy for the past 25 years. For 10 years, they've lived on SUV and truck sales to keep them afloat. It was a lifeline. Rising gas prices will sever that lifeline...then Ford and GM...and America with it, will be farked.

The article said that racism is part of the problem, and I'm sure that's right. I'm wondering, however, whether white-flight must be inherently racist. Detroit is the most violent big city in the US. Is it inherently racist to move to the burbs to escape the crime?

2005-08-15 03:28:08 PM
Interesting to see that they plan to turn a lot of the land into farm land, talk about full circle.

Is it inherently racist to move to the burbs to escape the crime?

No, but it's inherently racist for the burbs to have for years put out the "scram" mat for blacks. Dearborne in the 70s was notorious for being a bastion of racism.

Many places in the Detroit burbs are still like this - a place where minorities are made to feel very unwelcome by the residents and authorities.

2005-08-15 03:30:42 PM
From the article:

"Suburbanites are taking the bodies of their relatives out of cemeteries because they're afraid to come to the city," Vogel said. "There are about 400 to 500 hundred (being moved) a year which shows you the depth of racism and fear."

Moving your family so you don't get shot or raped visiting them is racist, now?

2005-08-15 03:31:24 PM
Well to hear t he suburbanites talk about it, they are all from detroit. Every person I've met from around there is, (with their hat cocked to the side) 35 minutes out of detroit dawg. so that would be what? Ohio or Canada?

Might this have something to do with not wanting one's suburb to become what one left in the first place?

clearhead, I'm guessing even the rats and pigeons have left Detroit.

I was in Detroit last month and it's bizarre. We walked back to our hotel from Comerica Park and after leaving the immediate stadium area we didn't see another person until the front desk attendant at the hotel. Can you imagine walking 10 blocks in New York and not seeing another person or car or any sign of life. It looks like the beginning of "28 Days Later". At one point we had to drive through a poulated area, I much preferred driving through the ghost town sections. I'll take eerie over scary any day of the week.

2005-08-15 03:34:07 PM
But I bet if I wanted to give Detroit say $5000 for one of those abandoned homes I couldn't get it. They'd rather it sat there & rotted.

So, just because people have the means and desire to move to the 'burbs they're "racist"? I wonder if that includes black professionals and other middle-class types ...

They rob and rape the bodies in the cemeteries.

Step 2: Burninate the village in a controlled fasion
Step 3: Rebuild, farm, whatever

BassCadet, what are you proposing? Nationalizing the car companies? Yeah, that'll lead to quality products. Ever drive a Trabant?

If there is a better way to run a car company, then the field is wide open for someone to jump in. Sure it's expensive but consider the Hyundai story. They were mainly in the construction business when the head guy up and decided one day they should start a car company. The capital is out there if someone can make a decent argument for having a better plan for manufacturing cars.

Why don't we sue Harley-Davidson while we're at it. They let the US motorcycle business fall into ruin by sheer refusal to produce the products desired by most wouldbe motorcycle buyers. It was only a yuppie fashion fad that saved HD, not any acknowledgement they were ignoring the desires of all but a tiny portion of the market. They went so far as to lobby for tariffs on Japanese bikes in the 80's rather than acknowledge their own flaws. Government intervention fixed that right up, didn't it?

2005-08-15 03:38:52 PM
Most of the abandoned buildings and houses are owned buy none orther than Mike Illich. If we are blaming people, why not blame the white suburb-living coporate head that won't do anything with the 3/4ths of detroit that he owns.

I live in Houston, and my complex has gotten really ghetto in the past couple of months it seems.

Personally I don't care if you're purple with polka dots, as long as you act civilized and shut the Fark up after midnight.

Oh and I got to hear gunshots for the first time in 5 years at this complex.

Try walking in downtown Toledo OH on the weekends. Years ago the city basically shut down on weekends since the only things there were a few office buildings. They tried to re-vitalize it with a Baltimore-like Inner Harbor (failed) and a new baseball stadium (sorta worked). Old rust belt industrial cities are dying off if they don't have anything else to fall back on.

And now look at Dearborne, it's a thriving breeding-ground for the coming generation of homespun Islamic terrorism!

I work near an urban community garden/farm in Baltimore. Apparently, they're working on a bumper crop of weeds and discarded syringes.

So if Strizo23 is right, we should all be able to pitch in $20, buy about a square mile of property and build Farkistan USA IF Detroit and Michigan will agree that it's in the public good, and the only person who gets screwed is Mike Illich.

2005-08-15 03:43:21 PM
Blaming people for fearing genuine demonstrable levels of violent crime and calling them rascist is the worst form of denial. Don't deal with the real problem. Those people with the bizarre attachment to their lives and property are just bigots. Yep.

I'm pretty sure that if we started a national Pokemon league the situation would work itself out in a matter of months. It's a solid plan and I'm more than willing to put it into action if the government would just give me the grant I requested.

Detroits new city slogan

"Detroit, a good place to be from"

2005-08-15 03:45:50 PM
One solution Vogel has proposed is to turn swaths of the city into farmland. In the four years since his students initiated a pilot project dozens of community gardens and small farms have popped up.

Well at least the corpses of the murdered will provide some sort of fertilizer. Without a doubt there will be people in this thread trying to defend that crappy city, there always is whenever there is a story that points out what a shiat-hole detroit is. I'm always amazed that there are people who exist that are proud to call Detroit home. Go figure

I think Fark needs a "tragic" category.

Fark Contest: create a name for a company specializing in moving bodies from Detroit to cemeteries located elsewhere. [Note: bodies must already be buried in a legal cemetery.]

Of course I'm not proposing nationalizing the car companies.

I'm simply saying that that GM and Ford are displaying gross negligence in how they run their companies and that it is pulling America down with them. It's folly to sue them, but surely the US Gov't has a way to rap their knuckles and let them know that all subsidies will be cut if a new course isn't laid out.

There is no precedent for companies as big as GM/Ford failing and pulling down everything with them. There is a first for everything. All I'm saying is, something needs to be done about it.

If there is a better way to run a car company, then the field is wide open for someone to jump in. Sure it's expensive but consider the Hyundai story.
