"Clearly Nash was the first - the first to put an American sports car" on the market, said Bill Emerson, curator of the Healey Museum being built near Danville, Va., noting that the more famous Corvette and Thunderbird did not appear until several years later.

The Allard had them beat by a full year (both were British chassis with US engines)

I love how the horse is just looking at it like "n00b."

2005-08-13 07:47:49 AM
I like that one better than the one on the stamp. (crappy resolution - upper left stamp)

2005-08-13 03:56:53 PM
MGA is still my fave, but that allard is a neat looking vehicle...

2005-08-13 03:58:03 PM
Uh, note that I'm not calling the MGA an american sports car, just a general statement on the personal preference of styling in classic sports cars.

Before I get flamed....

Aberdeen, MD??!?!?

Wow, there's a suprise...

2005-08-13 03:59:02 PM
More people should learn that i'm too lazy to register. Thanks for the pics, those cars are sweeeet. Buuuut i kind of lean toward the old aston martins. But all these cars are damn fine.

2005-08-13 03:59:33 PM
Little do my neighbors suspect, that I've been hoarding all the Pluto Nash DVDs in existance.

2005-08-13 04:05:35 PM
Dear God that is the most beautiful car that I have never heard of. Serious. Like I said in the other car thread, knowledge of cars is my weakness. Beautiful.

2005-08-13 04:12:53 PM
Must have really annoying neighbors

2005-08-13 04:13:15 PM
80 cars?? Did'nt someone somewhere say something about a fool and his money?
/Sorry auto lovers.

hehe well Jay Leno does have over 100. Then again it's not all the same make of car. But each person needs a hobby and this man's hobby is obvious.

Only collection remotely similar I can think of is Scorpions guitarist Rudolf Schenker's collection of something like 75 Gibson Flying V guitars.

2005-08-13 04:19:40 PM
This just reminded me of my father. Last year he decided to buy a vintage MGB, like he had in college. In his credit, it is one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. It's now considered his third and favorite child.

"He recounted seeing a Nash Healey for the first time at age 3. The two-tone green convertible was displayed in the showroom of Harford Motors on Route 22 in Aberdeen. Growing up, he'd frequently visit the showroom to keep tabs on the car, and at age 20 he bought it for $800 from a friend, who had bought it from the dealership a week before."

-Uh, the car sat in the showroom for 17 years!?

cargrrl82: I agree about the hobby thing, but my God, the money spent must be massive.I guess someone else said "If you've got it, spend it."

waxon_waxoff

If you got the money, spend it, true enough. Plus you only live once. And who's to say what someone else does is silly? If they're happy, doesn't much matter if it's silly to everyone else. Nice to see someone who's got something fun to do, as opposed to those who biatch about stuff in order to get attention.

Nick Mason has a pretty stellar car collection.

I have friends like this guy, only replace "Nash-Healeys" with "1st-gen RX-7s," "FWD Volkswagens," or "Sentra SE-Rs." If you love a car, you must own an unnecessary number of them. And none of them should ever be running right.

My Dad had a Healey 3000 and a MGA, but moved on to ze Germans and then a number of Italians (Fix It Again Tony?), then back to the Americans.

Me? I can't afford my poison, so I own just the one.

2005-08-13 04:29:24 PM
Meh.. the Nash Healey doesn't really do anything for me.. but good for him.

Now, the Whatthehey.. thats exotic!

2005-08-13 04:29:45 PM
cargrrl82: Agreed.

2005-08-13 04:35:20 PM
Now if he could only collect up all the Nash Bridges in exisitance. That show was horrible and should never have to be seen by anyone ever again.

Well, the article does say most are just shells, and pretty roughed up ones at that. I understand your sentiment, though.

I own 2 Jeeps, and I'd like to own a few more; a few older ones. But I'm just a middle class working stiff, and I keep batting around the idea of selling the second one because I can barely afford to keep one running, especially in these Canadian winters. I only wish I could indulge in my passion like this guy was able to. Cargrrl82 has the right idea. :)

mental_pretzel: "This just reminded me of my father. Last year he decided to buy a vintage MGB..."

Last year your father lost his mind. The MGB is indeed beautiful; however it is an endless, futile mind and money pit to keep on the road, concluding mercifully, in the owners complete insanity and loss of bladder and bowel control. In the end your father will deny ever owning such a vehicle if only to be able to sleep at night.

Soon it will be time to look for a retirement home and cases of Depends. Good luck to you buddy; it will be hard to watch.

He will need this: http://www.victoriabritish.com/

Since my last name is Healy, is there any way I can just sue this guy and claim some sort of lineage possession right? I should get a lawyer, then call him and discuss this.

cooper: I guess I just do'nt get the car thing. I have one car and that's enough to haul my azz around. Maybe if I had the money, I would have to collect something someone thought was silly.

Man quietly acquires one third of all Nash Healeys in existence without his neighbors knowing about it

He was kind of quiet. Kept to himself a lot. Neighbors never suspected he'd do anything like this. My God. Eighty of them! Lined up side by side in the barn, like cars a parking lot. How could we have known??

cargrrl82,others:

Did Rudy Schenker sell most of his Flying V's on Ebay a few years back? I can recall seeing a few of his on there. I think it could have had something to with the ol' rocknroll lifestyle (crooked accountants, drugs, etc). They sold for a pretty penny, though, especially the two-tone black and white ones. The one that springs immeadiately to mind went for 26 thousand or something crazy like that.

/and to think, i don't even really like the Scorpions

Now Where are the ejector seats and the flame throwers and the retractable machine guns at...Oh, wait a minute, that was Austin Healy James Bond type vehicles.., Me Bad

2005-08-13 04:56:28 PM
i found an aluminum block vette with sidepipes, all original stock, in a field in moorestown nj next door to a property we were putting trees down for.

after the job (we were done early) i just went and knocked to see if anyone was there and to ask how much they would let it go for. they wanted 8 grand for it. it didn't run, but it did before it was "stored". wish i had the money for that sucker back then. saw the same model became a collector's item.

ah well.

waxon_waxoffWell, I also collect hockey cards, all the way from 1911 up to 1980... got about 2k of them.

I'm also Canadian, and I'm pretty sure it's required for us to do that though.

he was much smarter, since he was always trying to nail jeanie, unlike that idiot nash nelson.

Your Right CeeBee, I forgot, the austin healy was driven by Emma Peele in the Avengers...Damned British shows.

ceebee

The submarine Lotus was an Esprit.

outatime

Yeah he did do that, though not totally sure why. Dave Mustaine from Megadeth also sold a few of his guitars on ebay a year ago. Including a couple prototypes. One option for winning bidders? Go to Dave's house to pick up the guitar. That alone would make it worth it.

2005-08-13 05:20:29 PM
one of my personal favorites. but i don't know if this will work

2005-08-13 05:21:58 PM
well apparently it did not work....there should be a nice pic of a triumph tr3...in my opinion one of the toughest looking british sportscar of the 1950's

2005-08-13 05:24:08 PM
Beautiful and unappreciated..

Well, they do say that pets and their owners tend to resemble each other. This is just taken to the behavior level, only with your car.

Opel GT! First manual (and automobile at that) I ever drove at 14 years old. My uncle let me drive his on the way from Lake Havasu, Az. to Phoenix, and i've always had a special place in my heart for them. GREAT looking body. I think I recall that the stick used to retract the headlights was the size of an emergency brake handle - & the lights flipped up from the side instead of the front. Every one of my friends thought I was a vette. Neat cars.

cargrrl82-
First thing I thought of was Jay Leno also. Someone said a while back on the show he mentioned having over 400 cars. Don't know if he was being sarcastic or if he really lost count. I'd guess the latter. Not a huge fan of the 30's classics, but his collection of old Caddy's, Duesies, etc. is unreal.

2005-08-13 06:03:27 PM
Speaking of steel, whats with GM killing the american muscle car? The GTO looks like a sunfire with hoodscoops, the camaro looks like a doorstop, and The impala has been turned into the most boring car on earth. At least the corvettes still look cool, thank god for that.

/not to mention the charger is ugly also
