Are they saying Yao Ming was not naturally grown??

2005-08-11 05:41:35 PM
I think what they mean is that he doesn't have any disorder that would cause him to grow abnormally. He isn't the tallest person in the world - some guy is almost 9 feet tall because his thyroid is completely abnormal. As for Yao Ming, I don't think he's 7'9 - I think it's more like 7'6 or something.

2005-08-11 05:44:20 PM
Well, if he plays for the Giants, chances are his abnormal size is due to rampant HGH abuse. Probably got the stuff from Barry Bonds.

2005-08-11 05:44:26 PM
Jebus! He's a giant Vulcan who had his ears bobbed.

There was a 7' 9" basketball player from Korea who came to Ottawa, Canada to train for the NBA a few years ago.

I was assigned to take pictures of him for a newspaper, and, well, the guy was farking huge.
But he was totally out of shape and didn't know a basketball from a watermelon. They were making him run windsprints, and I honestly thought his heart was going to explode right then and there.

It was still fun to follow him around though, and even more fun to follow a few feet behind him, to hear all the "holy fark" comments that trailed him wherever he went.

2005-08-11 05:48:37 PM
So ... would anyone hit it? And if so, how? And would you ever regain your self-confidence to hit anything ever again?

/Guessing she's got a 2-foot-deep vagina and an opening you could park your car in.

Oh wait, it's a guy?

I guess I have to start reading this articles a little more closely.

/My point still stands, though. If he were a woman.

2005-08-11 10:01:03 PM
Kinda sad about the girls...

2005-08-11 11:25:57 PM
He's 54. Is this the first time someone noticed he was really tall, or is he still growing and just beat the previous record?

2005-08-11 11:27:48 PM
"Kinda sad about the girls..."

Now that he's famous maybe his luck will change. I'm not saying he can drop decades of shyness *just like that,* but at least he's getting out and meeting people now.

2005-08-11 11:30:49 PM
I can understand his thing about the stares, people in China stare like you wouldn't believe, they're totally unapologetic in their staring. Very weird.

2005-08-11 11:35:28 PM
Doesn't look like this guy had any trouble getting girls :)

2005-08-11 11:35:52 PM
What the hell does he herd? Elephants?

2005-08-11 11:36:36 PM
I went to highschool with a guy who was 7'1" in 9th grade. He was clumsy like you wouldn't believe.

He's the world's tallest person who isn't a giant...

/sigh

2005-08-11 11:50:54 PM
I feel sorry for the guy.

2005-08-11 11:56:19 PM
Actually once you get into norther China they get tall. Yao Ming's whole family is tall, but not really unusually so for the region they're from. China could easily field a team of all seven-footers. The notable thing about them is they don't have any of the problems usually associated with the extremely tall. In part because they are just naturally that tall, no glandular problems or such. What's notable about the man in TFA is that he's 54. Most of those who have been as tall or taller have had some glandular or genetic issues and so had various problems and died before 54.

/waits for Chinese to field women's hoops team all over 6'

2005-08-11 11:56:32 PM
I bet it's much less socially awkward to be that tall in America than in rural China. If I were that tall I'd at least have a sure-fire way to start a conversation with anyone.

Robert Wadlow, the man who never stopped growing. And was killed by an infection in his ankle. One of two famous people from Alton, Illinois. The other being Miles Davis.

2005-08-12 12:00:29 AM
The article says this dude is 54 years old. Note the cane.

Wadlow (8'11") died at the age of 22. The "Big Fish" guy (7 feet) was 32. He died on Tuesday, August 9th. Andre the Giant (7'4") died at age 47.

I think the tallest player in NBA history is either Murasan or Manute Bol (7'7").

Matt McGrory died? NOOOOOOO! He was the nicest, sweetest man! I met him at a HorrorCon (yeah, I know, I'm pathetic), and he was simply one of the most delightful human beings I'd ever met!

I'm pretty sad, too. I never met him or anything, just liked him in the movies.

Perhaps he should visit zombo.com?

2005-08-12 12:06:24 AM
No man

Bol is the tallest on most lists I've seen, though I've seen him and Murasan listed at 7'7". But NBA height listings aren't always accurate, witness Charles Barkley 6'6". Scary thing about Bol is his whole family is that tall, he's even said he has a brother, maybe it's two, whose taller than he is. And a sister that's 7'. Sad thing is, his family and his whole tribe, the Dinka, are in the Sudan and we all know how that place is.

I have a brother in law who is 7'3" and by virtue of his height alone was given a basketball scholarship. He can't play. Why do people think tall automatically equals good at basketball?? He's got all kinds of back and joint problems too. And a perminent concussion from hitting his head on door frames.

2005-08-12 12:09:37 AM
ching gao! He's like a foot taller than me.

What a difference a foot makes...

people have told me that since i don't play basketball, i'm a waste of talent.

a waste.

some people are asses. men and women, children and babes.

/you're a waste of stupid! or the opposite. whatever is more insulting.

How, pray tell? "Hi, I'm really tall!" *cue attention whore picture*. Pretty soon, like after day 1456, you get tired of everyone staring at you. And EVERYONE knows how badly you dance.

/it gets better after day 3429 though

MiddleAgedWoman: I have a brother in law who is 7'3" and by virtue of his height alone was given a basketball scholarship. He can't play. Why do people think tall automatically equals good at basketball?? He's got all kinds of back and joint problems too. And a perminent concussion from hitting his head on door frames.

It's because of his height. When you shoot a jump shot, the average person is actually aiming below the rim. A tall person can see the actual basket/rim as a bucket, and has greater accuracy. In addition, it's simply easier for a tall person to take those basketball shots, because he/she can't be blocked.

There are very few sports where height is not an advantage.

I know a guy who is 6'9" and pretty big as well. Not at all spindly and pencil-like. He has had fatty bumps removed from his forehead because he keeps banging his head into things.

No man: The "Big Fish" guy (7 feet) was 32. He died on Tuesday, August 9th.

His name is Matthew McGrory. He's 7'6" and he's not dead according to IMDB. A google for "Matthew McGrory dead" turns up no articles saying so. Where did you hear this?

Apparently Mr McGrory was making a biographical movie about Andre the Giant.
